Who will win the NCAA College Cup?

CollegeSoccer

The NCAA Men's College Cup Semifinals are set for Friday and four of the best and most talent-laden squads in the country will be squaring off.

Akron, Virginia, Wake Forest and North Carolina will take the field in Cary this weekend and soccer fans will have the chance to not only see the best college teams in the nation, but also many of the best pro prospects in the upcoming 2010 MLS Draft.

Akron's Teal Bunbury, Wake Forest's Ike Opara and Corben Bone, and Virginia's Tony Tchani are four of the most highly-rated pro prospects in the nation (and the top four prospects on the SBI Draft Big Board, which will debut this week) and all four will be on display on Friday (in matches that will air on ESPNU). No, none of the four underclassmen has declared for the draft yet, but all four are being courted heavily by MLS and this weekend's performances could go a long way in determining if any or all of them will be in next month's draft.

Here's our question for you. Who do you see winning the College Cup Final on Sunday?

Who did you pick? Unbeaten Akron? The red-hot Virginia Cavaliers? Star-studded Wake? The underdogs from UNC?

  1. so how exactly is UNC the “underdog”
been a top 10 team all year and seeded #5 in the tourney. Hard to call any of these teams an underdog…the 3 ACC teams were evenly matched and Akron has impressed. I think UNC wins for Bolowich’s 2nd title of the decade.

  2. Timmy…DUKA sucks plain and simple…one miscrossed goal in the World Cup and al of you seem to think he is going to do well. He is going to be just like Marosevic…no playing time and not going to last more then his contract..the kid is not good enough plane and simple.

  3. Be surprised if Teal Bunbury ends up in MLS. Even if he isn’t somewhat overrated for the pro game, which people who know a heck of a lot more about ncaa say is the case, his Dad has major euro contacts and the belief in Canada is he’ll go to Europe directly.

  4. I’m biased but I can’t see UVA beating wake for a third time this year. I do think the two best teams in the tournament are playing at 5 pm.

    Go Deacs!

  5. That keeper that I’m ragging on about has been sitting on a chaise lounge watching the matches all year. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe he only has 33 saves on the year…..about 1.5 touches per match. It will be a whole different story in the final four. He’s a good keeper, but he’s still a froshy…..and the ACC is gonna shoot, shoot, and shoot some more.

  6. Some Achilles heel, John. That frosh keeper you’re ragging on only put up 15 shutouts in 23 games (including all three in the NCAA tournament). Maybe if you ACC people would look outside your league, you’d realize the class of the country is in Ohio… but really, go ahead and keep disrespecting Akron with your ignorance… they’ll beat two ACC teams in ACC territory since the ACC won’t travel outside of their precious little comfort zone.

Oh, and Virginia? They won’t beat Wake Forest.

  7. I agree with John. I went to the final four four years ago in Cary and even though there were no North Carolina schools, it was still close to a sale outcrowd. Now there were 2 ACC schools in the tournament, so that might have helped. Here in Dallas, though the stadium was bigger it still seemed like a whole lot smaller crowd. Not sure what the actual numbers were.

I like neutral sites but they draw smaller crowds. so no problem leaving it where people are going to go and watch it.

  8. Wake Forest is the most talented of the remaining teams. Of course, they’ll probably lose to Virginia.

That said, I keep seeing Corben Bone’s name mentioned as a top prospect. But I come a way unimpressed every time I watch him play. What am I missing?

  9. uh, Wake beat UCLA in the quarters. Welcome the the ACC Tournament II (with special invited guest Akron) for the 2nd straight year. It’s not an East/West thing it’s an ACC/rest of the country thing. The ACC is simply the best, end of story.

  10. North Carolina wins it! Akron will finally recognize they are out of their league when they play an ACC team. Wake will choke again when it counts! Virginia’s luck is about to end and the last standing team will be North Carolina.

  11. What has happened to all the west coast teams? Is the East Coast just that much better in soccer talent or it that the top west coast players turn pro younger.

Let the debate start!!?? Or is that the West Coast teams are much better but end up eliminating themselves in the tournament. Hmmm

  12. UNC will bring the trophy to North Carolina … of course, since we’re hosting the tourney, it’s already here, isn’t it?

DC Josh: Wake Forest hasn’t been in Wake Forest, NC since the ’50’s … they’re now in Winston-Salem … about 1.5hrs. away from Cary.

  13. Hoos will win it all. No chance for Akron. The only reason they made the final 4 was because they didnt have an acc team in their bracket. Their luck will run out Friday

  14. Can’t they move the tournament to somewhere neutral? Cary, NC is around what, 15 miles from Wake and UNC?

How about Bradenton, FL, or another massive soccerplex.
