Adu reveals decision is between Hull and Aris (or so we thought)

Freddy Adu figured to be weighing transfer and loan options this winter, but he has apparently let the public know just which options he is considering the most seriously.

Adu revealed on Twitter on Sunday that he is choosing between English side Hull City and Greek club Aris FC (The tweet in question has since been removed). Reports surfaced on Sunday identifying Hull as a potential destination for Adu, who is currently the property of Benfica. Aris, which recently acquired American forward Eddie Johnson on loan from Fulham, was identified last week as a club interested in Adu.

(It looks as though Adu may have been having a bit of fun on Twitter with the Hull City stuff and may have been joking around about his Hull and Aris decision. So where is Adu really headed? The Aris reports have more weight than the News of the World report on Hull interest.)

What's the SBI take? Adu to Hull is probably the worst idea I've heard this week. Even if Hull were pondering a move to sell Geovanni, and even if Jimmy Bullard's injury absence goes longer than expected, would the club really leave its chances of avoiding relegation in the hands of an unproven midfielder who has yet to establish himself as a starter anywhere in Europe? Aris isn't exactly a club without attacking options either, but it seems like a better option than Hull for Adu.

Which destination do you think makes more sense for Adu? Think he's crazy for considering Hull? Hoping he joins Johnson at Aris?

  1. Mr. Freddy Adu should play for a team like York City (Blue Premier League, 5 fifth division team) or Bradford city (League 2 Team, a fourth division team). He needs to be realistic.

  2. seriously, this kid needs to stop twittering… he’s becoming a joke, and no i dont think its entirely his agent at fault, it appears to be him – he needs to drop all his side distractions and really work hard. Every twit that he removes later shows it shouldnt have been done in the first place! Focus Freddy FOCUS!

  3. Wow didn’t know Abreu failed at Aris? Abreu is a pretty good player but has played for 18 clubs since his San Lorenzo and La Coruna days! He must be a head case if he switches teams every 6 – 12 months. Surely teams don’t kick him out for his scoring record because he seems to be scoring goals everywhere he’s been.

    Take note Freddy!

  4. It’s very typical of them. He’s a paok fan. Whenever Aris is about to sign a player, they would post everywhere that he and aris suck and stuff like that. please ignore them.

  5. Hello from an Aris fan.
Our coach is Cuper , not really defensive, just wants every player to defend and play without the ball(sorry for my Eglish..)
If Adu wants to revive(or start) his career amd comes to Greece then he must work hard.Greek league might not be EPL , but we sure dont like players with no ambitions.
We just got rid of Abreu(failure, although he scored 5 goals) and next is Gracian(total failure from Boca J.).
I mostly see negative comments but if he works hard under Cupers coaching he could get his career back on track.
But if he fails again i think it would be the end of his career, he might be young but it doesnt really matter if you dont have ambitions and work hard for them.
And somebody tell him to get off twitter!
    XD

  6. Freddy’s best choise is to play for Aris Salonica because he would have the time and the chances to prove his talent.the world championship is near and Freddy could take part to Aris European’s maches in 2010-2011 either in champion’s league or UEFA cup

  7. Adu is only good for a higher/lower Scandinavian league, with the only problem being that they don’t play football at this time of the year. If he has to decide between Aris and Hull, I believe he should join Hull, only because I am an Aris fan and we had a lot of “promising” players the past 4 years, failing to live up their title. I prefer a good-trained, experienced left winger of 30+ years in age, than seeing Adu trying to learn this position and then leaving in 6 months or proving to be another ‘failure’ again. Greek football, although not as physical as EPL, is full of crappy defenders with their only talent being the use of muscles & bad tackling to eliminate any player having a little bit of skill to overtake them. I don’t see him shining in Greece either, the only good thing that might happen to him is being enlightened for a period by the coaching of a serious trainer like Cuper.

  8. maybe he heard someone say it, thought about it, agreed with it and believes that is the situation. doesnt make it invalid at all so dont try to propose it as being such. if you are going to say something smug you could at least follow it up with your take on the situation and/or elaborate as to why you “love” when people repeat what other people say. until then your statement is the invalid one.

  9. lmao thanks for the compliment. it must be impressive for you to see someone use so many words. maybe one day you will be able to construct a string of sentences that will make sense when read as a whole. it takes quite a bit more than following news updates on SBI and poking fun at a very ridiculous semi-celebrity to label someone a cyber stalker. now on a more serious note, isnt Nic D waiting to play tag with you in a closet somewhere? he also needs some sand removed from…well ill let him tell you all about that. have fun!

  12. Very interesting perspective on Cuper’s approach to soccer. I’ve read the same thing repeatedly. It may be true. I’ve seen a couple of games of Aris on the internet. They have excellent players up front, although not an effective left wing. Their defensive strategy appears to be holding on to the ball rather than giving the space to the opposition.

  15. The only problem I see with Adu playing at Aris is that Hector Cuper from what I remember from his years at Mallorca, Valencia, and Inter Milan is that he incorporates a very defensive style. So I’m not sure how Freddy would fit into that system, if Cuper is using the same tactics at Aris.

  16. I had no idea Freddy Adu could place soccer. How exactly do you place soccer? Is there a special tool that you use to place soccer, because I’ve never heard of it before. Don’t insult someone’s intelligence when you can’t even form a sentence.

  17. The problem with Freddy is that he is the type of player that has to have a squad built around him in order to succeed. The problem is that nobody is going to build a team around him. It really doesn’t matter where he goes. I have always said that he needs to drastically improve his work rate and until he does that, he will have a really hard time finding quality minutes on a team.

The best situation would be to come back to MLS, but of the options out there, Greece would be the best. One of the better leagues out there, not as physical as the EPL so he would be able to showcase his skill (if it still exists)

  18. According to the Greek website that first reported the move to Aris, Benfica have agreed to the transfer. Aris now has to cut/sell one of their non-EU players to make room for Freddy.

  19. Did you watch the gold cup? freddy is a good technical player and has the ability to open up a game but without a solid work rate that means nothing. I also strongly disagree with “I think many of these European coaches are prejudice and bigots.” I think you need to choose your words a bit better and think about what you are saying. There is definitely a bias but I wouldnt say they are “bigots” or “prejudice” for not playing an unproven player from a country with very few globally proven players within it’s history. soccer is a business and good business is to deal with what you know works while taking the odd risk here and there to get a heads up on competitors. signing freddy was a risk and apparently he isnt showing enough work or skill to get playing time. simple as that. there is nothing bigoted about it. he is a dime a dozen globally and in business, and football, if something isnt working get it out and try something else so that you can compete. if there was bigotry going on he would still be in america playing in mls.

  20. Stay away from Hull. You can tell that Phil Brown is an idiot when one of the team’s best players, Geovanni, sits on the bench while some crappy guy like Richard Garcia is playing. It’s because Brown cannot fit Geovanni into the way Hull plays most of the time. If that is the case for Geovanni, what makes you think Adu can fit in ? Also how will Adu even qualify for a work permit if he can’t manage regular time at Benfica, Monaco, and Belenenses ? Adu is not EU citizen, so he
cannot work freely within EU, unless he wants to get paid under the table ?

  22. are you serious? no one said the form of communication is unprofessional or invalid as a form in and of it self. the manner in which freddy is using it is unprofessional and i think that is what the “twitter nazis” are criticizing. twitter is a good tool to keep in touch with fans, much like facebook, but when a celebrity, freddy, starts being ultra diaristic, the tool becomes highly problematic. in freddy’s case it is making his career a joke in not only the public’s eyes but also the eyes of present and future employers. how is this good for his development or US soccer’s development? we are a country with limited talent and freddy happens to have a particular talent we are very limited on. he needs to watch his mouth, get people around him to make smart decisions for him and buckle down and do what it takes to push his game further: hard work. he isnt a star, he is a kid with talent (talent that is globally not unique) who thinks he is the prior. until he starts composing himself like a professional he is always going to be heavily criticized and mocked, justly so i might add. if you still dont get it then you may want to stick to “2 steppin'” because you are apparently to dense to deal with the fundamentals of interpreting the english language.

  23. Agree with Todd that there is too much negativity sent towards Adu and not enough objective analysis. I’ve said before the same about his technical ability and vision surpassing any other American player. His problem is a few glaring weaknesses – poor defensive effort, poor work rate off the ball, lack of confidence, lack of size. But to me, these are things that can be taught/corrected with the exception of size and maybe speed but that can be compensated for with experience. I think what he needs as much as a reality check and playing time, is a knowledgable coach who he will listen to and learn from. Again, he has many years ahead of him still.

comments like this give me an anti-american football fan bias, and im a yank myself…

wow, thanks todd. your two cents is probably worth even less to what the dollar holds up to the pound at the moment.
