European Transfer Ticker: Arsenal eye Campbell, Liverpool close in on Maxi and more

Campbell

by TRAVIS CLARK

Consider this the transfer week of retreads. Another ex-Arsenal player is linked with a return to England, as a move for out-of-contract defender Sol Campbell hasn't been ruled out by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

The 35-year-old was last under contract with Notts County, before leaving the club after playing just one game for the club. At the moment, the move seems like pure speculation, but given the fragile state of Arsenal's defensive depth, it would make some sense.

Campbell played for Arsenal from 2001 to 2006 before heading south to Portsmouth, and has been training at the club's location since leaving Notts County last fall. The credibility of the rumor is easy to contest, but if Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos moves on in January, the chances of a short term move for Campbell would increase.

Here are some other transfer stories for Friday:

Liverpool close in on Rodriguez

For U.S. supporters, Maxi Rodriguez is likely best known for knocking Mexico out of the 2006 World Cup. The winger is now in the sights of Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez, who wants to bring the Argentine to Anfield. A deal that would send the attacker up north is nearing completion, as Fernando Torres continues to struggle through a groin injury and Ryan Babel's future hangs in the balance.

Vieira inks City deal

The rumored Vieira-to-City deal is now confirmed. Vieira becomes the first of many likely signings of the Roberto Mancini era, signing on for six months with the club holding an option on next year. However, with the BBC already reporting Vieira is struggling with an injury issue, his Premier League return may be on hold for a few more days.

Chase is on for Moses

One of the most coveted young English players in the January window is Victor Moses. Starring for cash-strapped Crystal Palace, the 19-year-old has a number of big clubs admirers like Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham leading the chase for his signature. Financial problems and the need for new investment increase the chances of a move for Moses, even if he's indicated his happiness at Palace.

  1. When Landon arrived at Bayern, Klinsmann was in a death battle with Uli Hoeness, who wanted to send Klinsi back to Hollywood asap. Uli told the media, while Landon was still in ‘try-out’, that he wouldn’t sign anyone during the break.

  2. He will be on Sentanta Sports.

Can’t see Campbell going back to Arsenal. Wenger has generally been a man of never looking behind and Campbell is not the kind of centerback a top four team needs. He’s far too slow and takes too long to recover from game to game, to make the impact they would want.

He’d do far better for a relegation team. Hull is a good call.

  5. I checked out Everton’s website and the comments about Landon have been very positive. Nothing like the way the Germans were when he showed up at Bayern. I hope he does well.
