Freddy Adu waited two years between professional goals before snapping his drought last Sunday.
His next wait lasted just three days.
Adu scored his second goal in as many matches for Greek club Aris FC on Wednesday, netting the second goal in Aris' 3-0 Greek Cup quarterfinal second-leg victory against Skoda Xanthi. The win came after a 1-1 draw in the first leg last week.
Adu capped a strong 65 minutes of action by helping set up Aris' third goal with a beautiful long pass that ultimately led to a goal by Koke.
Adu started and played 65 minutes as a left winger for Aris, showing good pace and a willingness to contribute defensively that could bode well for his chances of earning a look by U.S. coach Bob Bradley when he names his squad for the United States' upcoming friendly vs. the Netherlands on March 3 in Amsterdam.
Eddie Johnson also played for Aris, coming on as a 76th-minute substitute.
Here is Adu's goal:
Aris will next face the winner of the Panionios-Kavala quarterfinal series (being played right now) in the semifinals of the Greek Cup. Panathanaikos faces PAS Giannina in the other semifinal series.
What do you think of Adu's latest performance? Starting to like his chances of making the U.S. World Cup team? Hoping he can get some minutes in the Netherlands friendly? Still not convinced he can make the team?

it would be PERFECT timing for him to finally get his groove on…he could truly rise to the occasion like so many who have come from no where to rock in the world cup in the past…great thought, good dream, go adu!
CONGRATULATIONS FREDDY!
KEEP IT UP SON AND WE MAY SEE YOU IN SOUTH AFRICA!

Bizzy, as other SBI regulars will attest, I rarely agree to anything. That being said, you are 100% correct.
I Agree Freddy Deserves A Spot On The Roster If He Get Regular Playing Time And Gets Sharp Because A Sharp Freddy Is Better Than Sacha, Robbie And Stuart Remember The Olymipics? Soccer Skill And Talent Dont Just Go Away They Kinda Go Into Hibernation When You Dont Use Them & Him Getting playing Time At Aris Will Revive That And We Definatly Need His FLAIR Style Of Play At The World Cup Because We Can Keep Settling For Kick and Run Players Like Sacha And One Move Robbie +++++ ADU is More Versitle Thats Very important to a Good Team Example Henry, Robinho, Ronaldo
No Adu..No Beasley…No Torres, mark my words England will dismantles us…big time. We are getting out class by teams like Honduras and denmark that are lower in the FIFA rankings because we insist on playing the same “blank” players. robbie rogers, holden(lets see him get play time in Bolton!!!), sasha put together can’t have the impact that Adu has on a game and everyone around him. We’ve only seen a tip of the iceberg from Adu, in a league far superior to MLS….
I can’t believe people still dogging ADU after scoring 2 goals in back to back games, and in a league that is superior league than MLS. Adu in training camp in Benefica or beleneses get more knowledge about the game than a full season in MLS!!! Robbie who….sasha where lets get real the way Adu dominated MLS and played in the U-20 world cup alone (with all the up and coming stars in italy, spain, brazil etc) should tell you all he has the Knowledge and skill, and just needs the chance. Him not going to the world is OUR LOSS more than his…..
i have been critical of freddy in the past, but I have to give credit where it is due. As far as establishing yourself goes, this is a good start. a playing adu certainly offers more for the usa than a playing klejstan, cunningham, rogers, etc. I am not ready to book his ticket just yet, but if he continues like this he will be a controversial omission.
lol, there’s a man who knows how to celebrate.
Sure, many moms will do ANYTHING for their kids, but to believe there was an incentive to falsify Freddy’s birth certificate is to believe that an 8-year-old can be identified as a soccer prodigy.
An 8-YEAR-OLD!
Come on, man.
mud pit…….so true. Does it ever stop raining in Greece?
i like your style Hush.
Hell yeah Freddie, that was balls out. Sweet goal
The more important question is, “What’s up with that crappy field?” No pools of standing water? No giant divots of sod? No stream running between the touch lines? That groundskeeper should be ashamed!
I suppose you’re one of those guys who think Obama is actually an American citizen, too??!! How gullible can you be, man?
HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA. The HUSH man said what??? Where are the rogers, sasha, cooper, finley, casey, etc.. bums who rant on how great these players are and rant about how ADU is so 10 years ago!!lol I told you guys that a 50% ADU was better than most of the MLS pool put together!!HAHA… AHHHHHH Me encanta el futbol! Papa,.. cuando you miro talento, YO LO MIRO PAPAAAAAAAA!!!
VIVE EL futbol,.. don’t argue with the Hush man when he knows there is talent in a player! 😉
put him in the corner and make him do this all day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucpFiEKkkCk
step two: add a defender for light pressure.
Step three: defender at full pressure.
I am top scorer in the Scotch League. Hah! I love Scotch! Scotch, scotch, scotch.
Hey guys! Hello from Thessaloniki. I am an Aris fan and i was one of the almost 16.000 attendants at the stadium. The truth is that Adu is a great player and we needed an AML desperately, that’s why Freddy has gained a place into the basics of the team immediately. He has good technique and skills but he is not so strong and doesnt play so good the defense. In modern football all players attack and all defend. He is usually tired after 55- 65 and that’s the reason Hector Cuper is substituting him. We are very satisfied with his performances but he has still a lot to learn.
Eddie is a good player and this is obvious. He will take minutes, probably 90 against AEK at the next game, because Campora will be absent due to yellow cards. He is kind of a different player and he is very useful for a certain type of play. Campora has scored many goals during the last 14 months for Aris (maybe around 18) so it is very difficult to gain his position but he is a first team player for sure.
Finally, i would like to inform u that the Greek League is not as underestimated as u think. In my opinion it is much better than Argentinian for example… i have seen many Argentinians with very good name in their country coming in Greek Superleague and showing absolutely nothing, such as Leandro Gracian or Roberto Bation for example who played for Aris without showing anything special. The level of football played is better than Scotch League maybe equal to Portuguese. If 100 is perfect and Spanish League is 98, England has 96, Italy has 90, Germany has 85, France has 83, then Portuguese and Greek League come together with 78. It is not that bad. Search for the players playing in Greece and then judge (Sisse, Smolarek, Galetti, Pablo Garcia, Contreras, Ronaldo Guiaro, Nasuti, Oruma, Etanje, Gilberto Silva etc). I have watched your league and believe me it is not at the same level with Greek League. You have better organization and stadiums but the level of football is better in Greece. Thats my personal opinion! So long guys
I’m pretty sure he was trying to make fun of the freddy adu haters.
“why EJ would go to Aris…”
Money. The guy’s got to eat. And, better playing prospects at a fairly decent club.
No.
Like MLS? Really?
Am i the only one who didn’t see Freddy touch the ball? Looked like he missed the ball and it bounced in the goal. No?
I’m not upset with his playing time. I was asking why EJ would go to Aris if Toumba’s scenario above about his prospects for future playing time is so bleak.
Not sure why you think I’m jumping on guys…and I freely admit I know little about the Aris roster.
A really great left foot.
I like Adu’s form lately. Soccer sometimes is all about momentum. Think about it, until last year, who had really heard of Charlie Davies, then he started making waves. Freddie is starting to make waves. If he keeps scoring and setting up goals, you can bet he will quickly find his way back on Bradley’s radar. Our midfield is not tremendously deep, nor is our front line. An in-form Freddie Adu could greatly help that situation, especially now with Jermaine Jones slipping out of consideration and Benny Feilhaber out 4 weeks.
Lol, or Ching diving to knock in Another US players ball that was already going in for a goal, like Ching vs Cuba back in October 2008….LOL.
Adu> Ching,Casey.
lol. Also I actually like this goal a lot. Freddy ahs his eyes on the ball the whole time. From the pass to the finish never took the eye of the ball and slotted it home cooley.
Yea Freddy’s Mom worked two jobs to support her kids, when they first moved here. does this sound like a women who would lie about her son to gain an advantage for him?
And you must have some terrible memory. Adu was an MLS Cup winner we he was what 15 or 16?. Putting up similar stats to the players above when he was much younger in MLS. When also the other players have it easier because they are bigger, and yet Freddy did the same at 16 while the others were around 23 and also (for Adu) while being smaller in a very physical league.
Adu> Kjelstan,Findley,Rogers.
Mo edu is starting for Rangers while Holden didnt make the 18 for the game today.
Freddy was never at Xerez. You are mixing him and Altidore on that.
This is one of the reasons I was never quite able to understand why Benfica gave up on him so soon. The fact is he did play well and produce when they gave him the chance.
Remember the olympics or the youth world cup in Canada where Freddy was a very good player… Probably the best player on the pitch. He played a very advanced role. He gets beat up in the midfield. USA needs a fast, crafty, quality finisher… excuse me for saying so, but he is head and shoulders above Robbie Findley or Jeff Cunningham as the speedy, creative, crafty replacement for ChuckD.
Anyone agree
Really, the kid is 20 and this is his “last chance?” Apparently you think we would need to “change the system” for him to have any effect. Why? Watch the USA Spain friendly a while back. Without him we would have been camped out in our own half the entire game. Oh and Torres coming around?? It’s not him coming around it’s us. He is just as good as Feilhaber at both offense and defense, but is a better distributor of the ball. You obviously haven’t watched any of his league games. He can play defense and doesn’t lose the ball often. Without someone like a Torres or an Adu or a Feilhaber at center-mid you are camped in your half with Bradley and Clark.
We are not talking about other national teams. We only get to select from what we have! And the US has very few talented ball handlers.
Before the Confederations cup Davies was also considered a “future” player by Bradley. Until his hand was forced to play him, due to injuries, and poor form from other players. If it would have been up to Bradley, Ching would have been a starter at the Confederations Cup.
Adu could be a good player to have come off the bench.
I think Isaac was talking about Charlie’s time in Sweden…you know where he was playing when he broke in with the Nats.
Quite sure he was referring to the Swedish league…
I’m talking about Hammarby and Sweden
Thank you Andy.
Interesting that you say that on the heels of John Terry completely missing two balls that lead to Everton goals last week.. oh the Irony… you EPL and La Liga snobs need to chill out and enjoy the fact that an American player who is young is getting minutes in a league that is better than our own domestic league and playing under a manager that is very well respected in the world…
I agree!
Isaac, you are right, that is no joke!
Really guys? You are upset about the fact that EJ has played like 120 minutes in 3 matches when he did not log more than 120 minutes for Fulham the entire first half of the season… Eddie has done fine, he is their super sub when the game opens up and allows him space to run into. Some of you people are so quick to jump on to guys when you know nothing about the situation… Eddie is in a very good place and the more cup games the better for both Freddy and Eddie. Aris FC loves these two, be happy about that.
nevermind I figured it out.
is it just me or is that not Freddie who scored on that clip?
You can debate the league merits but the players in the greek league are superior technically.
Without a doubt.
if Freddy is not on the national team this summer, it definitely will diminish his negotiating power. its about visibility.
Let’s not forget how well Freddy and Jozy play together. They caused fits for defenders in Canada and could do so again in SA. Bottom line, Adu creates goal scoring opportunities. If we are down a goal, I want him in.
