Evening Ticker: Beasley’s car torched, Sampson reveals USA ’98 secret and more

DaMarcus Beasley 1 (AP)

DaMarcus Beasley's car was set on fire outside his Glasgow home on Monday. Beasley was not harmed. Police are calling the incident a deliberate act.

This isn't the first time Beasley has had his car hit by vandals in Glasgow. In December of 2008, Beasley had his car broken into.

Here are some other stories from Tuesday:

SAMPSON REVEALS USA 98 SECRET

If England captain John Terry's act of cheating with the significant other of a teammate sounds familiar, it does to members of the 1998 U.S. World Cup team. According to 1998 U.S. head coach Steve Sampson, former U.S. national team captain John Harkes had an affair with teammate Eric Wynalda's wife, an act that led to Sampson leaving Harkes off the 1998 World Cup team.

Wynalda spoke candidly about the incident, choosing to speak publicly after being asked about the John Terry situation.

"There's a lot of similarities between what happened to us in '98 and what's happening now to England," Wynalda told the Associated Press. "It's an unfortunate time for England, because I know how that can affect a team firsthand. Obviously, we all know how we did in the World Cup in '98."

ANOTHER CLUB AMERICA PLAYER SHOT

Club America midfielder Juan Carlos Silva was shot in the buttocks during an attempted carjacking in Mexico City on Monday, just eight days after teammate Salvador Cabanas was shot in the head.

Silva was not seriously hurt in the incident, but was grazed by a bullet. He is expected to return to training next week.

What do you think of these stories? Worried for Beasley's safety? Have a better understanding of the U.S. national team's debacle in 1998? Glad Landon Donovan didn't go to Club America?

  1. Sampson lost his mind during the World Cup, its true. But before that he led a dammed entertaining team. Too bad that prick Harkes couldn’t keep it in his pants for just a little while longer.

  2. Why is getting your head chopped off worse than getting shot to death, getting run over, getting burned to death or getting blown up.

    You’re still dead.

You just think you are better than the Mexicans

  3. I hate John Harkes and Eric Wynalda anyways so this just brightens up my day. As far as John Terry, I could care less what he does in his personal life as long as he’s legit

  4. To add on to what loudiamondphillips said, the shootings aren’t exclusive to soccer. Look what happened to the Connecticut football player who was shot last fall, or any number of shooting NFL players are involved in each year outside bars and clubs. With good things like money and fame come the bad.
These sort of incidents happen all over the world, all the time. It just so happens that the sport of soccer has had some newsworthy incidents lately.

  5. I was mad at Sampson because of the poor performance that year and I thought taking John Harkes out so close to the cup was not helpful. But I admire the man because with all the criticism that he took for not selecting harkesthat he never brought this up until now. It is my understanding that someon else brought it up recently and Sampson confirmed it.

  7. Maybe it’s closer to living in Iraq than you think. I could be off on my numbers but one report I saw about a town on the border was averaging 11 murders PER DAY.

  8. How do we know it’s “racist”? It could be (a) partisan (Celtic supporters), (b) anti-American (some pimply wanna-be Internet terrorist), (c) pointless (drunk idiot sociopath looking to make mayhem,) (d) personal (some d-bag thought Beasley was looking at his girlfriend the wrong way.) Or, it could be racially motivated. Who knows?

  9. Couldn’t agree with you more…seems like there were a lot of us who knew but out of respect for Waldo didn’t say anything. Every time Harkes was shown respect it was like getting sucker punched…glad to see him held responsible.

  10. I for one am glad that the truth about Harkes is finally out. Can we please quit lambasting Sampson for the performance of this team. They were ripped apart by this situation. Harkes put his selfish desires before the dreams of an entire nation.

I for one find it difficult to forgive him when he has never taken responsibility for his choices.

  11. Have to agree on Wynalda on FFF. It is unwatchable now. As for the rumor, I always thought it was just a rumor because Wynalda had never said anything about it before and he seemed to me like too much of a loud mouth not to have said something before now. I see that Harkes denied it in an AP interview and Wynalda only called it an inappropriate relationship. Is this a Bill Clinton depends on what you definition of “is” is tyoe of thing? Did Harkes not have sexual relations with that woman?

  12. Mexico is dangerous because of a war we’re fighting on behalf of the U.S.: The War On Drugs! It is an American War, but the U.S. will NEVER fight any war on its soil.
Who knows what behind what happened to Cabanas! He’s not Mother Teresa you know? People should be praising the great Mexican Neurosurgeon and staff who so far has saved his life. Do you know how many crimes like this occur in Brazil on a regular basis. It’s the flavor of the day to bash Mexico, so get in line, follow the crowd and have your fun while you can.

  13. i think if i were DMB, i’d lease/rent a car only when i needed it.

beas has been on the bench or off it for so long, he’s really been a fringe player until recently. i would argue if this attack isn’t racist, and just a bunch of celtic hooligans out for a weekly car fire, then why attack beasley? why not go after boyd, mccullogh, miller or any of the more regular 1st team players who help beat celtic on a regular basis??
