It’s Q&A Time (February Edition)

It is that time again. Time for you to submit your soccer (and pop culture) questions and time for me to select the best, most interesting and least convoluted questions to be answered in installments during the rest of this month.

Have some U.S. national team questions? Have a TV show/movie/music question? Curious about something MLS related? Submit your questions in the comments section below and I will look to start answering the best of the bunch as soon as possible (I will actually try to post the first installment of answers later today).

Please remember to try to keep the questions a reasonable length. Essay-type questions will probably be ignored. Also, please don't submit a bunch of questions. Generally, we answer one plus a follow-up per reader. Ask a bunch of questions and chances are none will be answered. Also, DO NOT email me questions. I will not answer emailed questions. (ALSO, the comments section for this post is for questions only, try to keep random comments to a MINIMUM).

Lastly, I would recommend checking out the Q&A archive. If you aren't a regular SBI reader, there is a chance your question has been asked and answered in a previous Q&A.

Now, send your questions our way.

  1. If Friedel starts for Aston Villa ahead of Brad Guzan, then why is he not in consideration for a spot on the WC lineup? I understand that he is getting up there in age, but the WC is only a few months away.

  2. Ives,

Any chance LD can extend his stay at Goodison Park until the end of EPL season if Everton offers small sum of compensation plus a loan offer of star youth player from their reserve team to compensate for LD’s loss to Galaxy? (Any other creative ideas welcomed :D)

  3. I was thinking.. the Bundesliga has the rule that every team needs to have 11 players under contract who are eligible to play for Germany.. might it be a disadvantage for Daniel Williams if he decides early (before he is really established) that he wants to play for the USA because he wouldn’t be eligible for Germany anymore?

  4. Any impressions on the likelihood of the Revs building a new soccer-specific stadium? There was word about a possible site in Somerville but I haven’t heard any new info in a while. This would be FANTASTIC for the Revs; Gillette Stadium is a disaster to get to from the city and I’m guessing turns off a lot of potential soccer fans.

  5. Why does DMB come up as a left back prospect for the nats should we be in a pinch at that position? He is best on the wing, and his performance at the Confederations Cup at LB was horrible.

  6. That is a flawed question. And while youth soccer may be extremely white for the most part, that is because you (John V.)are from the burbs and don’t live in a city. Soccer is enourmously popular with many immagrants, including people that you would probably classify as African-American, ie Haitans and other West Indians. There are also a lot of African immagrants from the west coast of Africa that dominate many leagues. I played in Philly’s public schools, and there was a high school that was awesome and consisted of mainly Africans.

  7. If Kobe Bryant would have stayed in Italy instead of moving back to the United States, how good would he have gotten at soccer and what position would he have played?

  8. I’m sure it’s been asked before, but… what is the potential effect of MLS strike on Donovan’s ability to stay longer than March at Everton. I think most of us want to see him continue to play well vs. top-class competition and potential WC opponents, and see this as better prep for WC than returning to his big-fish-in-small-pond situation in MLS. Thanks.

  9. What are some of the proteges that we should watch, over the next 8-10 years that could find their way onto the USMNT. Who is going to lead the USA at the 2018 world Cup?

  10. It seems that unless Bob Bradley lights it up at the World Cup he will likely lose his job. Not sure if this is the right choice, but if he does who would you like to see as the USMNT coach. I think that it might be time to try Steve Nicol as the coach.

  11. Ives,
The only thing I know about Luis Gil is that Arsenal tried to sign him. knowing Wenger’s talent for spotting talent, I naturally imagined he was going to be the American Pele. but seriously, I have to ask, is Luis Gil worth getting excited about?

  12. We should buy portsmouth!!! Ives you’re in charge of the team as GM. What is your plan for the team. Who do you bring in as players and coach. Do you make the club a training ground for USMNT players?

  13. Ives,

With a possible work stoppage in MLS would Landon Donovan be able to make a deal that would keep him with Everton until the the strike is over?

  14. If MLS does have a lockout this year do you see Donovan’s loan at Everton being extended? Would Holden’s move to Bolton (even if he does not play) be better than if he had stayed in MLS? What would USMNT MLSers do during the lockout?

  15. What is the deal with the kids that accompany the players from the tunnel to the pitch at the beginning of EPL games? They look too young to be, for instance, youths that played well that week in the club’s youth program.

  16. If there is a delay or work stoppage in the MLS, is there any way Landon finds a way to stay with Everton (assuming he wants to play, couldn’t the league and Galaxy make some money off this)?

  17. ives, quick question but one i should have thought of sooner: with the potential for the mls season to be put on hold or even cancelled, is it more likely donovan stays in england through a loan extension? where would u put his chances?

  18. Hey Ives,

Great site. Keep up the good work!

Over the past year I have been hearing a lot about head injuries in gridiron football. Several studies and research reports are stirring alarming discussions concerning the safety of football players of all ages and skill levels. I have to think at least some concerned mothers will dissuade their children from playing gridiron football. Do you see this resulting in more young Americans turning to soccer? Could this dictate a shift in the American sporting landscape some years down the road?

Baseball, Boxing, and Horse Racing were the top three US sports not too long ago!

  20. It’s all about the scholarships, the inner-city populations see b-ball and football as a way to pay for college. There aren’t many soccer scholarships out there. A lot of African American players are playing because their parents were foreign or because their families are middle class…

  24. Ives; do you ever see the Revolution franchise really developing a strong fan base in its current situation? Would the Krafts ever be willing to sell the team to someone who wants to move them into downtown Boston in a new stadium or an upgraded one (i.e. Nickerson Field)? Do the Krafts really make that much $ off of the Revs?
