Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

 Brad Friedel (ISIphotos.com)

Brad Guzan normally handles Aston Villa's cup competition duties, but fellow American Brad Friedel gets the nod today in FA Cup action against Crystal Palace.

Friedel is the starter for Villa today vs. Crystal Palace in the fifth round of the FA Cup. The Fifth Round of the FA Cup could also offer an opportunity for another American, midfielder Stuart Holden, who could make his first-team debut for Bolton when the Wanderers take on Tottenham (or not).

The quality soccer action will also take us to Italy, where Napoli-Inter and Juventus-Genoa, as well as Argentina, where Estudiantes-Independiente will be South America's top tilt.

If you will be watching today's action, please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

  1. Hey guys…..for those of you who haven’t heard yet, ADU scored his first goal today for Aris before half time to put his side up 2-1! If him and eddie can continue to get minutes and impress then they should be going to south africa in my opinion!

  3. I don’t know about the World Cup but for the Dutch friendly I think that both Adu and Johnson should start because of the injuries and lack of playing time of others.

    Johnson with Altidore

Donovan on the right, Adu on the left.

  4. King is, based on his columns and tv appearances, a humble and cool guy. He’s a wonderful writer and I for one am looking forward to him reporting from SA. I imagine Grant will be writing more of the stories for hard core footie fans, while PK will be writing for many of the casual soccer fans. I think it’s a great move by SI.

  5. Thanks for the clip.

What I would like to see is Freddy run toward the winger who fed him the ball to say thanks and good work getting it into the middle for an easy tap in.

Why is it that goal scorers dont do this more often???

  6. I was thinking about it last night….. and as of right now only two spots are being discussed by bob bradley… he needs to know who his 4th cb, 2nd lb, and 3rd and 4th strikers are gonna be…..

Goodson has the 4th CB spot for now

no one has the 2nd lb spot

3rd striker spot is between casey and ching

4th striker spot is freddy’s if keeps playing

  7. Aris down to 10 men

Adu and Johnson both out for defensive purposes.

Aris also have a cup game Wednesday might be saving them for that one.

  8. I know it, and if he recaptures his good play from earlier this year and avoids further injury, then that’d be freaking spectacularly helpful.

But he’s just so frail. Did his parents not give him enough milk or something?

  9. wow i dont think that if freddy had been starting with jozy at the confed cup we would have beat spain…at this rate he should be on the roster but dont even joke about him being a starter yet. the wc is 4 months away nobody knows how the roster is going to shake out ESPECIALLY with the possibily of more injuries, and players not being able to recover from injuries and regain good form. the roster is up in the air i think DBEAS and FREDDY will both be on it though.

  10. Its not just the fact that he has one goal in greece….. he has all the tools required to dominate he just needs time on the field which he is getting and he needs to produce which he is doing…. a goal and a beautiful assist in 3 games played… two of which were starts…. he needs to keep up this production but yah he should start… Davies is coming back from a serious set of injuries… dempsey as well…. Freddy if he keeps starting should start at the world cup… and if you think Jozy and Charlie’s connection on the field was great just go watch the under-20s for how well Jozy and Freddy link up

  12. I’m not completely clear on how it would work. Would they get included in the PL’s group of teams at the start of a season, and then be liable to get relegated if they finished at the bottom, just like every other team? I’m not sure how long they could last…
