The newest phase for U.S. Supporters began today at 10am ET. Tickets to the England-USA match, the semifinals and finals are sold out. A few other matches, including Italy and Paraguay in Cape Town on June 11 and Brazil and Portugal in Durban are reportedly sold out.

According to FIFA, 400,000 seats still remain for the World Cup, with 53 of the 64 matches available.

  2. I am an american living in Joburg now. Transportation is a huge issue here. The thing is people dont just take Cabs here. The drivers are unsafe. you need to rent a car or make friends that will take you and drop you off.

  3. I said it during Confed’s Cup that the idea of a WC here was stupid. They had to let a lot of the locals in for free to half fill any of the stadiums and I can see this happening all over again. Germany was a great, fun and safe experience. PS- I just started saving for WC 2018 in England.

  4. If your talking about the World Cup, I’ve got 3 Holland-Denmark tickets I’m looking to off load at face value. If you’re interested and you’re on Bigsoccer PM me there.

  5. Another more extreme measure you could take is couch surfing. (http://www.couchsurfing.org/) My friend who is going with a separate group is looking into this.
The basic idea is that you crash at someone’s house. You may have to host someone at your place first though(the site will have the details). I hear it’s pretty reliable but given the nature of South Africa I could see how you might have reservations.

  6. I actually booked mine through Hostelworld. I am staying at the Ashanti Lodge for most of my stay and will be at another hostel for a night or 2 on long street. At the time I booked them the rates were fixed. I got dorm rooms since they are the cheapest and will also be the most fun experience from what I can imagine. (I’m 26)
Some hostels didn’t have set prices and you had to personally email them about rates, I thought this was sketchy. Others did have special increased rates for the world cup, (I think about triple the normal rates)
Last I had checked, which was back in November, rooms were becoming very limited and it was difficult to get them for more than a couple days in a row, especially on weekends.

  7. If there is anyone on this board with England USA tickets (or TST tickets) they feel stuck with, please let me know. I’m not a ticket broker, I’m just looking to buy ticket for myself and two buddies who missed out on the draw. You can email me at braden-dot-lang-at-gmail

  8. I’m a bit worried about the transportation situation. We will be staying in Pretoria and only have games in Joburg/Rustenburg/Pretoria, but I don’t know a ton about public transit and stuff and hope we don’t get screwed pricewise with cabs.

  9. Probably staying in Pretoria (dorm) less than $100 per night. flights is about $2100 from NYC at the moment

There is a safari camp near rustenburg which are going for $110 per night for USA fans with some meals and beer included. they are also offering transport to and from matches but that might be and additional cost so I’m looking into that as well

  10. Wasn’t there some British clubs fans that did hire a boat earlier this past year to go to a qualifying round game in the Faroe Islands for one of the UEFA tournaments?

  11. Out of curiosity, where are you staying / how did you book your hostel?

I did something similar to you as far as game tickets and flight (and in Cape Town too), but thus far, when I’ve tried to book hostels (whether directly or through sites like HostelWorld), I was quoted either much higher prices than $25 or was told that they hadn’t set prices yet….

  12. It’s pretty amazing how this world cup is going for fans. I went to Germany with a group of friends. We didn’t ‘win’ our follow the US tickets until the very last lottery about 45 days before the WC. We booked our flights/hotels/rental cars and paid 1/3rd of what I see people paying in South Africa. I do plan on going to Brazil though. Hopefully that’s a better experience for traveling fans.

  13. Its not just US fans that are having problmes, im hearing all fans like Germany, etc. A lot of countries dont have all their people going because this absurd price hike. Which means more seats available to Vuvuzela’s, which means its going to be like a bee farm rather than a soccer atmosphere.

  14. flights from Chicago are $3500+ and have been for the past 2 months… this is before even looking at domestic flights and hotels and the cost of tickets (up from Germany in terms of price from what I could tell)…

as a traveler you should be compensated for taking a greaqter risk traveling to a place like South Africa, not made to pay through the nose….hmmm let’s see, pay $3000-4000 for a week per person to go to a WC in Europe and travel freely, walk around at night, etc… or pay $6000-$7000 and go to the murder and carjacking capital of the world….

something does not add up…. I hope to see lots of empty seats on TV… unless of course price come down by 40%- I’m not counting on that

  15. I had to sacrifice Team Specific tickets for many of the reason above. I just went ahead with one location (Cape Town) and booked everything well before the draw. I won’t get to see the U.S. play (had a one in 3 chance of getting the U.S./England game) but decided being in South Africa was the priority. You may not have luck at this point but hostels should still be relatively cheap, you will prob have to bounce around a lot. I got my hostel for 25/night.

For future reference (Brazil 2014) you should book hostels online as soon as you can all over the country, and then figure out your situation and cancel unneeded rooms accordingly. They only make you pay a 10% deposit to secure a room as long as you cancel more than 2 weeks in advance.

  16. I second that Ben, but i’d also like to include the idea of taking a party boat from NYC to South Africa. We should leave in a month. We may not make it there alive(alcohol poisoning, dehydration, starvation, crazy f’in sharks, and possibly pirates) but it would be one tall tale. I’ve got a paddle boat and a 43 foot yacht I can steal from my dad. I prefer the paddle boat. You down?lol

  17. Haha, glad to hear I am not the only one who got tickets but can’t afford the OUTRAGEOUS prices. The day before I found out I got tickets flights from NYC to Joburg were $1600 roundtrip…the next day they jumped up to $2200. Can we sell the tickets on ebay or something so its not a total waste? All SBI Mafia should just rent a house and live in complete squalor for 2 weeks so we can save money on housing and spend it on beer!

  19. That is why the World Cup should go back to the European continent. In ’06, German authorities couldn’t jack rates up too high, because people would’ve just flown into Amsterdam or Paris or Brussels or Copenhagen and taken the Eurail.

Hotel rates are one thing, and seeing as how S. Africa has fewer per capita — those places are at a premium. Germany and most of Europe is travel-friendly and already had the accomodations that were then competing hardcore for patrons.

    S. Africa is acting as a monopoly, and the airlines are all colluding because there’s a lack of options.

No thanks S. Africa. You just made me more interested in samba that quickly.

  20. I just have a hard time imagining them not doing something. This is a pretty big coming-out party on the world stage for South Africa. If no one can afford to show up, that doesn’t look good for them.

  21. It’s definitely price gouging. The part is the SA government somewhat acknowledges that some may be taking advantage and will look into it. I highly doubt anything is done this year..

  22. What I would suggest (/what I’m doing) is buying London – Jo’burg tickets, then waiting til summer deals from US to London become available and jumping on those. I got my London-Jo’Burg flight for under $1600.

My brother’s gf is from SAfrica and flies there all the time and hadn’t thought of that plan before i mentioned it to her, and now she’s going to be do the same as well.

  23. Have you guys looked into B&Bs in Joburg? They still upped the prices like crazy, but it was far more reasonable than $649 a night. Also, I don’t know how much help this will be now (we booked our flights in November) but we went through a travel agent who gets blocks of seats at wholesale prices and that saved us some major $$$.

That said, they need to do something about the price inflation. Having that many tickets still available is not a good thing for FIFA or the organizers in South Africa.

  24. unfortunately brazil 2014 probly wont be much better…that $700 flight to rio from chicago will turn into $1600 for june 2014, hotel prices will go up 3 fold, etc. then youve got england 2018 (youre crazy if you dont think its going there) and then your battle becomes the dollar vs the pound…might as well hold out till usa 2022!

  25. I’m in that category. I have my tickets already, but travel prices have gone up so much that I dont’ think I’ll be able to go now. What is normally a $1,000 flight from New York to Cape Town now cost $2,500. A 3-star hotel room that normally cost $60 a night is now $649 a night. I expected a bump in travel costs, but this is outrageous.
