Algerians/Slovenians Abroad: Weekend Rewind

If U.S. national team fans were unconcerned about the firepower that Slovenia and Algeria possess, they likely changed their tunes after the goals scored this weekend.

There was a combined four goals netted and Algerian midfielder Abdelkader Ghezzal accounted for two of them in Siena's shocking comeback draw against Juventus. The Italian heavyweights took a 3-0 lead just ten minutes into the game, but last-place Siena rallied and was able to pull out a draw, with Ghezzal's brace providing the final two goals in the 3-3 draw.

Algerian defender Nadir Belhadj also found the back of the net, scoring his third goal of the season in Portsmouth's 4-1 loss to Liverpool. The left back gave Portsmouth a consolation goal as he cooly finished from close range. The finish gave Belhadj a goal in each of Pompey's games against Liverpool this season.

Slovenia had a player net this weekend, too. Just four days after hitting the game-winner in a 1-0 affair against Sheffield Wednesday, midfielder Robert Koren scored West Bromwich Albion's second goal in its 3-2 victory over Blackpool by unleashing a powerful left-footed shot that soared into the top left corner. The win leaves West Bromwich Albion with a good chance of gaining automatic promotion into the Premier League, as the club currently sits in second place in the Championship.

  1. I definitely think we are better than both of these teams hands down. Algeria has some quality, but neither of these teams are expected to but us. If they win, THEY will the ones who have caused an upset, not us.

  2. the one thing that makes me not worried about any of these is Charlie Davies back training today! hell ya!

now lets get the rest of the team on the field weather it be injuries, loan extensions or CBA’s its time to get some momentum.

  3. Franco, would you at some point post Algeria and Slovenia’s projected starting elevens along with where each guy plays his club ball?

  4. Agreed but careful, the trend here is to panic over these goals, so you’re libel to get labeled ignorant for voicing your opinion to the contrary LOL

  5. Right, Slovenia’s first or second best player would be our fourth best. All I’m saying is I’m not freaking out over a goal in the championship.

Any way I love how soccer fans throw the word ignorant around so much. For some reason this is the one sport where everyone who follows it in America thinks they are the only that knows anything.

  6. those goals by ghezzal are less than impressive, week in and week out these algerians and slovenians abroad in general either dont play at all or dont impress me that much.

  7. we definitely will be favored against slovenia…i was just responding to angela being so dismissive of him playing in the championship…just some of the typical ignorance you see from american fans sometimes

  8. I agree with you. That said, looking at WC rosters I struggle to find teams I would rather us play outside of Concacaf and Asia. We are basically in a dog fight to try to get out of one of the worst groups.

I think this is an appropriate time to once again thank Sunil for his outstanding work…

  9. robert koren would…at worst…be the fourth best player on our team (behind howard dempsey and donovan) and he is definitely better than any of our central midfielders

  10. respect is healthy, but let’s keep our perspective, the two Siena guy’s goals were a tap in and a penalty, the other was in the Championship. This is the World Cup, who do want to play?

Most of Algeria’s guys are DNP. If you made this list for any team in the WC, these two have less players playing in Europe than about 80% of the teams – which is worse for them because one is in Europe and the other so close. And it doesn’t compare with our list of Yanks Abroad – maybe four years ago but not now.

I’m not losing sleep over this.

  11. There’s no doubting their quality. No game will be easy in the group stage, but we will come out with at least 4 points. It’s still great to find out more about their players, if not for the World Cup games, but also for general soccer knowledge.

  12. sheesh. 3 goals by Algerians in top flight leagues. When’s the last time our internationals got 3 in a weekend?

Funny but when you look at the Euro ‘coverage’ of these two teams, that is, how many players seeing time on the field in big Euro leagues, it’s about the same as the US.

    Nice work again, Franco.
