Algerians/Slovenians Abroad: Weekend Rewind

By FRANCO PANIZO

Zlatko Dedic has plied his trade In Italy's second division for much of his career, but the Slovenian forward has enjoyed a fairly smooth transition into the Bundesliga, with his goal against Werder Bremen serving as the latest piece of evidence.

Dedic scored his fourth goal of the season with a clever chip that gave VfL Bochum a temporary 2-1 lead over Werder Bremen. Bochum would surrender two goals in the ensuing 18 minutes, but the relegation-battling club might be able to take confidence in knowing that it was leading over fifth-place Werder Bremen courtesy of Dedic's goal.

Algerian midfielder Mehdi Lacen didn't find the back of the net, but he did help Spanish club Racing Santander inch further away from the drop zone by starting and going the distance in the club's 3-1 road victory over Osasuna. Lacen and Racing Santander now sit seven points clear of relegation.

Nadir Belhadj and Portsmouth look all but set to be relegated in the Premiership, but the Algerian defender took part in Pompey's sixth league win of the season. Last-place Portsmouth trounced Hull City 3-2 in a thrilling battle of relegation-threatened clubs, and Belhadj started and played 90 minutes.

  1. Before injuries and once Season starts on Thursday…Holden, Dempsey, Donovan (will again once MLS starts UP), Feilharber, Bradley, and Torres from the Midfield. Defensively Bocanegra, Spector, Cherundolo, Howard, Hahnemann, Bornstein (once MLS Starts Up), DeMerit, Goodson.

but if you add in the players who do get minutes but don’t always get 90 you can Add Edu, Bedoya, Jozy & Beasley.

  2. Dempsey, Bradley, Howard, Hehnaman (sp?), Edu, Beasley, DeMerit, Cherundolo, Bocanegra, Eddie Johnson, Bedoya, Donnovan (when he was still at Everton), Spector, Goodson… just from the top of my mind. All these players are getting regular minutes as starters or subs at their respective clubs in Europe. You can also add Charlie Davies who started Sochaux games before the injury, Stuart Holden who was locking a starting spot at Bolton and our newest though not offical USMNT player Jermaine Jones who is a midfield stud when healthy. There’s a bunch more I probably missed who surely get decent minutes. Basically, there’s more Yanks than ever playing soccer over in Europe, and this trend is only likely to increase. Sorry to disappoint you….

  3. And how many of yours are? Bradley and Dempsey? Who else? How many Americans are typically getting consistent minutes week in-week out?

  4. Both teams scare me. If we think we’re going to walk over them then we might as well keep our bags packed once we land in South Africa.
