Algerians/Slovenians Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Slovenia saw more of its players get in on their club teams' action this weekend, but it was the Algerian players who enjoyed the majority of the success.

Two Algerians found the back of the net, and both goals were game-winners. Rafik Djebbour hit the lone tally, a splendid turn and volley, in AEK Athens' 1-0 victory over Ergotelis, and Hassan Yebda scored from the spot in Portsmouth's 2-1 victory vs. Burnley, the club's first win in its last nine matches.

The Algerians' positive outings weren't just limited to the offense, either. Centerback Madjid Bougherra helped Rangers pitch a shutout in a 1-0 victory against Celtic in the Old Firm derby. Bougherra will likely be filled with confidence when Algeria plays Serbia in a friendly on Wednesday, as the win put Rangers ten points clear of Celtic atop the league standings.

Slovenia wasn't as successful, as it had its fair share of disappointing performances in the final weekend before its friendly against Qatar. But perhaps no showing was worse than defensive midfielder Aleksander Radosavljevic's in Larissa's 2-0 defeat to Aris Salonika. Radosavljevic started but only lasted 15 minutes after being ejected from the game for receiving two yellow cards.

What do you think of these performances? Any player(s) you're particularly worried about? Starting to think Djebbour is someone the U.S. backline will have to be wary about? Impressed by Yebda and Bougherra's performances? Hoping Radosavljevic starts against the U.S. this summer?

  1. Ives, can you confirm Belhadj’s situation? I heard he received a three match ban for the Egypt game, which would make him ineligible for the group stages…

  2. Thanks for breaking this up between the two countries – much easier to digest now. Too bad it’s a bit unsettling. These are not going to be easy games.

  3. Frank and Gerrard are over rated are you serious. They help lead there teams far in the Champions league. They also contribute a lot to the England team. I don’t know what you are watching when you watch them, but they are very threatful players. I do agree that Rooney is the biggest threat. Also, last time we played England Gerrard scored on us, remember ?

  4. Djebbour is quality. His re-emergence is important for Algeria, given their lack of front-line options. Wonder how well his likely strike partner Ghezzal did in Siena’s win.

Algeria must be concerned by the DNPs for Ziani, Meghni, Yahya and Mansouri, who is their captain. Wonder why they are not playing.

  5. Ummm…we should “expect a draw” in England-Slovenia?? With Rooney, Gerrard. Lampard, etc. — I think “expecting’ a draw is ridiculous.

  6. From what I’ve seen/heard….

Slovenia is a bunker/counter attack team. Hard to score against but waits for the opponent to make a mistake in order to score. If England is disiplined then we should expect a draw.

Algeria is a freeflowing team. Attack minded, control the ball/midfield, but susceptible to defensive mistakes. Once they concede a goal they’ll throw evererything into trying to get level at the expense of defensive. If England is on…then Algeria has little chance of winning or drawing.

  7. I am still not used to reading about Weekend Update for Algeria/Slovenia. Just feels like an odd post even though I understand why Ives is posting them. LOL.
