Americans Abroad: A Look Ahead

Jozy Altidore 2 (Getty Images)

By FRANCO PANIZO

Jozy Altidore proved to be a handful for centerback Johnny Heitinga in the U.S. men's national team's friendly vs. the Netherlands, and Altidore will look to replicate that performance this weekend, when he'll likely face the Dutch defender again.

Round two of Altidore-Heitinga could take place when Hull City takes on Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday, and a positive outing from Altidore could mean a favorable result for the Tigers, who currently sit in the relegation zone with 24 points.

Heitinga won't be the only familiar face Altidore sees, as compatriots Tim Howard and Landon Donovan are expected to play for Everton. If all three Americans earn starts, it could be one of the more intriguing American battles in recent memory.

There could also be another encounter between Americans when Aalborg BK hosts FC Nordsjaelland in the first week of Danish League action since December. Marcus Tracy and Michael Parkhurst may square off if each gets a start, while former Chicago Fire attacker Chris Rolfe will be looking to make his Americans Abroad debut for Aalborg.

Here is a rundown of who Americans Abroad will be playing this weekend:

  2. I’m please with the success of american soccer players in the the English premier League.Look at the likes of Brad friedel,Tim Howard and a few more, they all have done exceptionally well with their respective teams.

  3. I want Tracy to be a shock selection for the WC, but I understand this is woefully unrealistic. He is a nice combo of pace and aerial ability, though. Might fit nicely in a 4-4-2….

  4. Quentin Westberg currently in action as I type with Troyes against my fav team Creteil. Huge match with regards to promotion to Ligue 2.

  5. I checked out the Braga web site; there’s an article on the 19 on the squad for tomorrow’s game, and “Gale” is listed. Apparently Agbossoumonde has been indoctrinated into the Brazilian/Portuguese one-named soccer player tradition. Either that or nobody can spell Agbossoumonde.

Funny translation: Braga’s coach is named Domingos Paciência. When you translate the page, their coach in named Sundays Patience. Somehow Domingos Paciência sounds better.

  6. When will Dempsey be back??!? I am getting anxious for him to return.

I would love to watch Altidore take on Timmy and Landon if I didn’t have better things to do. Playing in a tournament this weekend, but I’ll depend on SBI Nation to have plenty for me to read when I get back.

  7. I have Wowway, and their package is not good for Soccer viewing. They don’t offer FSC (or GolTV that I’m aware of). Plus, their internet service is blocked by ESPN-360, so I can’t access that either.

ATT Uverse offers packages with FSC and GolTV, so I may switch to it at some point. It is a bit more money, however.

  8. how about that in the next 7 days they will play a FA Cup Quarterfinal against Tottenham AND a knockout-round game against Juventus? That not enough for you?

  9. Someone from Portugal indicated on bigsoccer that Agbossoumonde was going to be included in the first team tomorrow. Likely on the bench, but his reserve team play has been good. He recently scored the winner in a reserve game.

  10. I have to be slightly heretical here and pull for Hull over Everton. Reason: Everton looks out of it for a European spot, and Hull needs the win badly to avoid relegation. If Jozy is going to stay with Hull, I want them to stay in the top flight.

  11. Tracy is healthy? Makes me wonder why Bradley brought over Findley. I would rather have gotten a look at Tracy. Findley hadn’t looked too good against ES. Maybe Tracy hadn’t impressed in camp before he got hurt.

  12. Does anyone else think it’s worth seeing if Castillo knows how to keep his hands off opposing players (and the ball) in the box?

  13. Good to see Cherundolo back off the injured list. That means even without Gooch, we don’t have to start Bornstein _or_ Pearce!

  14. He was a sub for their last game and didn’t really do much running Wednesday, with his loan expiring soon, Moyes will surely look to get as much from him as possible. Moyes will want to rest his players as he’ll need them for the final hurdle.

Donovan may be playing with an injury as I have never seen him act so sluggish in a game, tired or not, he has always run himself to the ground for the US.

  15. Any update on Dempsey? is he going to be back this month or April? He was in wonderful form before being injured, and I want a reason to watch fulham again.

  16. Direct tv is the best…you would Get Gol TV – Mainly La Liga and south American leagues but has several German bundesliga games on the weekend. (Very boring games cuz the commentator is the most mono toned person ever…he prob is related to ben stein.

Other then that you can get FSC Plus which is more epl games…i was hopeing fox would have bought the rights to the french games but it doesnt look like it =(….and of coarse FSC is in the sports pack.

15- Sports Pack Gol TV, FSC
    15- Fox Soccer Plua

    30 Bucks additional for these 3 channels…hope i helped

  17. jb,

If you don’t mind listening to games in Spanish, my recommendation is to go with a Spanish language package on your cable provider. At least on my provider (direct tv) its very cheap and the package includes Gol TV, Fox Sports Espanol and ESPN Deportes all of which carry most or all (and sometimes more) of the soccer content of their English language counterparts.

  18. EA…I believe Williams does get a decent amount of time at Freiburg though he was subbed out last week at halftime.

I’m curious about an update on the young’ns at Mainz and that Agbossoumonde kid at Braga. Anyone have info on their progress?

  19. truthfully fsc is the best one…i have Gol Tv and FSC Plus through direct tv but until these channels go HD…i wouldn’t spend a dime on it.

  20. General question: What is the best network provider to go with in order to watch our Americans play abroad. About to move and was thinking of getting setup with Directv. All I have now is FSC and espn thru local cable provider. Any thoughts?

  21. Ives- Any word on how Simek looked in prep for Wednesday’s friendly? I’m a little dissapointed he didn’t make the bench in the Dutch game. To be honest, I forgot about him until I read his name above.
