Beckham injures achilles tendon, will miss World Cup (UPDATED)

David Beckham 1 (Reuters)

David Beckham is set to miss the World Cup after tearing his achilles tendon in AC Milan's 1-0 win over Chievo Verona on Sunday.

Beckham picked up the injury in the waning moments of the match without coming into contact with anyone and limped off to the sidelines for treatment. Beckham is expected to miss up to nine months, ruling him out of this summer's World Cup and most, if not all, of the MLS season. (Update- Milan's physio expects Beckham to be sidelined five to eight months.)

What do you think of this development? Disappointed Beckham won't play in one final World Cup? Are you a concerned Galaxy fan?

  1. Sorry to hear of your injury.

I went thourgh this injury and recovery a few years back. My experience left me with the impression the range for recovery is dependent on the severity of the tear and how true you are to your PT afterwards.

Given the shape Beckham would be in to play at this level, and the attitude he has approaching the game, I would not be surprised to see his recovery be towards the shorter end of the range. Mine was, and I’m no Beckham by any stretch of the imagination.

  2. I disagree. If Beckham’s not going to be there, that’s just less pressure on Donovan to stay out of loyalty to MLS. The Galaxy can just be a normal team now instead of the super-team they were supposed to be.

That’s not really in keeping with the MLS philosophy anyway. Let’s build the league slowly and steadily, but let’s also have two world class players on one team because that’ll get people interested…

The Galaxy aren’t sustainable in their current form, and the sooner everyone realizes that the better it will be for the league.

  3. Galaxy should do one of two things…

One, put him on the DL for all 2010, and use his allocation on a one-year DP player to sell tickets and contribute to a playoff run — someone who is available to come out of retirement, and would play for just one season. Guys like Vieri, Figo, Nedved, Larsson, Costa, etc. could be candidates. Come to America for 8 months and make $2-million.

The other option is to find out which club David and 19 are going to purchase, and trade David to that team. He then could play his final season for the team he is going to own, sell a bunch of shirts for them, and then retire after 2011 into the ownership role.

In the interim, the Galaxy could move on their next DP, who will carry the team in the post-Beckham, post-Donovan years, and pick up some compensation (allocation $ or draft pick).

I really think the best thing for the Galaxy and MLS would be option 2.

  4. As a supporter of Man United, I respect and feel for Beckham he’s just had his last goal blow up in his face:( I loved Becks, but as an earthquakes fan I have a miniscule hint of not giving a Sh1t..

  5. I’m dissapointed with the news…Becham is a class guy and is good for MLS and football in general. I hope he can recover and get back on the pitch for LA, (even though I despise the Galaxy).

  6. Well, those who don’t think playing back to back MLS and Serie A seasons are tough for an aging player, along with throwing international matches in the mix, just are either young themselves and don’t get it, or are just being unrealistic. I played in college, and have played all of my life. At 38, I did a simple fake to the left and stepped back to the right, a move I’ve done thousands of times without incident, and tore my left ACL and meniscus. There was no contact involved with another player. It just popped. Beckham’s achilles tear is really no different. When you get older, you lose flexibility, and lose elasticity in your tendons and ligaments, and the likelihood and incidence of these injuries goes up. It’s that simple.

I’m about 3 months out from surgery, and it will be minimum another 3 months before I can play. The recovery time on his injury is 5-8 months, and at 34, I’d lean more towards 8 months if he wants to continue to play at the highest levels and not reinjure himself.

  7. His Finish Dr. came out and said he would be back training with a ball in 3 months, maybe 1-2 more before he’s back to full 100% — let’s call it a tie!!

  8. Beckham can now catch up on his reading. I suggest the he start with some Greek mythology, perhaps the legend of Icarus. I’m sure he’ll get a kick out of reading about Achilles too.

  9. Life is full of ironies. Beckham went to AC Milan because he thought this would help him earn a World Cup roster spot. Not that Beckham could have known (or that he couldn’t have suffered that same injury playing for another team), but that experience is actually preventing him from participating in the World Cup. If he just stayed with the Galaxy, he might have been playing in South Africa in June and July.

    Get well soon Becks!

  10. Well he had to sit out during the transfer windows, that’s a month after MLS 2009 2 months after MLS 2008 and nearly 2 months after Serie A 2009

  11. No, he didn’t deserve a shot at that spot. The game had passed him by but sentimentality and his fame got him a consideration when England would have been better suited going with any of the better players they had waiting.

One consolodation is that this will probably give England the 2018 World Cup as everyone is going to feel (righfully) sad for him.

  12. I call BS on your excuse. Auto-Complete would turn your start to write “Becks” into something like “Before,” it would NOT change the first letter of your word. However, the B and N are right next to each other on a keyboard.

It’s okay, it could happen to qnybody!

  13. Yeah, now England might play someone who actually diserves to be in that squad. I’d say the US’s chances to win against England just went down 10%.

  14. AC Milan is known for getting old people healthy again… right?

I don’t know what they’re doing, but I’m pretty sure it’s just the next big thing in the steroids/HGH chain. We’ll hear about it when it gets banned (about the time they and the MLB have discovered the next thing in that chain).

  15. There are insurance policies for these sorts of injuries. Given that this was the 2nd year LA loaned Beckham, is there a possibility that the Galaxy got AC Milan to purchase an insurance policy for this sort of serious injury?

  16. I’m a reader from England. I realise that Beckham hasn’t been the most popular man in America so I have been blown away by the vast majority of commenters here who have been so level headed and understanding towards Beckham. Great to see.

  17. I feel horrible for Beckham. He just wants to put cleats on and kick the ball around. He has the same passion for soccer he had as a child in the park.

Watching the game yesterday, he pivoted and looked like maybe he twisted his ankle or knee. I never would have thought he ruptured his achilles tendon. Does anyone with a medical degree know more about this injury and how he could have possibly torn it with the movement?

Terrible news for him. I wish him the best and hope he can be back on the field within 12 months.

  18. James,

So you and I can say ‘we told you so’ when Becks comes back : )

Seriously, I just don’t see a WC-caliber player for a top 3 or 4 team – and yeah Capello was going to bring him along for sure – going out because of this injury.

And yeah business reasons count too, for Brand Beckham.

  20. I’m pretty sure his first cap came after the ’98 World Cup, and he was an alternate for the ’06 World Cup. The only one he missed due to injury to my knowledge was ’02 World Cup

  21. In return AC Milan should pay LA Galaxy,$250 Million. haha.

Also, It apears Brunce Arena’s biggest attraction to lure the extra soccer mom’s and soccer girls to the MLS stadiums this year, is not looking good.

  22. Sucks for Beckham but he’s had a chance to shine in World Cups past (many times). I feel sorry for Chris Armas whom always recieved an injury right before the World Cup.

  23. That’ll be a good peptalk for Becks when you see him, but this is SBI you’re talking to. Don’t you think it’s kind of a shame that the one thing he had his heart set on and his last chance to get it just went up in smoke forever? All the Capello ass-kissing and MLS fan alienating he had to risk, and working straight through two offseasons? You’d be man-crying yourself to sleep for weeks.

  24. can anyone see becks delaying his return to the galaxy, when he should be in LA rehabbing after he forced two consecutive loans to Milan that effectively rule him out of half the MLS season, and go to SA as a guest of England to “inspire” the English to lift the World Cup title?

  25. Ives: your expert analysis please.

What does this mean to the galaxy. No doubt they have insurance, but what about cap room and/or the DP spot. Are those available now? If so how much time do they have to utilize the new $$$/spot?

I would guess that he’ll have the best docs in the world helping him so maybe there’s hope for him. All I know is that I will never be the same from my achilles rupture even in my weekend warrior activities.

  27. Poor S.O.B. This is possibly a career ender? If it takes 7 months rehab then he’ll miss the 2010 MLS season. When is the last year of his contract with the Galaxy?

  28. Tough break for Beckham and not to downplay that..

But this is bad for the MLS and US soccer as well. The MLS enjoyed his draw. And assuming theres a strike will need everything it has once play resumes.

It also seems to surely make a Donovan move that much less likely.

At 34.. I figure Beckham comes back for next MLS season as a swan song, then into an owner situation.

  29. The best England vs USA match is the one where all players are healthy. This has been said before. But it’s true, isn’t it? I would rather try to beat England with Becks, Johnson and Cole in the lineup than other players. Even if Becks didn’t start. The same goes for Gooch, Davies and the rest of the broke-ass US squad.

  30. As a BIG fan of U.S. and RSL soccer, I think this sucks! He is an incedible player. When either team beats a team he plays for ( LA or England) it’s something to brag about a little bit. WHICH IN MY OPINION, SHOWS JUST WHAT A TALENTED, AND INPORTANT FIGURE HE HAS BEEN TO SOCCER AROUND THE WORLD! I’m sorry to hear it! Sad day for sure!
