Carolina Challenge Cup Update

D.C. United got off to a winning start on Saturday in its opening match of the 2010 Carolina Challenge Cup, while Toronto FC endured a disappointing start.

D.C. defeated Real Salt Lake, 2-1, on the strength of two Jaime Moreno goals, while TFC tied the Charleston Battery, 0-0, in Saturday's doubleheader at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, South Carolina.

The tournament will resume on Wednesday, with D.C. United facing Toronto FC (7:15pm) before Real Salt Lake takes on Charleston (5:15pm). Live video streams for both matches will be available at Toronto FC TV.

Impressed with D.C. United's pre-season so far? Still unsure if Toronto FC will turn things around in 2010?

  1. As a Battery fan, I love this tourny here in my backyard. Its a great start to the season and a testiment to the quality of our Club by putting it on for the last seven years. I was impressed with our Backline considering we had only been in practice for three days. The offense is going to take some time to gel but you could see that the components are there.

Looking forward to a good match against RSL and the highlight of the tourny The Coffee Pot Cup on Saturday!

  2. At this point it seems like there is little chance of TFC being better. Getting rid of Guevara, Vitti, Robinson and Serioux, and bringing in….? Just doesn’t seem positive.

  3. It’s too early in the season to take anything away from these games. I don’t get worried or excited until the first month of the regular season is underway.

Remember, DC lost their first three games the year they won one of their Supporter’s Shields (2006?). So the way you start the season is not relevant on how you finish the season.

  4. well, it was shown on Behind The Badge, linked to from the team’s website, referenced on the team’s twitter feed, and included in an email to ticket holders. so not sure exactly what you mean?

  5. Except for the fact that the Dinosaur chipped the starting keeper.
Slough it off all ya want folks. Same old same old here at SBI. United hater central.
    Cheers!

  6. Toronto did these feeds at the CCC last year, and in case you weren’t paying attention to the Sounders before last year they were broadcasting their Open Cup matches via USLLive prior to joining MLS….:)

  7. They split the squad? Other than Pontius, name one possible starter that didn’t play in the game…among healthy players? Yeah, Simms, Namoff and Burch are out, and Szetela wasn’t ready to go, I guess. I”m not sure the last two would be starters, even if they were available, and Namoff may not play at all. Everybody else played. This was the team we’ve got this year (except Pontius).

  8. As I DC fan, I was very disappointed that the organization did not publicize that this match would be broadcast over the net. Lately, I’m forced to wonder if they have an clue what they’re doing, in any aspect of the organization.

That said, I’ve seen Najar play before, and he’s the real deal.

  9. It was a friendly. It was not the first win, in that sense. It wasn’t very impressive, considering the lineup Laguna trotted out.

  10. I sure hope TFC at least makes the playoffs this year. It’s good for the league if a team with that kind of fan-base and ownership does well. And I worry that at some point that much-discussed season ticket waiting list will start shrinking.

  11. DCU beat the first place Santos Laguna in Mexico, the first win for an MLS team on Mexican soil. This would be like USMNT beating Mexico in Azteca. Pretty impressive, particularly since Mexican league season is in full swing and DCU is still in preseason. I am surprised that SBI did not mention this win.

  12. Too early to tell anything from these initial results. Take DCU for example….

    1. They split their squad. About half of their top side didn’t play against RSL. Onalfo is giving guys games off b/c of 3 games in 8 days.

    2. And they’re still missing a couple of other players (like Simms, Burch and Namoff) who are considered starters and didn’t even make the trip due to injury.

    3. And they’re a huge chunk of change under the cap and a lot of open roster spots. So clearly DCU is a work in progress. What they look like now is not how they’ll look like in a month.

    4. RSL is still integrating their new CR signing (which is a major addition).

So in short, this match tells us very little about either side.

  13. Things look grim in TFC land, not at all impressed with the off-season moves (or lack there of).

Enough teams have improved to keep TFC out of the playoffs again.

  14. Couldn’t have said it better myself… I mean they score their two goals with almost all of their A team against RSL’s B team in the 2nd half! DC will not make the playoffs again.

  15. As an RSL fan I was ecstatic with how RSL played against DC. Tons of exciting play, and had more opportunities than 1 PK goal showed. The 2 DC goals came against scrubs, and to be honest….. I really hope DC doesn’t completely suck this year. Their 1st team looked weak (though it is still early)

  16. Most Impressive at Carolina Cup – so far –

Andy Najar, Juan Manuel Pena, Christian Castillo, Adam Cristman

    Least Impressive

Danny Allsopp, Kurt Morsink, Julius James.

    Still it is just pre-season

  17. As a DC fan I was impressed with is the play of Andy Najar in this match.

We’ll see what Wednesday brings if I haven’t finished off to many green beers that day, I may watch it.

  18. As a DC fan I have to say I am less than impressed and really struggling to find something exciting to cheer for this year. No news on a stadium effort, labor strike issues looming, less than impressive coaching hire. Last years two leading goal scorers are gone and replaced with injury-plagued under performer Cristman and an unknown aging Australian who played in Qatar last season. As far as I am concerned it looks like a battle between DC and Philly for the worst record in the conference.

  19. I’m impressed Toronto FC TV’s doing live video. (Hopefully other teams — Chicago Fire! — will be doing this for their US Open Cup matches this year.)

  20. Wish these were on TV – the feed is terrible but better than nothing!

Let’s go DC! Ssad we still have to rely on Jaime.. But what a legend!

  21. Gotta get back in time!

Which is to say, if DC faces TFC at 7:15, and it’s somehow “before” RSL-Charleston at 5:15, this whole daylight savings time has gotten even more complicated than I thought.

Also, the big match of this tournament is the final-round showdown between DC and Charleston for the coveted Coffee Pot Cup.
