Inclement weather postpones Red Bulls Arena opening

The soft opening of new Red Bulls Arena was postponed due to inclement weather, it was announced Saturday.

Heavy rain and high wind caused the postponement of the game between the New York Red Bulls U-18 Academy team and the U.S. under-17 men's national team. The match is expected to be rescheduled.

The Red Bulls are now scheduled to open their new stadium on March 20, when the club takes on Robinho and Santos FC in a friendly.

What do you think of today's game being postponed due to weather?

  1. Nope, definitely no NYRB email at 9:00AM. I’m not a season-ticket holder, so my tickets were the freebies that I had obtained from the front office that were emailed to me on the afternoon of the 12th. Oh well, call me an ongoing doubter on whether this team has a clue…

  2. I got an email from the front office at 9AM that morning informing me that the game was postponed. Not sure why you didn’t get one as well.

  3. sorry one more question, if RBNY found a way to email me the tickets, couldn’t they have also emailed me that the match was cancelled???

  4. since I had a 2:00pm train and since the RBNY website had the cancellation on the press release side and not under the news section, I went down and was one of those stuck forever at Newark Penn Station. But the gift shop was open and I bought my $30 scarf…lol

  5. Plus Amtrak and NJ Transit service was suspended during the afternoon due to flooded tracks, fallen trees blocking tracks and power outages, and the Hoboken station (a major NJ Trasit/PATH hub between NJ and NYC) was closed. Most people who would have taken public transportation to the game likely would have ended up stranded in Harrison or Newark. Some people who did take the trains that day ended up stuck for more than six hours.

Driving was no fun Saturday afternoon either with all the tree and downed power line dodging. Stover and the Red Bulls FO made the right call.

  6. Now what do you say? 70 mph winds, blown trees, etc.. and this was a very low level match on top of it plus read the story below on someone’s car while going over the Verrezano Bridge. This was a little more than just a little rain. This was a low level hurricane or at least a tropical storm equivalent. Just have some fun and we look forward to the big match next week and the week after.

  7. Anyone not in the NY Metro area….. there are tons of people with no power, downed trees….. a friend of mine was coming to visit me last night (they live in staten island) the wind was so crazy their car was blown into the next lane when they were crossing the verrazano bridge… their car almost got blown off the bridge

  8. Note to self…. don’t go to costco during a downpour. No bags, and apparently people weren’t swayed by the weather.

Can’t wait for the friendly at RBA

  9. Not only Robinho but most of their top players incl Neymar. This was on Ives, the red bulls site and many other places already

  10. One comment I heard once is that the club will make more money playing the opener than in another league game back home. Thus incentive to firld the best team you can.

  11. Sorry if this has been talked about already but it looks like Santos has a league game on Sunday March 21st? What kind of team will they be sending? Will Robinho really be included?

  12. All things considered (this just being a soft opening, entrance for free, kids playing – not paid pros, very cold, wet and windy) it’s the right decision to make. Would have liked to have gone regardless.

  13. i was pretty pissed at first but i guess it was the right call. the field would get torn to shreds on a day like today.
