The U.S. men's national team entered its friendly against the Netherlands having never defeated the Dutch in the three all-time meetings between the two teams.

You can now make that four meetings without a win.

Goals from Dirk Kuyt and Klass-Jan Huntelaar were enough to hand the Netherlands a 2-1 victory over the U.S. at Amsterdam ArenA on Wednesday in the teams' final match before their World Cup rosters are announced.

Kuyt scored the opener on a penalty kick in the 40th minute after Jonathan Bornstein conceded a penalty kick for pulling down Wesley Sneijder in the box. Kuyt made goalkeeper Tim Howard guess the wrong way as he hit his shot low and to the left.

The Dutch added a second in the 73rd when a Huntelaar shot deflected off Bornstein and rolled into the back of the net.

The U.S. made a game of it when substitute DaMarcus Beasley, who replaced an injured Stuart Holden in the first half, curled in a free kick that Carlos Bocanegra nodded home from close range in the 88th minute.

With little time remaining, the U.S. poured on waves of attack and nearly found the equalizer on numerous occasions.

A free kick just in front of the penalty area was awarded to the U.S. a minute after Bocanegra's twelfth career goal, but Beasley's shot was too weak, and Dutch goalkeeper Marten Stekelenburg made a simple save.

The U.S. had two other opportunities in the waning moments of the match, but an off-balance shot from substitute Clarence Goodson went over the bar, and a 20-yard Jozy Altidore strike was knocked away.

The U.S. will next play the Czech Republic in East Hartford, CT on May 25 and then takes on Turkey four days later in Philadelphia, PA before departing for South Africa.

  1. And who was the coach and how many field players do we have on this team that were on it then… Just saying we progressed and our coach should too. There are alternatives to a 4-4-2… He trotted out a 4-2-2-2 once or twice and we did well, we have good players that play in other formations, so we ought to make use of that knowledge.
