Fred's 65th-minute strike provided the Philadelphia Union with a 1-0 exhibition victory over Universidad de Guadalajara Tuesday afternoon.

The midfielder, acquired by Philadelphia in the trade that sent the top allocation spot to D.C. United, took a pass from JT Noone and buried a shot from the edge of the box.

The result came a couple of days after the Union's 2-2 draw with Chivas de Guadalajara.

The expansion team will leave Mexico on Friday and has two more friendlies scheduled in Tampa to round out the preseason.

D.C. UNITED HEADS TO MEXICO

As Philadelphia leaves Mexico, D.C. United will flee the East Coast and head there for continued training and a friendly with Primera Division club Santos Laguna.

The match will be played at the Estadio Nuevo Corona on March 10. The following day, United will depart for Charleston, S.C., to participate in the Carolina Challenge Cup with Real Salt Lake, Toronto FC and the Charleston Battery.

The team will be a bit shorthanded for both trips, as midfielder Clyde Simms and defender Marc Burch are both injured. Simms underwent meniscus surgery on his knee on Tuesday and will miss four weeks of action. Burch's situation is a bit more dire. He will undergo surgery to repair a fractured bone in his right foot and is expected to miss four months.

SAN JOSE BLANKS CAL

Ryan Johnson, Brad Ring and Quincy Amarikwa each scored in the Earthquakes' 3-0 win over the University of California on Monday.

Joe Cannon played all 90 minutes in goal to earn the clean sheet.

San Jose will depart for London on Thursday to resume its preseason. First-round draft pick Ike Opara will rejoin the team for the trip after finishing up midterms at Wake Forest.

The Earthquakes also officially introduced a new player to the club, as they signed Argentinian midfielder Javier Robles on Monday. Robles, most recently with Velez Sarsfield, is the second South American player to sign with the team this offseason (Eduardo, Brazil). He scored for the Earthquakes in a 3-2 friendly victory over the Fresno Fuego Saturday night.

RSL CUTS FOUR

MLS Cup-holders Real Salt Lake made four roster moves Tuesday, waiving Rachid El Khalifi and Abe Thompson and releasing rookies Kris Banghart and Justin Davis.

The team departs for Charleston, S.C., later this week in preparation for the Carolina Challenge Cup.

Think Fred will be rejuvenated in Philadelphia? How badly do you think D.C. United will miss Simms and Burch? Like the signing for San Jose?

  3. Clever.

Anyway, Phila appears to have done a pretty good job already assembling a solid backbone. You can’t read too much into these results, but hey, better than losses, right?

  4. I remember back in the season when Kenny Cooper was hot that Abe Thompson scored some really nice goals every now and then. A team like Philadelphia that could use some fire power and depth up top might want to look into him.
