Omar Cummings scored a second-half goal and Colorado's defense made the score stand up as the Rapids posted a 1-0 victory against Chivas USA at the Home Depot Center on Friday night.

After a scoreless first half, Cummings scored on a beautiful turn and shot from 17 yards out in the 55th minute. Chivas USA could not break through a Rapids defense that stymied creative midfielders Sacha Kljestan and Osael Romero.

Marvell Wynne earned he start in his debut for Colorado after being acquired in a trade from Toronto FC earlier in the week, and impressed playing in an unfamiliar central defender role.

Matt Pickens struggled with his handling of shots, but still managed the shutout.

2009 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Zach Thornton missed the match for Chivas USA due to a hip injury. Dan Kennedy earned the start in his place.

  1. Wynne did make some good passes from the back to start attacks and I also thought he was better on the ball than people gave him credit for.

  2. Finally! I was thinking that I was the only one having a hard time with the new website. Highlights? Shoot, I’d be happy just finding scores.

  3. After getting Wynne and using him in the central where it works. The Colorado defense looks solid in front of Pickens who did well with a broken hand. they just need chemistry between the midfielders and forwards and also need some guys back.

  4. Looking at Rapid midfielders, they have a strong squad to feed a dangerous attacking pair.
THis season really is making me take notice again of mid-table teams having really solid squads. The purpose of parity in the league benefits us when everyone equally seems to perpetually get better.
And the level of support players really does seem to be improving per team.

  5. After the Wynne trade I almost – ALMOST – possted my idea about using him at center defender where his speed could have impact and his lack of crossing ability would be minimized.

Gee, I would have looked like a genuis…

The idea has some interest. I think he did well last night.

  6. I certainly had a differing view on the play with Wynne – thought he ddi a nice job of using his size and speed to get betewen the offensive player and the ball, prior to the offensive guy getting a touch. Also didn’t appreciate him outstretching his hands at all, but, no replay for me. Not that I haven’t seen that called, but, there was a hip check let go that was much more obvious to me. Actually, I thought that Wynne was the best of the lot mentioned, not that I think he should be in South Africa playing!

  7. If Cummings can get a little more disciplined on his crosses he’ll be racking up the assists to Conor; he could’ve had two assists and two goals last night. Wynne looked pretty good for his first game with the team, in a brand new position. As he learns his role and his reads his physicality and speed could really help CO. Need Clark to stay healthy and for Ballouchy to display creativity. Agree with This Guy that CO could be a sleeper team. Now, excuse me, Vail just got 10″ of powder so it’s time to snowboard.

  8. We deserved the lost. Colorado came to Carson not lose and waited for their chance. Our 4-3-3 needs time to work, but our midget defense is not good at all.
We will hit rock bottom before we are a dangerous team, again.
You don’t win ball games by the amount of hits you get. You have to score runs.
Same here, ball possession is cool, but we have to put the ball in the net.

  9. They didn’t renew. Comex is a Mexican paint company with no name recognition in the USA. Glidden is the official “paint” sponsor of the MLS. Sooooo, Comex can’t advertise it’s American subsidiary “Frazee” on Chivas USA jerseys thus they didn’t renew. Also, Corona is the rumored new shirt sponsor for Chivas USA, but MLS honchos don’t a)want a beer sponsor on the front of the jersey and b) can’t figure out what to do since the MLS already has an “official beer of MLS” sponsor.
    RED TAPE.

  10. What’s the story with Comex not being on the Chivas USA jersey last night? Couldn’t find any story explaining it and the new kits being sold on line show Comex on the Home Jersey but not on the Away Jersey.

  11. Colorado may be a sleeper squad this year. Their starting XI is solid. 6 USMNT players at some point in the last year too.
Colin Clark, Conor Casey, Wynne, Drew Moor, Pickens and Mastroeni.
    They look alright IMO.

  12. Watched the first half and it was hard to get through. Referee decided he couldn’t blow his whistle for the first 30 minutes. Both teams passed the ball away almost every time. Shots were mostly horrible. Had to listen to the announcer tell me about MLS players that might go to the World Cup Wynne,Bornstein,Casey and he threw in Beckerman since he was involved in a trade with Colorado.

Wynne shoved a guy down in the box, but the announcers had a man crush on him because he is fast. Bornstein got caught out of position against Cummings half the time. Casey even looks slow in an MLS game.

  13. Kennedy was hung out to dry by his defense along with the inability for Chivas to finish. Omar’s goal was very nicely struck and curled right around Kennedy. That was the only bad part of Kennedy’s performance in my opinion. He deserves to be out there. Not sure if Zach would make that save.
