Red Bulls sign Juan Agudelo

The New York Red Bulls have signed forward Juan Agudelo to a homegrown Generation adidas contract.  Agudelo's New York-based agent, Ron Waxman, confirmed the deal to SBI on Thursday night.

A member of the U.S. Under-17 national team and product of the Red Bulls Youh Academy, Agudelo impressed during pre-season with the Red Bulls after a successful trial stint with Colombian club Millonarios. Details of the contract were not made available.

Agudelo joins a crowded stable of forwards for the Red Bulls that includes Juan Pablo Angel, Macoumba Kandji, John Wolyniec, Conor Chinn and recently-signed Ghanaian forward Ibrahim Salou. He has impressed with his skill on the ball and improved strength, and should get minutes despite being just 17.

As a Homegrown Player, Agudelo will not count toward the Red Bulls' 24-man roster.

  1. Had 4 goals in preseason, looked pretty dangerous. Good holding up, and in the box. Not elite at either, but good at both. I think he has a very solid future…

  2. Great move by MLS and NY! As we see these players develop, and DC’s recent signing as well, it will really have a huge impact on the MLS Draft moving forward. There was some chatter at the draft that the only Forward NY took was Connor Chinn as a late rounder, yet with Agudelo waiting in the wings, in theory, they could look elsewhere.

Again, this highlights the importance of having a developed Academy. If you can groom these players along and bring them into practice, you know what you have and can use that info at the draft. I’m curious as to how the rookie class of NY will be graded now?

  3. Ives,

I’m counting 27 players on the Red Bulls roster now and I believe the team is permitted 26 (24 + the 2 HG)so … who has been let go?

  5. MLS is def on the up and up…… Now if only Backe would start Agudelo at Left winger we would be so attacking minded and plus Miller can hold down the whole left Defensively by himself… I could see Agudelo playing a similar role to that of Zakuani

  6. I have no doubt he’s a legend. Quite the amazing feat to take the pitch as a member of the ” greatest generation “.

By all means, please put your legend on the pitch this Saturday.

  7. Saw Agudelo play v. Toronto FC in Orlando. The kid is ridiculously talented. Fast, not afraid to take people one on one, has a nice shot on goal…was very impressed. Good for NYRB.

  8. Wolyniec is a legend here in NY. its gonna be a lot tougher to let him loose than it was for your Bridgeview Fire to let go of Blanco

  9. Please, for the love of everything holy cut Wolyniec now.

That man looks like a 60 year old burn victim. Needless to say any highlight he pops up on (which is most likely going to be him shoving players from behind) sucks for league just based on his appearance.

We did our part with Blanco. Now you follow suit New Jersey

  10. i asked Ives that question a few weeks back, and he said that if he entered this years draft, he would have been a “top 10 pick for sure”

  11. with the amount of time it took to sign this kid (there was a contract agreed upon between RBNY and Agudelo – just waiting on MLS’s confirmation), im sure Garber and Co. were looking vigorously through the MLS rulebook to find someway to get him NOT to sign with us

  12. After that game vs Santos I don’t see how he would want to sign for millionaros, he will be worth more than jozy.

  13. that sound you hear are other team’s fans getting jealous. NY no longer will be the league’s whipping boy. Cant wait till the squad is reinforced with the promised DP in July

  14. Where’s that one kid who never stops trashing the Red Bulls? At least his posts were longer than three words/syllables….

  15. That is great!! Was kind of expecting he was going to be signed by Chicago or Philly per some unknown MLS rule that requires every RBNY talent to go to their competitors (Duka)
