SBI Live Q&A

Good afternoon everybody. The 15th season of Major League Soccer will kick off tonight with the Seattle Sounders playing host to the expansion Philadelphia Union. What better time is it to have a new SBI Live Q&A?

Submit your question in the CoverItLive template, and I will answer as many questions as I can for the next hour (or so).

  1. Thanks for the response, Ives. Journalism is a strange profession in that way in that there is this objective attachment, at least from the perspective of not necessarily rooting for teams that you write about.

  2. For sure, I was grateful for this too. I like to read Ives’ answers to our questions, but doing it live is even better because we can build off each other. Thanks again Ives!

  3. The question about whether Ives is a fan of the USMNT is a good one. What do you all think? I think as a fan, we want to see some “homerism” if that’s a word. It makes me feel strange if someone who covers the US is not a fan in the least bit. I think you can write relatively objectively about a team and still be a fan, in fact, you should have an opinion. I don’t see how you can cover something and not be a fan of it.

Of course, Ives writes well and it won’t stop me from reading his blog or his articles.

(SBI- Why can’t you have an opinion if you’re not a fan of a team? Most sports writer aren’t fans of the teams they cover, and I can tell you that writers who have been fans quickly lose that fan connection once they’re covering a team. If anything, I think not being a fan makes your opinion more pure and based on reality rather than loyalties or preferences. That’s not to say a “fan” couldn’t be objective, but I think it can be tougher for a fan to be objective. )

  9. It has, but I am having all kinds of issues. It either wont load or it loads without images and links don’t work.

You’d think this would be debugged prior to opening day.
