USA vs. the Netherlands: Match Day Commentary

U.S. Crest Netherlands crest

The U.S. national team will take on one of the world's top teams in its final test before the World Cup roster is due when it faces the Netherlands at Amsterdam ArenA today (2:30pm, ESPN2 and Galavision).

The U.S. should have its hands full as it faces a nearly full-strength Netherlands squad that boasts plenty of attacking flair. Today's match will also serve as a measuring stick for some of the fringe players looking to make the World Cup team.

This is Franco Panizo and I will be providing commentary throughout the match so please feel free to follow along here on SBI (especially if you're stuck at work). As always, you are welcome to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

Enjoy the match.

FINAL- That's all for me today. Stay tuned to SBI for post-game coverage of today's match, and as always, please feel free to share your thoughts and opinions below.

—–

FINAL- As for positive outings? It's tough to say in a match that was controlled in large parts by the Netherlands. But Bocanegra and DeMerit did look good in the back, and Beasley had his moments in the second half.

—–

FINAL- So which U.S. players failed to make the most of their opportunity today? Well the most notable ones were Findley, Torres and Bornstein.

——

FINAL- Sneijder and the Dutch midfield dominated today's game and the U.S. couldn't find an answer until the flurry of subs were made.

——

FINAL- The Netherlands wins this one, 2-1. The U.S.'s late surge wasn't good enough to earn it a draw.

——

94th minute- The corner is too high and the Netherlands are on the counter.

——

93rd minute- A blast from long range by Altidore is swatted away for a corner. What a shot.

——

92nd minute- Spector has time to hit a cross, but mis-hits it and it goes out of bounds. That looked promising.

——

91st minute- USA wins a corner and Goodson smashes one off balance but it goes too high! WOW.

——

90th minute- Beasley's free kick is too soft and doesn't trouble Stekelenburg.

——

89th minute- A foul on Bedoya gifts the U.S. a free kick at the top of 18. Wow.

——

88th minute- GOAL USA!!! 2-1! Beasley swerves in a cross on a free kick that Bocanegra heads home from close range!

——

88th minute- Altidore draws a foul. I have to say this, Altidore's hold up play has improved. That has definitely been a positive to take away from tonight.

——

86th minute- Bradley making another change: Goodson subbed in for Bornstein. Not a good showing for Bornstein tonight.

——

81st minute- A left footed blast by Van der Vaart is beautifully saved by Howard! Wow.

——

80th minute- The Bradley free kick hits Altidore and goes out for a goal kick. And the Dutch make a change: Babel in for Kuyt.

——

78th minute- Altidore draws a foul near the 18. USA free kick.

——

77th minute- Good combination play by Beasley and Pearce to get a cross off. Not enough of that tonight.

——

76th minute- Donovan comes out and Johnson goes in. Donovan didn't get too involved today, but not many passes went his way, either.

——

74th minute- Unlucky goal to give up there by the U.S., but thems the breaks. Let's see if the U.S. can at least close this game out positively.

——

73rd minute- GOAL NETHERLANDS! 2-0! A shot by Huntelaar ricochets off Bornstein and rolls into the back of the net.

——

70th minute- Pearce comes in for DeMerit. Pearce will play left back, and Bornstein will tuck in to play centrally.

——

69th minute- A good combination from Donovan and Spector results in a cross and a corner for the U.S.

——

67th minute- Substitution for the Netherlands: Van Bronkhorst out. Braafheid in.

——

65th minute- Beasley ends a nice passing sequence with a cross along the six yard box that Altidore reached too late. That's much better passing from the Americans.

——

65th minute- Donovan goes up top behind Altidore, Bedoya will man right wing and Beasley is on the left.

——

63rd minute- U.S. sub: Bedoya for Findley.

——

60th minute- Van der Vaart in for De Jong.

——

58th minute- Is the U.S. playing a Central American country? The Dutch are flopping all over the place.

——

56th minute- Some nice moves by Elia get him by Bornstein and the Dutch win a corner.

——

53rd minute- The U.S. midfield is just overmatched right now. Sneijder and co. are dominating possession.

——

50th minute- Sneijder releases Elia, but some bad touches by the Dutch forward allow Bornstein to get back and deflect his shot. Howards scoops up the deflected shot.

——

47th minute- Altidore with a clever backheel to get by Vaar. Nice move there.

——

HALFTIME- USA sub: Edu for Torres. Edu is coming off a game-winning goal performances for Rangers in the Old Firm, so let's see how he does.

——

HALFTIME- Two subs for Netherlands. Vlaar for Mathijsen and Huntelaar for Robben.

——

HALFTIME- Harkes reporting that Holden is being taken for x-rays as a precautionary measure.

——

HALFTIME- ESPN2 showing some scores from the day. Algeria lost to Serbia 3-0, Slovenia is beating Qatar 3-1 at halftime, and Egypt is up 1-0 over England in the first half. I'm sure U.S. fans are loving that final score.

——

HALFTIME- What are some halftime subs we could see? I wouldn't be surprised to see Edu in for Torres or Pearce for Bornstein. Findley could also be replaced by Johnson.

——

HALFTIME- Bob Bradley will surely be pleased by the stout defending his team demonstrated for much of the first half. Definitely won't be pleased with Bornstein's tug.

——

HALFTIME- What does the U.S. need to do in the second half to get back into this game? Donovan needs to get more touches and the U.S. needs Torres to be cleaner with his passing, assuming he stays on the field.

——

HALFTIME- The ref blows the whistle to end the first half and the U.S. trails 1-0.

——

45th minute- A cross to Robben gets handled by Bornstein, but no call. Wow. Bornstein is struggling big time.

——

41st minute- If this scoreline and situation looks similar, it should. Bornstein surrendered a penalty kick against Slovakia in the friendly in November. Slovakia converted that spot kick and won the game 1-0.

——

40th minute- GOAL NETHERLANDS! 1-0! Kuyt gets Howard to go the wrong way as he slots his penalty kick low and to the left.

——

39th minute- Some nice passing by the Dutch sees Sneijder get into the box, where Bornstein tugs him down. Penalty kick called.

Bad foul by Bornstein. His detractors are definitely going to be out in numbers now.

——

37th minute- Another late challenge by the Netherlands, this time by Mathijsen on Altidore. No card.

——

34th minute- DaMarcus Beasley subbed in for Holden. His first taste of action for the U.S. since his horrid display against Brazil in the Group Stage match of the Confederations Cup.

——

33rd minute- Torres rips one from range and his shot goes just high. Almost surprised Stekelenburg there.

——

32nd minute- Holden looks to be in serious pain. Hopefully it is nothing too serious.

——

30th minute- De Jong commits a late challenge on Holden, who is still down on the ground. Not good.

Beasley is warming up.

——

29th minute- Findley called for offside. Good passing out of the back by the U.S., though.

——

25th minute- Another shot from outside the area by Sneijder is easily scooped up by Howard.

——

22nd minute- A very well played ball by Bradley almost springs Findley, but some good defending prevents any thought of that.

——

20th minute- Donovan hasn't had many touches so far. He needs some if the U.S. wants to have some success going forward.

——

19th minute- The free kick is taken and gets behind Bornstein, but Robben can't control it to get a shot on goal. Bornstein can't let that happen.

——

18th minute- Torres fouls Sneijder and gets a warning for it.

——

17th minute- Elia with another move on Spector that finds him enough space for a cross. DeMerit blocks it off well.

——

16th minute- Bocanegra launches a long ball forward that Findley does well to get onto and trap, but his shot is way too weak.

——

16th minute- The Netherlands enjoying much of the possession over the past few minutes.

——

14th minute- The Dutch fans doing their best impersonation of the Mexican chant "Ole".

Sneijder with a shot from distance, but it doesn't really trouble Howard.

——

13th minute- Nothing comes of the corner.

——

12th minute- Torres tries to clear the ball and hits it towards Howard, who has to punch the ball over the crossbar for a corner. Wow.

——

10th minute- Holden finds space and gets a cross off, but it goes to the hands of Stekelenburg. Some good buildup play by Altidore there and a good outlet pass by Bradley to find Holden.

——

7th minute- A good move by Elia leaves Spector trailing, and his cross results in a shot after some miscommunication by the U.S.

——

6th minute- A chipped pass by Sneijder is blocked off well by Bocanegra in order to allow Howard to get to it. Nice job by Bocanegra there.

——

5th minute- A Torres pass is intercepted and the Netherlands tries to counter but a long cross is gobbled up by Howard.

——

4th minute- Bradley commits a foul near midfield. How many more times is Harkes going to say someone is "having a good season"?

——

3rd minute- Robben gets a cross by Bornstein but Bocanegra knocks it away.

——

1st minute- Altidore wearing no. 12 today as opposed to 17, which was his number throughout the Hexagonal. I bet that ruins some people's recent jersey orders.

——

1st minute- And we're off!

——

PRE-GAME- How many mispronunciations were there just now by John Harkes? Drink away folks.

——

PRE-GAME- The players are out on the field and we're just about ready for kickoff.

——

PRE-GAME- So what does everyone think of the new road jerseys? They're made from recycled material which is a pretty cool tidbit.

——

PRE-GAME- Kudos to SBI poster Aaron in StL, who has come up with today's drinking game. We will drink every time the ESPN announcers botch a Dutch players' name. I hope you all ate something.

——

PRE-GAME- So while we wait for Mike and Mike in the Morning to end, how about some predictions? I'm going 2-2.

——

PRE-GAME- So is it too early to establish a drinking game for today's match? I didn't think so.

——

PRE-GAME- How Bornstein and Spector cope with the Dutch wingers could prove to be the key to today's game. A solid game today from Bornstein might silence some of his detractors, but then again, it might not.

——

PRE-GAME- Netherlands' subs: Huntelaar, Van der Vaart, Babel, Ooijer, Velthuizen, De Zeeuw, Braafheid, Boschker, Afellay, Engelaar, Vlaar, Schaars.

Talked about a loaded bench.

——

PRE-GAME- Here is the Netherlands' XI:

—–Robben———–Alia————Kuyt—–

———————-Sneijder——————

———-Van Bommel——-De Jong———

-Van Bronckhorst—Mathijsen–Heitinga—Van der Weil

——————-Stekelenburg—————-

——

PRE-GAME- The U.S. subs: Guzan, Goodson, Pearce, Edu, Bedoya, Beasley, Johnson. Six subs allowed per team in today's friendly.

——

PRE-GAME- I'm sure a lot of fans are intrigued (and surprised) by Torres getting his first start since the road qualifer at Costa Rica. Today's game will be huge for him.

——

PRE-GAME- Can't say I'm surprised with the inclusion of Findley. Despite his past two lacklustre performances with the U.S. B team, he showed glimpses of being a capable player. A game with the regulars will probably give head coach Bob Bradley a better sense of if Findley is able to perform at this level.

——

PRE-GAME- Here is the U.S. lineup:

————-Findley————Altidore——–

–Donovan—–Torres——-Bradley——-Holden–

–Bornstein—-Bocanegra—-DeMerit——-Spector–

———————–Howard————————-

  1. both teams were very unimpressive. US does have an excuse for not finding their rhythm: another very very questionalble ref. He either didn’t call obvious committed against US or he gave the dutch a call when there shouldn’t have been. I counted 16 of these decisions against US. Its hard to win when you have to play against the ref.

  2. Totally agree; I would taken Holden over Beasley any day; he has a great first touch and his crossing has only gotten better. He proves to be very dangerous when he can get any amount of space…well, when he’s not getting taken down by some dirty tackles in a FRIENDLY.

  3. What an embarassing performance by the Americans! Demeritt and Beasley were the only two with some balls; everyone else seemed to tip-toe around out there. Donovan is the freeking Invisible Man!

  4. MB played well I agree, but not MOTM.

Watch the replay of the 2nd Dutch goal.

A USMNT player jogs in place, reaching neither the Dutch player with the ball nor the guy he sets up for the shot.

But he has a great view of the unfolding play and the goal : )

    That would be your MOTM.

I felt like deja vu all over again – coincidentally around 70th minute – in 2 world cup qualifiers last summer MB pulled the same thing, and caught his breath while the other team set up easy scores.

MB played well after his flub, but sorry not worthy of MOTM.

  5. As far as the central midfield goes, I think Feilhaber is now the man to start next to Bradley when we take on teams like Slovenia and Algeria, and Edu is the man to start next to Bradley when we take on teams like England and the Netherlands. The reason is that while they each are markedly better on one side of the ball, they’re not completely uncomfortable going on to the other side. Feilhaber has great skill, passing, touch and creativity, but he also shows a good amount of bite and strength on and off the ball. Edu uses athleticism, ability to read the game defensively, and smart tackling, but he also shows touch, sharp passing, and reads the game offensively as well. Feilhaber and Bradley did well against Slovenia when they were together in the first half. Feilhaber sat deep and helped the USA keep possession by spraying the ball around creatively and getting different players involved in the game while Bradley covered ground, heavy lifting, distributed sharply, and charged forward to combined well with the front four, just like he did today on a couple occasions today. Mind you, Slovakia sat back that game, but with the USA’s players like Beasley, Donovan, Altidore, Pearce, and Spector, the USA should be able to stretch the opposition and push them deep if they don’t do it themselves. The USA should lineup like this against Algeria and Slovenia:

    ——————————Altidore—————

    ——————-Dempsey—————————-

    Beasley—————————————-Donovan

    ——————————–Bradley—————

    ——————-Feilhaber————————–

    Pearce————————————–Cherundolo

    ——————-Bocanegra—-Onyewu—————-

    —————————Howard———————

Insert Edu for Feilhaber against England, but I think this will become our lineup.

  6. If you think beasley starts before an inform Holden, ur insane.
You think beasley has leadership? Have you READ HIS TWITTER? He follows pornstars on twitter, check it out then tell me he has leadership. Read his comments then tell me hes a rolemodel.

He did well but i’d take Holdens first touch possession, passing, and crossing over anything beasley offers.

  7. Bornstein still sucks against real competiton.

he is competent against lower level concacaf teams but we dont play any of them in the world cup.

    Reply
  8. I thought Torres looked just fine — good composure, good passing, good off-the-ball movement — either he or Feilhaber must play alongside Bradley.

Does anyone else think that Edu could be the solution at LB? He couldn’t be worse out there than Bornstein or Pearce or Bocanegra or Beasley or (am I forgetting anyone else?). Otherwise, why not Cherundolo and Spector on the field at the same time? Also, where was Simek?

    Hope that Holden is OK!

  9. Cairo…you need to coach this team!!!!! Our Defense held up to the 3rd best team in the world. Midfielders played defensively (torres attack…Edu defense) so dispite some imperfections, THEY HELD UP THEIR END OF THE DEAL. Our only problem is our attack. We have “blanks” up front and at this level run, pass, kick is not enough, and it seems thats what Bob loves. We need dribblers that can create something out of nothing because right when they cut off the passing lane to a player, our guys up front dont have the skill to take opponents on. Altidore, Johnson, Edu are all one in the same, physical, speed, pass, and thats it, so dont put too much of them in at once.

  10. Poor Bornstein…I got out of class right at the 40 min mark and walked into the lobby to see him attempting WC suicide…*epic palm-to-face*…I still think he deserves to be in the squad though.
Who WILL be ready in June to guard Walcott and SWP?
Besides that, I was definitely a little bothered I had to wait another 45+ mins to see a blue run through a tackle or have a little courage on the ball.

  11. I thought Edu showed good passing, touch, and poise on the ball. Even if he didn’t do much offensively, he’s a defensive midfielder; who cares?

  12. I think being disappointed by the performance today shows a glaring lack of perspective. This is the Netherlands here, a perennial powerhouse missing very few starters. They’ve destroyed GREAT teams in meaningful competitions.
I think fans demand a bit too much from the Nats in wanting to see a free flowing pass style offense which the US has never demonstrated it can play consistently against top level competition.
Even when the US has beaten great teams, it has done so usually with counter attacking tactics and great defensive performances. Why would this change all of a sudden? A lack of possession and a difficulty completing passes is going to be expected against high pressure elites like NED, Spain, and England. Sure the US might have days when it can display a flowing passing offense, but these are exceptions (or against weak competition). Look at some of those awful Chelsea-Liverpool games. Those teams are defensive minded sure, but their players are mostly world class stars who can definitely complete passes. Yet those games are often stunted boring affairs devoid of pretty play. If Chelsea and Liverpool struggle to play free flowing ball against high quality opponents what makes you think the US (with drastically less talented players) can do it?

With the exception of God, country and my family I love few things more than the US Nats, so this isn’t a knock on them. Its just the reality of being a developing team in a sport where the best countries have a huge head start. Patience is key. I believe we will one day be a great soccer nation.
A 2-1 loss to the Netherlands (neither NED goal being a solid effort) where it could be argued we were unlucky to tie and pressed hard to win the game towards the end is nothing to be ashamed of.

  13. I disagree. I think you’ve downplayed Torres play completely. He wasn’t horrible, but he didn’t do much of anything to advance the USA attack. Nearly had an own goal, drew a yellow for petty arguing(although that was a vicious tackle), and passed poorly in advance positions. You say ” A couple of bad passes, So what”. Torres is brought in here for his touch, skill, and creativity. He didn’t show any of that tonight, and had very little impact.

  14. Sometimes I wonder if we’re all watching the same game. After this one, and assuming that everyone except Charlie Davies is healthy, I’d go with this:

    Altidore Dempsey
    Beasley Bradley Torres Donovan

    Pearce/Boca Gooch DeMerit Spector
    Howard

Holden, Bedoya, Edu, and Clark off the bench in the midfield, in that order. Cherundolo as top defensive sub, with Bornstein in emergency duty. Have no idea what to do up front beyond Altidore/Dempsey. Ching, obviously, and dare I say it, Freddy Adu?

    As for individuals:

Bornstein–hate to bash on him because he’s a team player and works hard. But he looked outclassed today and I’ll be disappointed if he’s starting in the WC. Not angry if he’s on bench, but that’s it.

Beasley–He looked like the experienced pro that he is. We crucified him for the mistake in Confeds Cup, but he’s one of our best 11. He’s not afraid, still has jets, and keeps defenses honest.

Bedoya–this guy is going to be on the plane. He seems to get in good positions, shows poise on the ball, and isn’t a deer in the headlights

Spector, Boca, DeMerit–I thought they all did pretty well. We still suck at distributing out of the back, but they fought hard and held their own.

Altidore–he’s gotten a lot better at holding the ball up, and most of our chances tonight he was involved. He’s so much more confident with USMNT than with Hull. Loved that he took on defenders on several occasions

Torres–started slow but really settled into the game. He’s calm on the ball, and I wish our defenders would play the ball to him instead of just kicking it away. He’s confident enough not to lose it. Those who say he needs more defense are wrong. He gets in good positions, and even had a nice hard takedown on Scheijder. We didn’t lose today due to Torres’ defense, that’s for sure.

Edu–people will think I’m crazy, but I’d still rather have Torres. He seems like a 5th defender, which suits Bradley, but he doesn’t offer much going forward.

Findlay/EJ–I like them, but they serve no purpose on this team. If they make SA, they shouldn’t play more than mopup minutes.

Holden-looked good until injury–he’ll go to SA as sub.

  15. Certainly didn’t see much creativity until the last 10 minutes but I guess we were just giving a few guys a last tryout…Was NOT impressed with Donovan. He didn’t seem into it at all. Torres didn’t do much at all to control anything or stop anyone or create. Bradley was hustling but I didn’t see him create much either. I did like Beasley. I liked Holden before he got hurt. I liked Altidore but did NOT like Findley and Altidore probably suffered because of Findley pretty much being outclassed and scared. I liked Edu when he came in; very poised and in control. Way better than anything Clark will do for us. I liked Goodson a lot. Bornstein was a horror and Spector got worked by that kid. Worked.
Our wing backs got exposed badly today and we better have someone else to step in: Pierce and Dolo?
Our center got a lot better when Edu stepped in and I also liked the creativity of Bedoya and I think we should keep him for SA.

  16. your off-base chief.

To be completely fair to Torres…yeah he was dissapointing, but can you honestly say that there were other players that had more posession than him other than bradley? I mean…he and holden had the only shots on target in the first half. In addition to that, Bradley gave up just as much posession as torres..and you can throw in other names in that hat as well like JB, JD (with his boom ball out of the back) I bet if you go back and take another look, torres had most of the posession in the MF. Once they took out torres, the passing out of the MF stopped and the flanks were in play. Maurice added nothing in the middle. He was a 5th defender in my opinion.

And again, everyone played like crap because its the #3 team in the world. Thats what is suppose to happen. We are not as good as we think we are.

  17. Here’s what I’m seeing after this match.

Bornstein gets a seat on the plane…but should never sniff the bench in SA. Between Spector, Dolo, & Boca, we can survive at LB/RB. Gooch, Demerit, Boca, Goodson (and Edu) can hold down the fort on the back line.

Bradley, Edu, Donovan, Dempsey across the middle, but I want to suggest using a more amorphous front 6. Jozy must play. His creativity and athleticism is too much for the English backline to handle…not to mention Algeria and Slovenia. But Dempsey, Donovan, Beasley, Edu and Bradley all need significant PT. Benny F., Torres as backups.

CD9? Please FSM, heal his arms and legs. All the following is expecting CD9 to not be healthy in time. If he is…all bets are off.

    My XI?

    ————–Jozy——————
    –Donovan—-Dempsey———DMB—-
    ——-Bradley——–Edu———–
    –Spector—Gooch-(JD/Boca)—Dolo–
    ————–Howard—————-

LD, Deuce, and DMB play interchangeably in the withdrawn wing/withdrawn striker levels. I think LD and DMB on the outsides because of their defensive workrate. This lineup also subs liberally with Feilhaber and Torres depending on matchups. Ching, Findley, Ricardo on the bench as injury/late fatigue

(Bornstein, Goodson, Casey who never sniff the field except for disastrous injuries), GK2, GK3, and the guy I’m sure I’m forgetting are the rest of the 23.

  18. So I didn’t watch the whole game due to my being at work, but I caught most of it. That being said:

Bornstein – I think he has officially played himself off of the starting LB job. If he starts ahead of Pearce or Spector in SA I will flip out.

Torres – I don’t understand why Bradley doesn’t let this guy play. He started off a little shaky but I thought he settled in well and had a nice shot on goal.

Edu – Solid, I would like to see him get more time with Bradley in midfield.

    Bradley – Beast.

Altidore – I think he has matured and gained some confidence in the EPL. Very active from the start. He is starting in SA. His partner up top is still in question.

Holden – Great minutes, hope he isn’t sidelined too long.

Beasley – Is it safe to say that he’s back? I think so.

Goodson – I like this CB more and more each time he is on the pitch.

    Findley – not impressed.

Spector – looked good most of the match.

Bacanegra – nice goal, did well overall

Demerit – Very solid defender, good game

Johnson – I don’t know what to say, I didn’t really see him

    Bedoya – see above

As it stands right now (assuming some injured players are fit and ready in time) this is who I would start in SA:

    Howard

    Cherundolo, Demerit, Onyewu, Pearce

    Donovan, Bradley, Edu, Beasley

    Altidore, Dempsey

  19. I would have to say that one of the beauty of soccer is that even the US can make it a respectable score line or win when they are outclassed. Of course we can get spanked as well.

Ives for John Harkes’ job. Harkes is an utter tool. Wynalda for Harkes’ job even though I know that Wynalda doesn’t want it.

    Harkes is a tool

  20. To say Torres did not do well. BOOOO!

He created the only dangerous opportunity with his shot on goal in the first half. He also showed some great control of the ball in tight spaces under pressure. He had a couple of bad passes, so what?

You introduce DeMarcus Beasley based on his play in the Confederations Cup. Yes, an experienced successful US Player’s whole career defined by 1 bad game coming back from knee injury. BOO to that too.

Beasley outplayed Landon Donovan tonight. When Donovan gets subbed the excuse is, “he did not get many passes tonight.” He is our best player, isn’t he supposed to create chances for our team?

The whole US setup is really starting to smell when guys like Bornstein can stay on for the majority of the game after creating the penalty and consistently get burned and Torres gets pulled because he made a couple of bad passes.

Torres did fine for his 1st game starting. I want to see more of him on the field.

The US did fine, until that stupid penalty. It is that kind of stupid play from a player like Bornstein that will cause us trouble at the WC. In the WC, they would probably give him a red.

  21. I have been saying for months that Bornstein is not a defender……Thats 3 games where he was responsible for the goals scored against us…….The Beas is Back!

  22. I agree man, USA played good I think. Especially if you take out Bornstein, Findley and Donovan (hate to say it, but it seemed like he mailed this game in).

Beasley was a monster and I hate that people take away from USA performance in 2nd half. The subbed in players for Netherlands are still good players!!
