Wednesday Rewind: One Bradley honored, one Bradley injured, and more

Bob Bradley (AP)

Bob Bradley was named the National Coach of the Year by the U.S. Olympic Committee on Wednesday. The honor goes to the top coach among U.S. national team coaches in all sports.

Bradley earned the honor after guiding the U.S. men's national soccer team to a Confederations Cup Final, Gold Cup Final as well as first place in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying.

It wasn't all good news for the Bradley family though. U.S. midfielder Michael Bradley suffered a broken nose in training with Borussia Moenchengladbach on Wednesday, and underwent surgery to repair his nose later in the same day. Bradley was already missing the team's upcoming match vs. Hamburg due to card accumulation, but he is not expected to miss much time beyond that.

Wednesday was a busy day for Americans in Europe.

There were mostly disappointing results on Wednesday, with Clint Dempsey, Maurice Edu and DaMarcus Beasley all suffering Cup losses. Dempsey's Fulham fell to Tottenham, 3-1, in FA Cup quarterfinal action. Edu and Beasley both played 90 minutes, but  Dundee United upset Rangers, 1-0, in Scottish Cup action.

U.S. national team goalkeeper Tim Howard struggled with a hip injury, but battled through it to help Everton post a 2-0 victory against Manchester City. The match marked Howard's 100th consecutive start for Everton and the win pulled Everton to within three points of sixth place in the Premier League, and the Europa League berth that comes with it.

What do you think of these developments? Happy to see Edu and Beasley earning major minutes? Worried about Tim Howard catching the national team injury bug?

The fact that Bradley is predominantly right footed is not what is keeping him from being an elite player.

Being two footed is a great thing and should be encouraged more but I notice it hasn’t ke[t a very, very long list of players down through history from playing at an elite level. Look at Arjen Robben, David Beckham, and go back to Franz Beckenbauer who used his left foot to stand on. Watch an EPL match sometime and you will see just how many preferentially one footed players are out there.

  2. Two thoughts:

    1. Gooch’s injury is a career threatener too. A patellar tendon rupture is a big deal. Tendons and ligaments can take longer than bones to heal. Give him a little time to get healthy and fit.

    2. When is Michael Bradley going to trust his left foot? The kid is an unbelievable talent for someone who only goes right 95% of the time. If he developed any sort of confidence with his left, he could start for an elite team. Until then, he’s in the right place.

  3. Yea, permit access is a major reason why those guys are there. There would be many more Americans on reserve teams and with lower league clubs if the process to gaining a work visa were more relaxed.

  4. Yeah Anton Pertilen and Cody Arnoux, both signed this summer and play for the reserve team. Neither have a real chance of playing for the first team, but cost nothing and had easy permit access so everton gave them a try…Problem is they are both like 22 and 23 so they are a little old, basically as the same starting spot most english players are at age 17 and 18. Would not be devestated as an Everton (First) and United States Fan. Like having more americans their, but its not essential and they could prolly do better for themselves else where.

  5. And the potent and terror-inducing blocking skills of Goalkeeper Gunnleifur Gunnleifsson (say that three times fast)do the trick versus the tri. Not good for our boys in red white & green.

  6. Sorry, I combined two teams!

It’s not the stature of the team or the league. He just doesn’t seem to be having much luck there. I also don’t know if I would call him a consistent starter. It seems like he has missed a lot of games.

  7. Way to scary me over a broken nose.

(SBI-Let’s be serious, if Michael Bradley suffered a significant injury do you think it would be the second item in a round-up? Come on now.)

  8. I think losing Howard would be HUGE. This close to the cup and you lose the backbone to your defense. No question that Guzan and Hanneman (sp?) are quality but the team repore and confidence that comes with Howard would be irreplaceable. Freidel is the only other American at Howards level but he would not bring the previously
mentioned Intangibles. Hope Howard is OK.

  9. Mexico against powerful Iceland is scoreless in the second half.If anything did happen to Howard, I think Friedel would hear his phone ring.

  10. Way to give me a freaking heart attack, Ives!

    Never do that again!

(SBI-What did I do exactly? If there is a major US player injury you can rest assured it won’t be buried in an evening ticker.)

  12. It’d be cool to see him make a move to Liverpool, but that would probably take Mascherano going to Barcelona to make it worthwhile. MB can definitely play, and his physical style would be great in England… he would just really have to work on discipline.

He likes to get up which is good and all, but his best shot is by being that guy that disrupts the other teams MF and can spring an attack with effective passing.

  13. Im hoping Brad Friedel comes out of retirement.. he is as good as tim howard maybe even better considering howard’s slight injury

  14. yea dempsey looked good. a lot of times i saw him wide open in a good position with a look on goal and his teammates would just lose the ball or try and chip it up for a header or something they really were not playing on his level

  15. i watched the Everton game today and i really was scared when i saw Howard go down and stay down. it was pretty messed up, too, as Tevez looked to kind of stick his leg in Howard’s way as he jumped for the ball. he landed pretty hard i really thought we were screwed for a second. he’s a beast though he shrugged the medic off and fought through it like the true badass he is

  16. It sounds like Dempsey had a good game for the time he played. A few decent shots that resulted in corners and some good runs that his teammates flubbed up.

  17. It takes about six weeks for the cartilage to harden back to normal. My guess, and this is from very recent experience (I broke mine a month ago playing) is that his willingness to go into a 50/50 header full speed might be diminished a bit.

Then again, Maybe he is a lot more courageous than I am. I never went and got a mask to play with.

  18. I’m with you on that. I’m comfortable with at least 3-4 other guys that could step right in at that position and play at a very high level. That said, don’t want to lose Howard.

  19. I agree; Bradley is probably among my top 5 Americans to have a great World Cup. He already was very good at the Confederations Cup, and I’d say he would fit in very well at a team like Liverpool or Everton. Then again, he could continue the tradition of Americans at Fulham. I could see him and Danny Murphy pairing well.

  20. Cool about Everton. I suppose I am guilty of not pulling for them very much until Donovan joined but I do like to see a team without the highest paid stars beat up on the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea or Man U. IF they keep playing this well, they might actually have a shot at 4th.

  21. i mean yeah, it would kinda suck if howard went down, but im supremely confident in our backup goalkeepers to hold it down.

  22. Well Ives does think M. Bradley stands a good chance of being picked up by a decent EPL team. I wouldn’t bet against it, either.

  23. its BORUSSIA first of all and second why would he leave it? A consistant starter in a mid-table team in one of the top leagues in europe.

  24. Let’s see if everyone thinks Bob Bradley is Coach of the Year after the World Cup.Let me guess, Bob Bradley did well to get to the first round of the World Cup?

I’m beginning to think Michael Bradley should run, not walk, away from Bayern Moenchengladbach.
