CARSON-Edson Buddle's goal-scoring streak officially turned into a record-breaking streak on Saturday night as he scored two more goals to lead the Los Angeles Galaxy to a 2-1 victory against Real Salt Lake.

With the score tied in the 76th minute, Buddle notched the game winner when he finished off a pass from Juninho. The Galaxy defense made the goal stand up to help Los Angeles improve to a league-best 4-0.

Buddle opened up the scoring in the 12th minute with a beautiful header off a picture perfect Landon Donovan cross. The header beat the diving Rimando and gave Buddle the league record for most straight matches with a goal to start the season with four.

Following the goal, the match descended into an incredibly chippy affair as Jason Kreis' side seemed intent on putting a large number of pressure on the Galaxy, particularly Edson Buddle, who was blanketed by Nat Borchers all night.

Real Salt Lake found the equalizer in the 40th Minute after a Kyle Beckerman shot from 27 yards out that bounced right over the diving Donovan Ricketts. The defending champions nearly took the lead off an impressive sequence in the 65th minute when a Robbie Findley shot hit the crossbar. A minute later, Alvaro Saborio fired a header that went just over the crossbar.

On the whole however, the Real Salt Lake attack was largely ineffective as chances were few and far between due to the impressive defending of the stingy Los Angeles defense.

With the loss, Real Salt Lake falls to 1-2-1 on the season and will head to Columbus to take on the Crew while the Galaxy remain undefeated at 4-0 and will travel to Kansas City next week to face the Wizards.

  1. Findley’s shot hit the post. Saborio’s header hit the crossbar. Just saying.

RSL deserved a point in my opinion. Both teams had good stretches and a handful of dangerous moments.

Buddle was really impressive. The second goal was especially good, he found space between two defenders, set himself up perfectly with his first touch and hit a beautiful half volley.

  2. Disagree about the poor defense comment. But for a second, let’s assume you’re correct. The striker still has to score. Still has to be clinical. That’s what sets aparte avg strikers from really good ones. DO THEY FINISH THE CHANCES THEY HAVE?

Also, consider this. It’s my very unscientific opinion that at the international level (ie…WC), MOST goals are scored from slight defensive errors. ANd the great strikers are there to pounce and finish. Finish the one or two chances they have.

Right now, Buddle’s doing that…at least at the league level.
