Rookie striker Conor Chinn took his first step toward being known more for his professional soccer career than his brief childhood acting career by delivering two goals to help the New York Red Bulls score a 2-1 victory against Philadelphia in U.S. Open Cup play-in action at Red Bull Arena on Tuesday night.

Chinn scored goals a pair of first-half goals to help the Red Bulls advance to the next round of the U.S. Open Cup. They will next face New England on May 12 at Red Bull Arena, with the winner of that match taking on the Colorado Rapids for a place in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16.

The Red Bulls used the match to give playing time to several reserves, including rookie Tony Tchani, who impressed in central midfield. Veteran defender Chris Albright also looked good in 45 minutes of action, his first action in a year.

The Philadelphia Union may have lost more than just the match. Striker Sebastien LeToux suffered a knee injury in the second half. Head coach Peter Nowak said the injury was an MCL injury, but LeToux would need to undergo more scans on Wednesday.

What did you think of the match? Impressed with the Red Bulls' youngsters? Surprised to see a Philly team that featured eight starters in the second half couldn't pull out the win?

  1. Agree that the vibe was cool despite the small crowd. I was at the MLS opener and Saturday’s game too. Last night, while mellower, was still fun, and lots of volume from the Red Bull Supporters.

  2. Either RBNY had the greatest draft ever in January or Philly has the worst starting 11 this side of the 1999 Metrostars.

  3. Sensitive territory man. Those are our boys. Shep, in particular, is well loved in Metro circles. Our very own Harry Carey (albeit more alive, tanned, mustached, and famed for chewing tobacco ads). God bless em.

I’ll take a Steve and Shep cast any day of the week over Harkes and JP.

  4. Four.

I forgot that the Union ended with ten men after Le Toux was stretchered off; they had used up all of their subs (4) and couldn’t bring anyone else on.

  5. More than three, though I’ve seen varying accounts on the actual limit (4 or 5).

The Union used 4 last night: Arrieta, Le Toux, Moreno, and Miglioranzi.

  6. Hahaha…. yup. Steve and Shep are quite the tandem. I usually mute the games if I’m watching at home. Shep Messing has absolutely horrendous speaking ability. It’s like trying to ride a roller coaster of syllables for 90 minutes. So painful.

  7. I BEGGED… BEGGED my parents to buy me that Star Kick thing.

They said “no, it’s just a gimmicky thing”

Thanks mom and dad… I could have been playing in the US Open Cup Qualifier Round One, but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

  8. (1) The referee missed some obvious fouls. If more were at stake, the match could easily have gotten out of hand.

    (2) Separated at birth?: Greg Sutton and ex-Net Keith Van Horn.

    (3) Despite his trouble with some corners last night, Nielsen looks like the solution on the left wing that RBNY has been looking for since the departure of VDB.

  9. I was at the game and got a different impression.

    1. Albright looked very rusty in the air.

    2. Tchani is skillful, strong, and aggresive, but he plays selfishly. If he can fix that, he will be a good professional.

    3. Neilsen should not take corners. One waist-height to the first defender, one out-of-bounds.

    4. Couldn’t tell live, but on the replay you could see that the second goal took a lot of skill.

    5. Small crowd felt bigger than it was because the stadium is GREAT. Plus I drove for the first time (no traffic), parked for free on the street, and got food from the concessions without a 4-hour wait.

  10. Very Good: Chin, Sassano, Tchani and Borman

Good: Mendez, Boyens, Strammer, Agudelo, Da Luz

Ok: Sutton, Nilsen, Garcia, Woly, Albright And Ubi

I was expecting more from Ubi and Nilsen.

Da Luz didnt play a very good game but this kid know how to pass…

  11. Very worried about Le Toux!

Hope he’s alright. His energy got Philadelphia back into the game last night. Definitely the kind of guy you want playing with you, not against you.

  12. I think Greg Sutton is a more stable (but also less athletic) keeper than Bouna Coundoul.

I guess Danny Szetela didn’t make the Union team?

  13. fun game to watch with the red bulls showing some depth. good to see the rookies and last year’s guys play.
the officiating was HORRIBLE, though. where do they troll for the Open Cup refs?

  14. Dude, have you not watched a game on MSG before?? That was Steve Cangialosi and Shep Messing. It’s not like they pull some guys off the street.

  15. So what did he act in?

Always liked Chinn, happy to see him succeed. Looked smart out there.

Also nice to see more emerging Asian talent in MLS. It will hopefully encourage more diversity.

  16. I was at the match, a few observations…

    – the refs were horrible, Califf had at LEAST 2 handballs
    – Tchani has skill but needs to look no further than Seth Stammler to understand what it looks like to work hard for one’s team.
    – Nielsen is the real deal but last night looked like the 12 year-old who’s forced to sit at the kids table at Thanksgiving.
    – high hopes for the return of Albright.

  17. Ives, thanks for the streaming link to watch the PHL / NY game live. But, jeebus man, you should have warned us about the commentators. teh…..wurst….eva. That experience really set my soccer intelligence back about 26 years and I watched most of the game on mute.

Califf had two more (not called) hand balls in this match! What a clown, someone should cut off his arms.
