The Harris County Commissioners Court voted unanimously to approve a deal for the Houston Dynamo's new stadium project, clearing the final hurdle for the project before it takes the next step of beginning construction ahead of a 2012 opening.

The county and city of Houston have agreed to spend $10 million each in infrastucture for the project, along with $7.5 million each for the purchase of the land for the stadium, which will be built just East of downtown Houston. The Dynamo will spend $60 million on the stadium.

Here are some other stories from Tuesday:

  1. In all honesty, I didn’t read the whole Nothing Rhymes with Forever Blowing Orange Bubbles, just the money line.

Door hinge is weak-a*s stuff. Try telling that to Underdog. Dude was despondent after his nemesis took to stealing oranges. He couldn’t catch him cuz there was nothing he could rhyme with. He was so bent he was considering giving up crime fighting, until the thief got sloppy and stole an apple.

  2. i don’t agree… at least for how we say “Orange” in Houston (pronounced U-stun).

It’s not Or-inge but ornge and before juice its Ornch-juice.

    anyway, viva naranja 🙂

  3. bottom line is that the pitch won’t be nice with football games on it. another bottom line is that yeah, it’s pretty sick to get a new building.

  4. Even if you tack on another 20% for being in DC this still doesn’t compare to the triple digit millions of dollars DCU has been holding their hand out for. Even when they offered to pay for 100% of the stadium at Poplar Point they wanted triple digit millions of infrastructure improvements AND the development rights to all of the Poplar Point commercial/residential area.

  5. The prices reflect the cost of construction in Texas. Everything is priced differently in Texas because the local economy is different. Not a fair comparison. The cost of land alone completely changes the cost estimates.

That being said, I think any talks that the United FO is doing behind the scenes currently are for a modest 25k stadium.

  6. “Also, there have been rumors that AEG is willing to spend more than $60 mil if needed.”

Pathetic. The whole reason they left San Jose is that they said they couldn’t afford a privately financed stadium. Yet SJ 2.0’s is costing exactly 60 mil in private financing. AEG are a bunch of clowns.

  7. Take notice DC United. The city and the county are only spending $27.5M on the project. The rest comes from the ownership group. If DCU offers up the same financing terms I am confident they will also get a stadium. 6 football games a year is nothing.
