  1. But the questions remains…

    Why

    wasn’t

    this

    on

    TV

    in

    the

    first

    place?

If it was a late television rights issue, I could give them the benefit of the doubt THIS YEAR, but any other reason is invalid. INVALID! MLS needs to shove this league down people’s throats like vegetables to kids.

  2. Interesting line-up. A lot of talented players, but will they gel?

What’s funny is that tonight will determine if Philly’s first team is as good as NY’s reserves. Based on the crappiness of the Union’s attack on Saturday, I could see NY winning this one in extra time.

  3. Ives, if the game is being called by MSG staff online, why isn’t the game just on MSG regularly? It’s not like we need to see a boxing match from the 1970’s between Sweet Daddy Jenkins vs. Bobby “Don’t Touch That” Johnson.

    This madness needs to end!

  4. Clayton, the US Open Cup is sort of like the FA Cup in that every USSF-registered non-youth club is eligble to compete.

However, at all levels, there is no standard qualification process. USASA, PDL, and NPSL all have slots that are determined by competitions NOT part of the offical cup, such as picking the top team in the standings at a certain point, or having regional competitions count as cup qualifiers. They don’t do that in the FA, for example.

The draw in the cup proper is regionalized, and the home team is determined by application/bids. That’s how DC United has managed to play every cup game at home for two years.

I understand the reasons for all of that (to save money), but it messes with the integrity of the cup competition to allow teams to buy home field advantage. In the FA Cup, some minnow teams who have the home draw against a Premiership club opt to sell the right to play at home… but the fact that a draw results in a replay at the other team’s stadium returns some integrity to the process. Frankly, I was very relieved when DC lost at home to Seattle, as their attempt to buy a trophy was proved to be a failure.

  5. By the way … is the USOC the same thing as the English FA Cup and the Spanish Copa del Rey? Those are the coolest tourneys in domestic football. We need to get more love and publicity for the Cup. Congrats to Seattle for winning it last year.

  6. I agree, even if it is shown locally, have it up on the internet too for the rest of the nation.

What are they worried about having a mass exodus to the internet from the high def TV viewing?

  7. When you have a lot of people complaining about your website, you would think you could have someone read/respond to emails sent huh ?

  8. I don’t like how you can’t see the standings on the homepage or the race for the golden boot(you can on EPL). The last website had both, and that’s immediately where my eyes went when I opened up the homepage on Saturday after all the games had ended. The video is fanstastic on the website tho. Nice work MLS

  9. I wish more teams would air non-league matches. In a day where you can find pretty much anything you want to see (Indian Premier League cricket on YouTube, Arena Football League on NiFTy TV, National Lacrosse League though Livestream on their own sites), there’s no reason that we should be limited to seeing only league and Champions League matches.

Hint to MLS and U.S. Soccer: if you want to raise the profile of the Open Cup, make it available to be seen outside of the stadium.

  12. Cant wait to watch (via stream) the freshman of the Union. Hope Mwanga and Union Jack can do well together. Im guessing backline will be the starters considering they need some work together and we don’t have a lot of depth back there. Brad Knighton will also have a chance to show something.

  13. I would expect a very light crowd, I’m guessing around 3-6k. The match was not included in season ticket packages, which means everyone attending had to buy tickets separately, and the entire upper bowl is closed for the match.

I would also expect a lot of starters to be rested. A lot of young guys like Chinn, Tchani, Agudelo will probably get a chance to show what they’ve got.

  14. not very large crowd, it was not included in the season ticket package so there will probably not be a lot of season ticket holders there (including me) I have a busy week and work tonight. My guess is attendance is around 2k

  15. One problem is the website doesn’t give you a schedule of the games you’ll get to see live through the matchday program. Is it the same games as the satellite direct kick program? I emailed MLS and got no response.

  16. Making my first trip to RBA tonight for the game. What kind of crowd can we expect? Would also like to see a competitive lineup to win a few games in this tournament.

  17. A lot of people had ripped on the MLSsoccer.com website. I do understand there were gliches, but when you look at what it was designed to do…it rocks. I just don’t get it, maybe I care about different things than they do.

One thing is for sure, the video recap of every game is best way to spend a 1/2 hour Sunday AM outside of church, hands down.

Now a live stream from MSG for the game. Yes.

  18. it sounded like Backe wanted to start a pretty competitive 11 during US CUP play, but you gotta think he’ll give those young players a shot.
