This Weekend’s Soccer on TV

The most anticipated match of the European club season is upon us this weekend, and it may just wind up deciding who lifts the Spanish First Division title this season.

Real Madrid plays host to FC Barcelona on Saturday in the latest installment of 'El Clasico', and with both teams currently tied on points in the La Liga standings, a loss in this match could prove devastating to the loser's title chances.

There is plenty more on the weekend's soccer viewing menu than 'El Clasico'. You have the FA Cup semifinals, a loaded slate of MLS matches, and some interesting Mexican League matches.

Here is a rundown of this weekend's Top 10 matches to watch, along with this weekend's soccer on TV.

SBI'S TOP TEN MATCHES TO WATCH

1. Real Madrid vs. Barcelona. The most expensive team in the world takes on the best player in the world in this can't miss encounter.

2. Aston Villa vs. Chelsea. We all remember the seven-goal thrashing Chelsea put in the Villans. The question is whether Aston Villa can do something to gain revenge and earn a place in the FA Cup final.

3. Real Salt Lake vs. Seattle Sounders. Two West powers coming off tough losses face off in what should be a wide-open contest.

4. Fiorentina vs. Inter Milan. The race for the Scudetto is a tight one and Inter will need to avoid a slip-up against a dangerous Viola.

5. Houston Dynamo vs. Los Angeles Galaxy. Two unbeatens meet with an early hold on first place on the line.

6. Liverpool vs. Fulham. The Europa League semifinalists square off in a match that is much more important for a Liverpool side chasing a UEFA Champions League place.

7. Philadelphia Union vs. D.C. United. These teams may be winless but as the Union's first match, this one will be a special event and the birth of a new rivalry.

8. Puebla vs. Indios. Why is a match between Mexican bottom-feeders on this list? Red-hot Herculez Gomez will be looking to keep his scoring run going.

9. Sampdoria vs. Genoa. If you want a hot-blooded rivalry, you can do worse than this one, which should be an intense encounter (We scratched the Chivas Guadalajara match since Chivas' top stars won't be playing).

10. Hull vs. Burnley. Another bottom-feeder battle will be worth watching because Hull will be counting on Jozy Altidore to help them avoid relegation.

  1. Munch/Leverkusen match for me is the must watch match of the weekend! Bundasliga IMHO is as good as EPL. And certainly better than Spain. Those bottom feeders in Spain are not very watchable..

Also I will be trying to watch the Flumenese/Botofogo match on Saturday and the Flamengo/Vasco match on Sunday…

  2. Thanks for mentioning the RSL vs Seattle game! Home opener and no snow. Go RSL!! With that and the Barca vs RM game, a lovely soccer saturday awaits.

  3. Javier Hernandez won’t be playing for Chivas this weekend or any other weekend coming up. All of the National Team call ups have a two week vacation before going in for camp next week.

  4. I’m looking at the picture on this page and I’m willing to bet money that Messi took that ball away. you cant let him get that close

  5. Your joking right…. Bayern Munich v Bayer Leverkusen is one of the top matches of the season and Ives doesn’t even mention.

Time for people to realiz. That the Bundesliga has leaped above Serie A as a top 3 League easily…..

(SBI-I thought about that one but remember, the list pertains to Top 10 matches for American fans to watch. What about Bayern-Bayer makes it a must-watch for American fans?)

  6. How is Genoa vs Sampdoria not in your top 10? It’s one of the biggest derbies in Italy! Last time Sampdoria fans started rioting!

  7. Heard he was injured last week i think.
Espn not doing a game of the week for MLS since they did two games last week or something?

  8. I don’t have cable/satellite, some I’m not sure, but I believe Direct Kick and Matchday Live show the same games. And you can’t get the ESPN/FSC games on either one.

  9. What about the ones on Direct Kick? Are those available with MLS Matchday?

I watched the dc game on matchday last week and it wasn’t very good. Grainy picture.

  10. Not having my 6.45 AM Saturday HD match definitely gets my weekend off to a poor start.

Enjoyed watching the Colorado / Chicago game on Telefutura last week. All the names are still in English, and I don’t have to listen to Brian Dunseth.

  11. Obviously not on TV, but available free of charge live on team’s webpage are the NASL/USL matches. Would be cool if they’re at least included in the long list (obviously won’t make the top 10). Opening day on Saturday.

  12. Nationally broadcast games are not available live online from Matchday Live.

Having paid my $40 to MLS I will feel guilt-free finding the DC-Philly game from a different internet source.
