Torres on wrong end of worst tackle ever

JoseFranciscoTorres(ISIphotos.com)

Jose Francisco Torres is enjoying a successful season in Mexico with Pachuca, and is a safe bet to make the U.S. World Cup team, but he probably saw his life flash before his eyes after being hit with one of the most cruel tackles you'll ever see.

Here is the tackle, which took place last week during Pachuca's 2-1 CONCACAF Champions League loss to Cruz Azul (let me preface this by saying Torres is fine and finished out that game):

What did you think of that tackle? Did it make your eyes water just seeing that? Even more impressed with Torres for walking away from that? Wondering if Torres has been training under FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman?

  1. Hey, if he isn’t up to task, i will be MORE than happy to step up to the plate…

and then cower in fear from her knee melting beauty and limp away with my head hung low.

  2. OK so I went back and looked at it again to see if his studs were up….they were but how could he slide like that with his cleats down. Torres studs are up too. Unfortunate play but I see 2 players playing hard and trying to win a ball in a critical spot on the field. How did neither get seriously hurt is a good question…

  3. for me the placement might have been incidental, but Dominguez made no effort to bend his knee and absorb the blow; he kept his leg straight and locked. That, for me, is intent.

  4. I HATE with the power of 1000 burning suns these A’Holes that feign injury when they know they just committed a criminal foul. These P.O.Ses should be draw, quartered and shot in front of their family.

  5. If he hadn’t come in studs-up, I’d agree with you. Sometimes two guys slide in and bad things happen and it’s not really anyone’s fault. But the studs-up to the stud mechanism deserved the straight red. You come in studs-up and late like that on a standing player and you’re guaranteed at least a yellow if not the straight red.

  6. TECHNICALLY,

IF you know the RULES, that

    tackle was perfectly okay…

    I mean, HE did

    make contact with

    THE BALL(s) before the player!

    Go NY Bulls!…12 points in 4 games…

  7. Disagree with Robb and zhm5. Torres goes in sideways, studs down, and gets to the ball first. The other guy comes in in studs up with a straight leg out in front. That’s a red for me.

  8. Believe it or not, I agree. Bet we’re the only two. The other player also just happened to be a split second later. Yellow for sure, borderline on the red. Doesn’t make it any less painful to watch…

  10. Funny comments but doesnt it seem like they both did the same exact thing and Torres just got a bit unlucky on where the other guys foot ended up. I had this same situation happen a few years ago and both me and the other player(happened to be a good friend)both were close to breaking our legs. Honestly the straight red was a little too harsh for me. Im sure I will get killed for this….

  11. Holy crap. That hurts just looking at it. And then you see the slo-mo replay…yikes.

Credit JFT for going back into the game…”walk it off” is never easy in a case like this.

Credit the ref for showing red immediately.

Shame on the other guy for a) going in studs up and b) for trying to kill JFT’s kids.

  12. The ref didn’t even wait for him to get up. Straight red while he was laying in the ground. Now that’s a damn good ref.

  13. As someone who suffered a similar area injury (with an elbow during a tackle), he’s lucky nothing was injured.

    That being said… Ouch indeed.

  14. Holy Cow! when I caught the headline I thought the US had yet again lost another player to injury! Thankfully he’s ok, but I have no idea how after a collision like that. Count your lucky stars Torres, and see you in SA

  15. I think the offender will still argue that he got ball, just not the kind allowed by the rules.

Major props for finishing out the game, kid’s got some heart.

  16. I actually kind of thought that Torres was the one who MADE the tackle. When he said ” wrong end” I wasn’t all too sure what that could have meant.

  17. im sure she was in the stands or watching at home thinking “geez i hope it still works”

Ouch for torres, made me cringe every time i’ve seen it.

  18. for sure now torres should be on the roster to SA just for surviving such a horrific experience, but Ives you got to watch your titles..i thought he was really hurt badly, we can’t afford any more losses especially to the only depth we have on the team, the midfield

  19. I’m impressed by the ref – in position, no hesitation. Hell, half the time in MLS, you’re lucky to even see a yellow for a tackle like that.

Also, that *had* to hurt. Oof.

  20. All these injuries the team is suffering from you would think people are deliberately trying to hurt the players for the worldcup
