U.S. Open Cup: New York Red Bulls at Philadelphia Union (Match Night Commentary)

NY_Primary_COL UNI_Primary_COL

The New York-Philly Derby will play its second installment in four days tonight as the Red Bulls play host to the Union tonight in a U.S. Open Cup play-in match at Red Bull Arena.

Both teams are using tonight's match to play young players, so it's anybody's guess how the match will go. We will see a grand total of seven rookies and six 2010 draft picks take the field tonight.

I will be providing commentary throughout the match so please feel free to follow along here. As always, you are welcome to share your own thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action (Commentary is after the jump):

————————-

FINAL– The Red Bulls return to action on Saturday at RFK STadium, when they take on D.C. United.

That's all for me. Please feel free to share your post-match thoughts in the comments section below.

Good night.

————————-

FINAL- Red Bulls 2, Union 1. Rookie Conor Chinn scores both goals to send the Red Bulls into the next qualifying round of the U.S. Open Cup. The Red Bulls will now  face New England on May 12th.

Plenty of quality performances tonight. Chinn, Seth Stammler, Chris Albright, Tony Tchani to name a few.

I will look to pass on word on Sebastien LeToux's injury status as soon as it becomes available.

————————-

93rd minute– Getting down to the fourth and final minute of stoppage time. Still 2-1 Red Bulls.

————————-

90th minute– PHILLY JUST WIDE!!!!

————————-

85th minute- Union is playing with ten men because it used all its subs and LeToux is out injured.

————————-

84th minute– LeToux is being stretchered off. Not a good sign. That would be devastating for Philly if he was seriously hurt.

————————-

82nd minute– Sebastien LeToux is injured. He's being treated on the sideline.

Irving Garcia comes in for Sinisa Ubiparipovic.

————————-

81st minute– Tonight's attendance is 3,015. Some diehard fans braving a frigid night.

————————-

80th minute- Seth Stammler has also played very well tonight. Not sure he's ready to give up the starting job to Carl Robinson just yet.

————————-

79th minute– Chris Albright has been very solid tonight. He could definitely challenge for a starting role if he stays healthy.

————————-

70th minute– Amobi Okugo with the foul on Stammler for a free kick from far out, Da Luz takes it quickly.

————————-

69th minute– This match is shaping up to be like Saturday's meeting, with the Red Bulls leading 2-1 and Philadelphia pouring it on late.

————————-

67th minute- GOAL UNION!!!! Sebastien LeToux with the finish, off an Arrieta pass. It's 2-1 New York. Phill has a starting lineup in and smells blood.

————————-

64th minute– John Wolyniec comes in for Juan Agudelo and gets a loud cheer. Fans love him.

Sebastien LeToux comes in for McInerney. The Union have close to a full lineup, while the Red Bulls have all reserves in now.

————————-

58th minute– Austin Da Luz comes in for Brian Nielsen. Not a bad night for the Dane.

————————-

57th minute– Sutton gathers McInerney's kick cleanly.

————————-

56th minute– Union free kick.

————————-

55th minute– Chinn nearly gets his hat-trick, but Seitz gets a hand on the Ubiparipovic cross JUST in time. Red Bulls look good for a third goal at this rate.

————————-

49th minute– Stammler with a nice pass to Nielsen, who's cross leads to a blocked Agudelo shot for a corner.

————————-

46th minute– We're back and Chris Albright has come in for Carlos Mendes. Stefani Miglioranzi, Alejandro Moreno and Christian Arrieta come in for Nick Zimmerman, Roger Torres and Toni Stahl.

————————-

HALFTIME– The Red Bulls are dominating the midfield, and Chinn is the beneficiary, with two good finishes.

Red Bulls fans will be interested to know we could see Chris Albright in the second half. He hasn't played since 2008, but is considered a potential starter at right back if he can come back from ankle and knee injuries.

————————

HALFTIME– Red Bulls 2, Union 0. It's the Conor Chinn show, with the rookie scoring two goals tonight.

————————

45th minute– SAVE SUTTON, stops a Salinas shot after a nice run.

————————

45th minute– That said, I'd love to see Agudelo work his magic with the first team. He could be a second-half spark plug.

————————

44th minute– Agudelo gets caught dancing on the ball again. He's got talent, but is obviously still very raw.

————————

43rd minute– Chinn definitely hustles and has a nose for goal. He had a great pre-season and could be edging out veteran John Wolyniec in the pecking order.

————————

41st minute- GOAL RED BULLS!!! And it's Conor Chinn with his second goal, off a Sassano cross.

Red Bulls 2, Union 0. And sales of Star Kicks are going through the roof (okay, so maybe they don't make them anymore, but they should).

————————

39th minute– Seitz makes a routine save on a Stammler shot.

Red Bulls are actually the more creative and dangerous team tonight. A bit surprising given the lineups. The young kids are playing some soccer.

————————

38th minute– Tchani is laying off some beautiful passes. Someone should tell Nielsen he's allowed to cross the ball with his first touch though.

————————

35th minute– Still 1-0 to the Red Bulls. Apologies for the lag, the internet's a bit of a mess.

Philly isn't really putting much together, which is surpising considering Roger Torres is starting.

————————

31st minute– Interesting lineup for Philly, with Toni Stahl at right back, and Jacobson on the right wing.

Jacobson picked up a yellow card.

————————

30th minute– Agudelo definitely has some skill, but he can fall victim to trying to get too cute at times.

McInerney just shouldered Borman to the ground. Referee Andrew Chapin might be losing control a bit.

————————

29th minute– Some lively action, the game is starting to get chippy.

————————

23rd minute– We've got a lively, if small, crowd tonight. About 50 Union fans and several hundred members of the Empire Supporters Club. Looks like 2K-3K for tonight's match.

————————

20th minute– Tony Tchani looks dominant on the ball, but remember, these are mostly rookies and unused veterans. He looked dominant at the Combine as well. That said, he's got a great future.

————————

17th minute– Stammler's long-range shot is deflected to Chinn, who's initial shot was blocked. He pounces on the rebound for his first professional goal.

Juan Agudelo shows off some nice moves on the ball. The Red Bulls are taking control.

————————

15th minute– GOAL RED BULLS!!!!! And it's Conor Chinn with the finish, tapping in his own rebound off a Seitz save. Red Bulls 1, Union 0.

————————

10th minute– Tony Tchani with a nice pass to spring Nielsen, who looks good early.

————————-

6th minute– Nielsen with a dangerous cross in front of goal that nobody can head home for New York.

————————-

4th minute– Dan Califf has shaved off his mohawk. Was that part of the deal if he got a red card?

————————-

2nd Minute– Lots of players seeing their first action of the season. That includes Red Bulls centerbacks Andrew Boyens and Carlos Mendes, who must deal with quick forwards Danny Mwanga and Jack McInerney.

It's freezing here.

————————-

1st Minute– And we are off.

————————-

PRE-GAME– With all the rookies playing I feel like I'm at the MLS Combine. There were more fans at the Combine though.

————————-

  1. Congrats to the Red Bulls on a solid team effort. As good as Conor Chinn was, it seemed as if he missed his share of chances and could have had six goals on the night. Stammler and Borman had good matches but I was particularly impressed with Tchani who nearly executed some great through balls. Congrats to Luke on a great assist and for Ubi getting the ball to him. Glad to see da Luz and Garcia get some playing time as well.

Sutton played okay but needs to improve his distribution.

  2. disagree about Albright. if anything he looked a little shaky with some headers and touches that didn’t go far enough and so went to the other team

  3. Find a single US Open Cup PLAY IN match that had a larger crowd.

Late rounds, or big crowds when MLS teams play lower division teams, are not the same thing.

  4. My friends from Philadelphia, our “B” team beat your “A” team. You are terrible and your women are hideous.

You are a disgrace to calcio.

    Ciao!

  5. It’s about 50 degrees not exactly freezing.

(SBI-Actually, according to the Weather Channel it felt like 37 degrees, which is freezing when you don’t have a winter coat on.)

  6. I am very appreciative of the stream and although though are only a few in the crowd they are loud and passionate. Only complaint… Shep Messing. The other guy isn’t bad, but Messing… it’s just his voice, and well just about everything he says.

  7. You people are morons. US Open Cup game have never drawn anyone anywhere really (although I think that will slowly improve).
