The New York Red Bulls were always going to have a tough task in beating an improving and confident San Jose Earthquakes side on the road, but when fullback Luke Sassano delivered a clumsy studs-up tackle on Bobby Convey to earn an early red card, that task went from tough to impossible.

The Earthquakes made full use of the advantage, scoring just before halftime, and then throttling New York in the second half on their way toa 4-0 drubbing of the Eastern Conference leaders on Saturday night at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Here are the highlights:

What did you think of the match? Impressed with San Jose? Disappointed in the Red Bulls? Looking forward to the rematch at Red Bull Arena?

  1. At 5-2 WE need to take into consideration any future injuries and having 15 points early allows Hans to do that. WE WE WE WE should support some changes to the line-up away and should expect nothing but the best 11 at home.

  2. I am not stressing this result whats so ever….. MLS is a great league because any given saturday a team could win…. it just so happens that it has been any given saturday for us 5 out of 7 times

  3. Let me get this straight… they call that Buckshaw Arena? How many balls ended up in the parking lot? Doesn’t an arena have to have a roof or walls? Lame. San Jose better keep winning or they’ll end up playing their matches in a parking lot.

The Red Bulls did dominate and were putting plenty of pressure on in the first half. They would of eventually won 2-1 if it weren’t for the red card. And yes Ream was off but he wasn’t exactly getting help from the midfield. He’s and excellent player and a ROOKIE. Where was Terry playing his rookie season?

I think the Red Bulls are still coming together under Backe, who is doing a great job, and if the rumor is true, we’ll have an international star putting lots of balls in nets for the Bulls in July.

  4. It’s gut-check time for RBNY this week, with two home games. It’s a critical time, when they can answer the doubters and show the home fans that they’re for real. Poor results will plant some seeds of doubt in the stands and in the clubhouse, I fear.

  5. Definate straight red for that tackle. What was Sassano thinking? Maybe Backe thought Sassano would put in an inspired performance because he was playing in front of family and friends. Jemremy Hall was playing OK and the team was winning. Definately a JCO move! Why try to fix what ain’t broken?

San Jose fans should not kid themselves about the result. The red card twelve minutes in doomed the Red Bulls and their collective heads dropped immediately.

  6. How anyone can say that the Eduardo-esque tackle was not a red card is not paying attention enough. Like “HopeRooneys…” said, Convey could’ve easily broken his leg off of the dangerous studs up tackle. Red card no doubt.

While the red card obviously helped, the Quakes still dominated the match. Check the post game quotes, NYRB coaching staff said that it seemed like it was 11v7 (or 11v8) at times. The Red Bulls were dominated hand down. Do the Quakes deserve #3 on ESPN’s power rankings? That’s a bit much and I don’t agree, but we are definately not some “barometer” team that can’t play

  7. i was at the game.

the Quakes look like they’re back in 2003 form, and the stadium was as full as ive seen since then (Spartan Stadium back then). still, the field appears a bit tight (needs to be a bit wider). that’s y it seemed easier to play 1 man down yet still cover much of the field.

the 1-touch passing was solid! convey is in great form, and corrales kept his own. JPA is sorely lackin in speed (his age no doubt) but his touch is still sweet. i was disappointed in him, didnt seem to have the zeal for goal like ive seen in this Colombiano before. maybe its been a long road trip?

well i cant wait to see the NEW RED BULLS ARENA Saturday! im off to visit NYC baby!
