The Europa League Final kicks off today with Fulham taking on Atletico Madrid in Hamburg, Germany.

Fulham is looking to cap a dream run through the tournament with one more victory, while Atletico looks to add a trophy before seeing its top player sold off this summer.

U.S. national team midfielder Clint Dempsey is starting today's final on the bench for Fulham, but he is a good bet to come in as a substitute.

  1. You show me a USA player who has scored goals similar to Dempsey’s against Juventus and Stoke City and then I’ll shut it.

  2. It’s all about peace and love in MY Fulham camp. There’s room for everyone…

    …except Arsenal fans. 😉

    COYW, there’s always next…oh, I guess not.

  3. I’ll bite this sour apple. I don’t care about Fulham one bit. I have no connection to Fulham or London or England. I come to this website for insight into US Men’s National Team news and players. Do I care that Fulham lost? No, I won’t be bothered by it. Do I care that Dempsey lost? Yes, I empathize with him because he is a great player on my national team and I support him.

If you don’t rate Dempsey, fine. That’s your right to have an opinion, but people on here will likely disagree no matter how many times you call them fanboys.

  4. Don’t forget the Texas Board of Education.

    Paraphrase:

“We should eliminate Archbishop Oscar Romero from the curriculum becuase he is not well known.”

That said, we’ve got plenty of kooks and loons here in VA.

  5. Hey Pete. Relax. In my opinion a lot of US fans (myself included) would probably not be Fulham fans if American players were no on the squad. I like teams for different reasons. Sometimes because of the players, sometimes because of their style, sometimes I just like their uniforms. Does it really matter?

  6. For club and country if Dad stays coach I would opt for Bradley juniors position. I agree Dempsey is in a good position but the club gets an offer from a bigger club and he can get a pay raise he should take it. If he plays well in the World Cup he might be a transfer target.

  7. Why do people want Dempsey to leave from Fulham? He gets to play in the best league in the world on a competitive team, he gets consistent playing time, he has a fanbase that supports him. There is not an American player is in a better situation(with the exception of some of our goalies)

  8. that’s the spirit… glad Fulham didn’t believe in themselves this time around. It’s not like they made it to a final they weren’t suppose to this time.

  9. I hope you can include me in your club. I started following Fulham when I learned that McBride and Boca played for them. Then Dempsey and, nominally Johnson came.

For a relative EPL noob, are we allowed to choose the team that we want when we start paying attention?

    Is that OK with you?

For that matter, I became a 49er in 1981-2 when they won their first SuperBowl. Does that make me a fair weather fan? I was ten. Is that old enough to not have known better?

I’ll also probably be a fan of whatever team Donovan joins as well. I like M’Gladbach, Rangers until lately, and recently Bolton and Everton.

Is that ok? Do I have your permission to continue to like the same team as you?

  10. Now Clint will be hungry for Copa Mundial. I hope he doesn’t play for Fulham next year so that purist Fulham fans like Pete won’t have any fair weather American fans to ridicule.

  11. Still, Fulham actually had to qualify for this tournament in July 09 so regardless it’s still an impressive feat. The good news is that Dempsey did well, was aggressive, and is did not suffer an injury. I’m sure if he gets snubbed at fulham (as always happens in one way or another. e.g. scores against L’pool to save them from relegation, next season starts on the bench until Hodgson comes along later) he’ll go to a better side.

  12. Yes, but hopefully with Manchester United after the World Cup because he’s not getting close with the USMNT or Fulham

  13. Thats what you get for leaving one of your best attacking playmakers on the bench for most of the game Hodgson.
