Eddie Johnson suffered what appears to be a hamstring injury in Aris Salonika's Greek play-off with AEK Athens on Wednesday. The injury, which Johnson picked up in the 42nd minute, comes just one day after he was announced to the preliminary 30-man U.S. World Cup roster.

(UPDATE-According to Johnson's representantive, Johnson suffered a mild hamstring tweak and was removed from the match for precautionary reasons. He is expected to be back for Aris' next match.)

  1. M.Hoyos was seeing significant playing time off the bench and as a starter before he was called to the Arg. U20 which I’m not sure if he also declined (he declined the USA U20 camp)after the article of M.Hoyos still talking to USA U20 coach he now gets very little playing time. Not sure what is going on.

  2. Andy in Atlanta you bring up many good points but are mistaken about Davies. If I recall correctly ( I took ginco this morning) Davies scored a brace off the bench in his second or third game with Sochaux and than become an automatic starter for the team.

Johnson has def improved and I actually wanna see him make the roster and play aswell as he has…….. Johnson could def be a great late game sub no doubt about….. Johnson against a tired defense is most def a mismatch

  3. Yes..you are right I don’t fact check… how about you guys have your heads in sand… Eddie played very well at the end of the year for Cardiff… had a great pre-season with Fulham where many thought he might get a few run-outs… as you can see with Fulham making the Europa Final…they were too quality for him to get into the side…he has gone to Aris and scored goals and contributed to one of Aris FC better seasons… He has learned not to stray off-side during slower build-up. He has learned to run and shut down defenders when in possession making it easier for his MFs… He has scored a few nice header goals recently which was never a strong suit…

you guys all think because a guy does not stick in 15 goals that he is not developing… news flash… Charlies Davies did not score at all for Sochaux… He scored at a about the same clip as Eddie this past 6 months when he was in Sweden…

The FACT is you don’t even watch him play for 2 years but claim to know everything there is to know about him…that is what I am referring to…

  5. Granted that it’s just MLS, however Buddle and Donovan are like p-nut butter and jelly these days..These two are inseparable on the pitch and could be just the hot ticket that the MNT need. They have been so hot connected that it’s almost sick!

  6. “Just watch Donovan,” Bradley told his players. “Contesting for 50-50 balls is for guys who want to carry the piano, not for guys who want to play the piano.”

  7. I think 8 goals in first 8 international appearances (or whatever it was) is pretty wow. He may have trailed off a bit since then though.

  8. True but what teenager would turn down a world cup call up? Based on past experiences I wouldnt mind capping hoyos just to get him tied.

  9. It could be worse they could be playing for a shot at the NBA finals. The NBA is so drawn out and there’s so much time between playoff games that even fans forget their favorite teams season is still going. Talk about money grubbing…

  10. Jesus, how long are these Greek playoffs? I know absolutely nothing about the Greek league, but I feel like every time I read about Adu or Johnson they are in a “play-off” match. Are they playing for the Stanley Cup?

  11. I saw him vs. the Dutch in March and he did the same thing he has done for the past few years: run onto a ball, hold it up, turn away from the goal, and look to play it back. That’s fine sometimes, but the guy has shown no killer instinct for the US in a few years. Now I haven’t seen his recent games in Greece so maybe he’s different now. In ’06 I was all about EJ and I thought Arena should have used him more. He had confidence and used his speed well. Since then, I don’t know what’s happened. I hope you’re right and he proves me wrong, because we need help up front…

  12. This just in: Bob Bradley has asked all the strikers on the 30 man roster to wrap themselves up in a thick layer of bubble wrap. He told Jozy Altidore to make it a double layer. When asked about his midfielders he told them to be cautious and the defenders and goalies to carry on as usual.

  13. According to FIFA’s World Cup rules:

    6. A player listed on the final list may only be replaced in the event of serious
injury up until 24 hours before the kick-off of his team’s first match. The
replacement players do not need to be limited to the release list of 30 players.
Such replacements must be approved in writing by the FIFA Medical Committee
upon receipt and acceptance of a detailed medical assessment in one of the
four offi cial FIFA languages. The FIFA Medical Committee will approve the
request if the injury is sufficiently serious to prevent the player from taking part
in the competition. The participating member association shall inform FIFA
accordingly of the player’s full details (cf. art. 26, par. 4) at the same time as
when submitting the request to replace the injured player.

  14. All of this vs 5’9 Concacaf players.

Johnson is proving himself right now in Europe. Ching never has.

Besides, Dempsey can playup top and is better at the things Ching does anyway.

  15. I think Bradley can have success playing an extremely defensive counter-attacking 4-4-1-1 with FREDDY ADU & JOZY ALTIDORE up top. They have a history of good chemistry, and I think Adu infact compliments Altidore’s qualities better than any of our other strikers.

  16. No duh?

But Buddle and Gomez are on more torrid form than Johnson ever enjoyed, arguably, and have been consistently exceptional in MLS and the Mexican league. When did Johnson ever wow anybody on the international stage? (No, he hasn’t wowed in Greece, either, which is nothing more than an effort to kick start a Real international career).

Look, no one can replace Charlie, we need someone who’s a decent athlete who can Finish. That’s about it. In 2002, Nobody was proven internationally.

  17. Some of our Buddle and Gomez boosters are gonna be so disappointed in a few weeks when neither show much during the friendlies. It’s a huge leap from league to international. It takes time to make the adjustment, lots of time. It is amazing how much the EJ haters come out. No matter what happens to him, Buddle and Gomez are going to have to prove that what we’ve seen and heard from them lately is not just a mirage.
