Major League Soccer has suspended Columbus Crew star Guillermo Barros Schelotto for one match for throwing an elbow and hitting Chivas USA defender Michael Umana during the Crew's 1-0 win last Saturday.
Schelotto will miss the Crew's match against the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena on Thursday night after the league ruled on Tuesday on the incident, which was missed by the match referee. Here is the video of the incident.
Columbus will now be without Schelotto as well as starters Robbie Rogers and Chad Marshall (both with the U.S. national team) heading into Thursday night's Eastern Conference showdown.

It’s hard to tell from the video but Schelotto actually hit Umana in the vagina.
the elbow was obviously brought up toward the face, and back down fast so it would be hard to catch. nothing fishy about the suspension.
if the ref saw it, that intentional elbow would have been a red card and would have been a 3 game suspension. so consider yourself lucky.
Shows the piece of crap refs we have in the MLS. Not one of the 4 saw that? What a joke.
BTW @ NYRBs sucks: Fishy? Where have you been watching soccer? Blatant elbow away from the ball he’s lucky he doesn’t get a 2 game ban.
I’ve always thought GBS was a dirty player and it does look like he takes an intentional shot at the defender who is just holding his ground but it was not that bad and I have to agree with ‘NYRBs Suck’ that this looks fishy and I am begining to think based on league decisions and reffing this year that MLS wants NY and LA in the final and will do anything to get them there.
I find this a bit fishy. As if MLS is trying to fix matches and insure RB wins or is higher in the Table.
I’m suprised that Schellotto has never argued with the ref to give the wind a red card. Karma’s a bitch!
y’all do remember that Columbus was didn’t lose any of the regular-season games that Schelotto missed last year, right?
He was gone from about mid-July to late August, and The Crew won every game that he missed. They lost to RBNY in his (cameo) return on 30 August.
I wouldn’t sweat it.
I think a huge win over a quality opponent is a bit of a stretch for Red Bulls. They should be able to squeak one out however.
I smell a huge win for the Red Bulls. The Red Bulls don’t have any players missing for international duty. The midfield will be very weak for the Crew. I don’t think it will be exactly a field day for the Red Bulls because the Crew still features players such as Gaven, but I do think the Red Bulls will enjoy a majority of the possession.
This is non sense. that elbow was nothing to cry about. Umana reacted like a rubbish donut.
So does this mean Renteria or possible Herrera gets the nod then?
That was a miraculous recovery! Didn’t even need the stretcher to come out or any magic spray.
weak sauce
What a picture. If it was an intentional elbow, why only one game suspension? Should be a minimum of 3 in my tiny opinion.
The suspension of GBS is weak sauce. However, with a game on Sunday he may have had limited minutes in one of these two games anyways. I guess this means the return of the BASH BROTHERS: Lenhart and Garey up top!
When is MLS going to suspend Espinoza for trying to decapitate Nyarko?
You can see the video on the mlssoccer.com video page. Typical jostling for position. Elbow went up and they started crying the ref. I don’t think it was necessarily wrong to suspend him, but this post and picture make it seem much worse than it was. Umana should have been given a red card earlier in the game.
Crew haven’t really played well despite the wins. Some new starters may actually help.
(in a samuel L. jackson voice) “yea i elbowed him, and i hope he burns in hell!!”
Thanks Ives, just benched him on my MFLS team.
so does the mls take mug shots for supensions now?
What do i think ? its a gift from God, Redbull has so many games this month alone, they need a break. those players must be tired .
This is a bunch of garbage. He elbowed Schelloto in the back of the head earlier in the game and got a yellow… not a suspension. This is going to be a weird game. Lots of injuries on the Red Bull side, just read the league injury report and it says Hesmer might miss the game too. I still see C-bus winning.
The photographer probably should have used the spanish equivalent of “Say cheese.”
Seriously, when I first saw that photo load I thought he had been arrested for something terrible. Which would have been funny since he is wearing his jersey.
Haha at first glance, with that mug shot and that title, I thought he had been suspended for the season or something…
video of elbow?
I was just going to say that looks like a mug shot. Was he suspended for previous criminal history i.e. falling over with nobody near him?
Did this kind of post-match suspension happen much last season? I don’t remember it . . . am I forgetful, or is it a new development in officiating?
While it would be nice to play a full-squad Cbus, I’ll take what I can get.:)
Guilty as charged.
I must say – that’s quite the mug shot.
I think it means this “Eastern Conference showdown” will tell us absolutely nothing about which of the two is the better team…
