Montero’s late winner topples Red Bulls

The New York Red Bulls and Seattle Sounders were locked in an even match that saw few chances between either side on Saturday, but Fredy Montero came off the bench to remind us why he's one of the most dangerous strikers in Major League Soccer.

Montero's 85th-minute strike helped give the Sounders a 1-0 victory on Saturday night, snapping a four-match winless streak and handing New York its first loss at Red Bull Arena.

Montero had been benched after a long stretch of ineffectiveness, but came off the bench and made the Red Bulls pay, beating Mike Petke after collecting a long Brad Evans pass before sliding a shot underneath Bouna Coundoul.

The loss drops the Red Bulls to 5-3 just five days before a battle with fellow Eastern Conference leader Columbus on Thursday.

  1. pretty even game, we (sounders) deserved the win, not because we had more shots, etc, but we went cross country to shutout the top team in the east at their new stadium, giving them their 1st loss there…i for one was waiting for us to f something up, thank gawd it was the RB CB that shat the bed covering fredy.

  2. Sorry, sloppy writing on my part. The tons of chances bit was meant to reflect the trend of the season, not this specific game.

But even if we take your subjective stats on meaningful chances (which I am ok with – sorry Ives) that means Seattle had 3 times as many chances as NYRB… how is that not dominating, controlling, or ‘took it to them’?

I am not heralding this as a steam-rolling win (we got to see what that looked like from the pavements’ view last week), but I find it a little strange that there is such objection to the idea that Seattle controlled the game but had trouble finishing.

  3. Agreed on the salad bit… right now we are dependent on finishing the chances we create through craft and running, which is why having to rely on either Evans who runs but finishes like a central mid, or Montero who often does not run has not been producing a ton of goals.

And if Nkufo is as good as he looks, oh hell yeah I want to see him.

Congrats to NYRB on Henry by the way. Lets hope he brings the work rate.

  4. If Seattle fans are seemingly content with poor chances on goal, then they are fools. The sounders are currently all salad. Don’t get me wrong it’s a nice arugala salad with capers and hearts of palm, but there is no steak on the plate. However, the steak is at the window, in the form of Nkufo and the Red Bulls just got some costco-sized salad fixings in the form of Henry.

“Waiter? I’ll have the steak Nkufo.”
