Herculez Gomez is currently in the midst of trying to play his way onto the U.S. World Cup team as he takes part in the national team pre-World Cup training camp, but he was also looking for a new club after playing out his contract with Puebla.

The search for a new club didn't last long.

Pachuca has signed Gomez, announcing the signing on its website late on Friday.

Gomez scored 10 goals for Puebla last season, earning a share of the Mexican League scoring title. His surprising success came after he left Major League Soccer club Kansas City on a free transfer. He signed a half-season contract with Puebla and made the most of the opportunity, recapturing the scoring touch he displayed when he helped the Los Angeles Galaxy win the 2005 MLS Cup Final.

Gomez will join U.S. national team midfielder Jose Francisco Torres on Pachuca, a perennial power in Mexico that will be playing in the Club World Championships later this year.

What do you think of Gomez joining Pachuca? Hoping he makes the World Cup team?

  1. I agree with the assessment of Ching being on the team because (unfortunately) he seems to be the only American striker who seems to understand how to and somewhat be able to hold up the ball and dish off to the other striker making a run. Jozy has been working on this but he still isn’t there and I really don’t know that this is his game. My problem with Ching is that he is getting old, is slow, always seems to be injured and doesn’t seem to be able to perform when he plays top opponents. I would much rather see Gomez and Buddle with Dempsey or Landon providing cover if need be. That said, I fully expect to see Ching on the squad – along with Bornstein(conversation for another day)

  2. Mexico is comparable to Russia and Holland. As in a pretty good league. We’re decent at best comparable with the likes of Scandinavian leagues and Belgium. Even the Greek league might be better but in 10years we’ll see very much more improvement. patience.

i wonder how fatter his paycheck has gotten.

  3. Did any MLS clubs make a move for Gomez? I would have thought his stock would be on the upswing. Oh well. Mexico is a decent league and I like the prospect of two Nats getting more conditioning in the rank Mexican air.

  4. Pachuca’s a fun team to watch. just to follow El Gringo is fun, and now Hercules too, but they have Manso, Alvarez, Cvitanich, big Calero in goal, and more…it’s usually entertaining.

    great for Gomez!

  5. Brian Ching isnt on the squad to “wow.” hes on the squad because he plays within the system, providing a release option further up the field with his hold up play, drawing fouls, etc. Additionally, when has Gomez or Buddle wowed anyone internationally? I hope they both do well in camp, I hope they are able to provide an option up top that the MNT could sorely use, but lets be careful with the insinuations of incompetence hurled BB’s way.

  6. I think EJ is actually the favorite among him, Buddle, and Herc. He’s probably the most complete player among them (pace, heading ability, build up play), has the most familiarity with Bradley’s system, and is playing in the most competitive league (at least arguably).

  7. Pachuca might be turning in to the FULHAM of Mexico…hehehe…great stuff. They also signed Braulio Luna who without a doubt continues to play impressively despite his age. Many think he should had been on the plan to South Africa with the Mexican National team. I think it worked out for the best. The other options were America and Cruz Azul, both which its harder to succeed in and teams that are under a lot of pressure to succeed.

  8. YES! good on ya Herc. after watching some of his highlights with Puebla, i’d say he’s definitely earned a spot at the WC camp and the Pachuca contract. i’m really hoping we can see him and Jozy up top for at least a half against Czech Rep. or (even better for Herc) against Turkey.

  9. Glad to see him latch on with one of the traditional powers down South. He definitely earned this and I wish him well.

  10. be positive….you really should take into account that Ching is a liability and been injured. BB will take the forwards that show the best in camp and against the czech team

  12. Good for him. He is 28 so time is getting short. As far as the WC I think both Hercules and Edson make it. I see Findley and EJ on the outs.

  13. Herculues Gomez and Edson Buddle should both make the world cup squad but they won’t. Brian Ching will somehow find his way on the squad because of his “experience.” Last time I checked Brian Ching never wowed anyone on an international level.

  14. I have to admit I was not the biggest H. Gomez fan when he was in MLS. However, after watching highlights of his goals in this current run of form, I am appreciating what he brings to the table more and more. I guess this just goes to show what the right system does for a player.

Pachuca just became my favoite Mexican league team as well since reading this. JFT is an unbelievely talented player and a great option to pair with Michael Bradley in the middle. And although I don’t really cheer/support the Mexican soccer, I’ll be watching my Yanks tear it up on Telemundo and FSC.

    Congrats Herc!

  15. Well, I can’t really account for his football technique, but Gomez must have a set of powerful lungs to be able to blow that ball up and down the field. 😉

  16. so true. However, doesnt Fulham still technically have E Johnson? He’s on loan to greece, but shouldn’t be back, no?

  17. Regardless of the money he’s gonna make or the team he’s going too, what about the experience he’s gained in that league? I’d bet my left nut that he can run circles around Buddle and will make the WC team.

  19. Good move for Herc. Hopefully his goal scoring ways transfer over to Pachuca. And a little off topic but isn’t JFT’s brother supposed to be pretty good?

  20. Wasn’t Gomez a long shot to even go pro in MLS. I remember when he had his break out season with LA, there were stories about his “unique” journey to professional soccer. Now he signs a contract with the best club in Mexico! Isn’t there a movie called “Goal” about that story…
