The Red Bulls pulled out a commanding 3-1 victory over Juventus behind three second half goals by Jeremy Hall, Conor Chinn and Juan Pablo Angel.

The Red Bulls starting XI was most of the reserve team that has been playing US Open Cup matches. And once again this "other squad" showed it can get results. Although Juventus had a shorthanded team due to the World Cup, it still boasted many stars including Alessandro Del Piero and Diego.

"They played with, in the first half or first 60 minutes, at least four or five high profile players, world class players," said head coach Hans Backe. "And they don't like to lose."

These stars would shine in the first half, especially Diego. The Brazilian midfielder controlled the pace of the entire first half orchestrating the Juve attack. Under Diego's command, the Italian side held the possession advantage in the first 45. Del Piero and Jonathan Zebina created fits for Hall and Danliegh Borman on the left side. But ultimately the Italian side couldn't take advantage on the score sheet.

The second half would begin with Roy Miller at left back and the Juventus attack was not the same. Miller held his own on the left side and allowed Hall to play more offensively.  And Hall did just that, putting the Red Bulls up in the 50th minute. The University of Maryland product half-volleyed home a rebound off a rocket shot by Irving Garcia.

"Irving had a great shot, hit the crossbar," said Hall. "We've been talking about getting in the box when the ball's on the opposite side, the outside midfielder has to get into the box and just be ready for it."

"I saw a guy coming at me, so I just hit hard and low and it went in."

The second goal came just five minutes later. Roy Miller streaking down the wing past Zebina, found a wide open Conor Chinn with a beautiful cross. Chinn would calmly take the ball down and hammer it home for the 2-0 lead.

"The wings crossed the ball back post, and Roy did a gret job, and luckily I was there," said Chinn. "I felt like I was able to put my chance away, so it was good."

Juan Pablo Angel came in with Dane Richards in the 68th minute and seven minutes later the two combined to put the icing on the cake. Richards found Angel who put the Red Bulls up three with a touch of class past Juventus keeper Alex Manninger.

Amauri ruined the clean sheet for keeper Greg Sutton in the 90th minute, but overall the Red Bulls played well enough to get a win over a quality Juventus side.

"The Red Bulls definitely played a great game, but we are disappointed with the result," said Juventus forward Alessandro Del Piero. "As time went on we started feeling tired from the long trip and the entire season."

This Red Bulls reserves continue to show their own quality and composure with their 3rd straight victory (including the two USOC matches). And some of these reserve players are pushing Backe to see some time in regular MLS matches.

One of those players is Irving Garcia, who could have been the man of the match despite not finding his name on the score sheet. He had two rocket shots and was fearless against a great defender in Fabio Grosso.

"He was a little nervous in the beginning as a draft pick, and just played safe," said Backe. "But the way he played today, to take players on, he gave me something to think about, that's for sure."

Garcia and the rest of the second squad will have a USOC against the Rapids on Wednesday to build on this performance and to show that they may be worthy of seeing regular MLS time. But for now, Backe will continue to use these younger players as he has been, but he has been encouraged with their progress.

"They need time, they have a lot to learn, but still I can say that the depth is good in our squad"

  1. Never fails. There will always be some b*t*chin about the attendence. Seems like you are all forgeting where this TEAM is coming from. Maybe you envision 80,000. Would that be good enuff? Think of where soccer is coming from. Think of what the NHL, NBA did in attendance. At least Soccer is finally a part of the sports conversation. stop the attentance bitchyin already. You sound like a religious fanatics, you know the ones who turn people off? 15 yrs of not always great display of the beautiful game. It’s not the NFL or MLB & be thankful it’s not the Arena league.

  2. I dont care how others viewed this win. If a top tier club that featured a good amount of decent players cannot get a competitive showing against an MLS reserve squad, then can there should be no excuse. Once Hall, Tchani, Sinisa and Garcia controlled the midfield after the first 25 minutes or so, this match was either gonna be scoreless or red bulls victory. For God’s sake, the offensive trio of Del Piero, Trezeguet, and Diego (tired or not) should have been more than enough for an MLS reserve squad that doesnt even play in a reserve league

  3. Shame for you all who think that Juve players had nothing to play for in this friendly. In a competetive friendly Juve players had the chance to show their new coach f they

  5. MLS does not deserve respect. Its obvious, with rumors of incoming world class players surrounding the Red Bulls, and questions as to whether they are trying to redo the Cosmos era, that Red Bulls players are simply more interested in playing international games then domestic ones. If they were in Copa Sudamericana, that would be very fitting, and they would most certainly clean up. Too bad, they’ll go back to sluggish play in MLS. Red Bulls do deserve more then MLS.

  6. your hilarious!

    1. Im positive NY offered them more than West Ham and the British media is hyping up the amount of money because they think NY is barely offering anything(you know, the usual underestimation from europe at the US)

    2. Henry WOULD NEVER disgrace his Arsenal name by going to a London rival club

    3. He has pretty much said the only place he wants to go is NY

    4. Barcelona revealed that they are figuring out the correct deal for Henry to leave for NY

    5. the west ham rumor is just that….A RUMOR

  8. Its more alarming about the mls games. Only 2 games have been over 16K. The opening and the philly game with Sons of Ben. I think its just expected that people will come to the games with a nice stadium with amenities. Public Transportation and all, more people should come. The Washington Nationals sold out more with a new stadium and a terrible team in their new stadium. Maybe a bad example, but for all the hype from Red Bull fans and ownership, it hasnt lived up to the hype. They have a small but loyal supporter group. But 24.5 K for a Houston DC United game in Houston. And New York cant pull that off. You see why people question attendance. Oh and FC Dallas situation is just poor planning.

  9. If you really need ” SPECIFICS”, then I KNOW, you know nothing about this game. This isn’t about a lack of defending or bad tactics, this is about JUVENTUS and ny. This is about a 14 year old club and ” La Vecchia Signora”. If NY beat Barcelona, and miss the playoffs, how much would that win mean???

Yeah, I think you know the answer.

  10. Patrick below just did exactly what you were incapable of doing. The best your brain can conjure is “this week, it means nothing,” despite the fact that I’d asked multiple times for actual in-game specifics.

    Patrick = good reading comprehension.

  11. up in flames? who the eff would show up to see the red bulls?

i’m also a half-season tix holder but gimme a break on filling the stadium for a crap friendly vs juve. who gives a crap? plenty of fanboys were there and that’s who rb should focus on. not me. i already go to the season matches. thank you very much.

This is exactly what I was looking for, thank you.

And, no, I wasn’t “looking for an argument.” I was looking for an answer.

  13. youre just looking for an argument, but here are some specifics in differences between a meaningless friendly and a serie A game: Making the safe square or back pass instead of turning and looking up field, neglecting defensive responsibilities because the outcome doesnt matter, not making runs you could, lazy passes, not tracking balls down, not crashing the goal, not showing for teammates under pressure, massive amounts of substitutions and thus interfering with a teams flow, lack of mental focus, eyes on other things ie) new contracts, weddings, vacations yada yada. If you’d like more, just let me know, but that should answer your question

  14. I don’t think you know this sport very well. these guys aren’t robots, they’re human, they get tired. You know what the difference between a match this week and last week is, last week a match would’ve counted for 3 points, this week, it means nothing. The end.

  15. So the trialist playing for a contract what are they doing? Because all they showd to me the trialist that is, is that there is a huge drop off from the 1st team to the guys that make the bench, these were MLS reserves, they lost to. Our league is looking up!

  16. Mixed. I agree they should come close to selling a Juve game out, but it is still pretty remarkable that just shy of 19,000 showed up at 1pm on a Sunday afternoon for a totally meaningless game between the second stringers for the Red Bulls and a depleted Juve side coming off a 7th place finish in Italy. I can’t think of another sport in the U.S. that would draw that kind of attendance under comparable circumstances. Many MLB, NBA, and NHL teams play real games and don’t get 19,000.

  17. Same here. Way too high an asking price for a friendly, and without a guarantee we would see any of Juve’s first team (though we did). The markup on my seats was more than triple.

  18. “Do you really think these guys are gonna come to this match against the red bulls and give it their all”

Those still aren’t specifics. I’m asking for game-level stuff: What, exactly, does or doesn’t take place in a friendly like today’s, compared to a Juventus match that took place, say, a week ago? When a player doesn’t “give it their all,” what do you think that entails, exactly? They don’t run as hard? Is that it? Anything else?

I mean, you’ve laid out a backdrop — long disappointing season, etc. — but that still doesn’t address what is actually different within the match itself.

  19. You want specifics, here’s some. A 38+ match season, a dissapointing season with no throphies, major changes coming in the offseason. Do you really think these guys are gonna come to this match against the red bulls and give it their all, i don’t think so. Again, I think the red bulls put on an impressive performance, i’m not taking anything away from them, but this would’ve been a much more impressive win in January.

  20. Plain and simple this game was way overpriced. I’m a season ticket holder, I’ve been to every MLS and Open Cup game this season, but I’m not shelling out double the normal price of my seat to see a friendly.

  21. Juve’s big names looked like they ran of of gas in about the 38th mintue or so and their second half subs couldn’t seem to get an act together. Credit goes to the Red Bulls for playing hard all over the field the entire game. Garcia looks like the real deal — that shot he clocked off the cross bar and led to the goal was a real stunner.

  22. Where were you Andy? I’m a Red Bulls season ticket holder but didn’t go. Meaningless friendlies in the middle of a season don’t interest me.

I think you’ve misunderstood my post.

  24. they do get 18k for MLS games…..your pathetic

Its a friendly…..just because precious Juve is there doesnt mean its worth it to spend money on tickets

if you want to complain about attendance post rants when you see news on anything FC Dallas, now thats pathetic!

  25. this isnt a good argument you set out….I agree, but what your point should have been was that Juve had several world class players in Trez, Del Piero, Amauri, and Diego out there. If they come back and say that they dont try there hardest. You come back and say they dont get to this stage by not trying. They are professionals and they try as hard as they can whenever they can. NY also showed that they can play. Just look at the strike from Garcia, the cross from Miller, and many other plays and you will see that maybe MLS does reserve some respect afterall.

  26. Attendance reported 18,000.

Pathetic. PATHETIC. New stadium, a winning team, one of the most famous clubs and they can’t get a full house? 18,000 should be RBNY attendance for an average MLS game, not for what should be a high drawing friendly.

  27. Yep — it’ll be the same set of excuses and rationalizations that always get trotted out every time an MLS team beats a European side.

To the people who always throw these excuses around, I’m just curious: What exactly do you think these teams do or don’t do in these friendlies compared to a “normal” match? Besides playing not to get hurt — which BOTH teams will typically do in a friendly — what is it that’s so drastically different?

    I want specifics.

  28. Juventus was just going through the motions, they could care less about this match. For the red bulls this might be a big deal, but for Juve this was just a scrimmage. Expect big changes at Juventus this offseason. Good job red bulls, now back to reality.

  29. Entertaining game. Obviously Juve lost because this is a friendly and nobody cares about friendlies right?!? Tell that to any MLS team playing a USL or college team in the offseason. An MLS coach would be fine with players dogging it in offseason play right?!? Nope, not buying It. Especially for this Juve team which is going through massive changes this offseason. Any opportunity to show they deserve to stay is vital for each and every player. This day RBNY was the better team. Good on ya from an RSL fan.
