Surprises abound in MLS mid-week action

DC United Celebrates (TonyQuinnISI)

D.C. United and FC Dallas won matches, Chivas USA registered a blowout and Edson Buddle didn't score. Any of these events on their own might have come as a surprise, but having all of them take place in last night's MLS action tells you just how unpreditable MLS can be.

Here is a rundown of last night's scores:

D.C. United 2, Kansas City Wizards 1

Aussie striker Danny Allsopp showed us why D.C. brought him to replace Luciano Emilio. Also, Bill Hamid showed us glimpses of being a future star.

Chivas USA 4, New England Revolution 0

A Marko Perovic red card paved the way for Chivas USA to roll all over the short-handed and depleted Revs

Houston Dynamo 0, FC Dallas 1

FC Dallas defense shuts down the same Dynamo attack that looked so good last weekend.

Colorado Rapids 0, Los Angeles Galaxy 1

Edson Buddle didn't score, but assist machine Landon Donovan sets up Alan Gordon's first goal of the season.

  1. If Galaxy win at Qwest on Saturday, Sounders could be at bottom of table. Three Sounder commentators on their Round Table video have sort of given up, and are waiting for Godot, and N’Kufo.

  2. LOL. that’s like saying you are interested in a terrorist plot instead of a terraced plot (to keep the tier image going). but Nichol can’t leave–his english Harry Potter magic and Shalrie Joseph (hey, wait….) are the only things keeping NE from bottom-feederism

  3. The red card was bad enough, but Landin sticking his leg into Dax McCarty’s and then acting like McCarty fouled him hard was awful. What a fraud.

you’re right, i can predict LA getting another road win this week.

  5. Not too mention that they are starting two rookies at central mid. It probably helps that the two of them played together for 3 years already, but the Zemanski/Gavin experiment seems to be going well.

  6. That red car was pretty weak by the way. I’m saying that was a bad call. Really changed the game. Great finishing by Chivas USA however.

  7. Agreed. Pull the trigger Edson. I’m still not sure he’s ready for the WC. There’s no way he starts v ENG. Jozy is 10x better and Clint we be up top next to him.

Rooting for you Edson. GO YANKS!

  8. When is Dallas gonna sign a DP? I’ve heard a rumor that Clint Dempsey is coming back to his home state to play for FCD after the WC is over. There’s your goal scorer. … Ok just kidding on that one.

Dallas did score with only 10 players after a red card and still shut out ‘mighty’ Houston haha. Houston is a great squad and I hope Ching and Cameron get healty soon. The league is better when Houston is in the mix.

    Go Dallas

  9. What I learned from the mls games last night were.
    1) the Sacha of old looks to be back.
    2) Brek Shea has a ton of talent if only it was displayed more consistently
    3) Heath Pearce is solid

  10. Nicol keeps them in contention by drafting well, developing talent, and not spending stupidly on anyone – the nerve! The Revs spend up to the cap limit like everyone else. They just don’t do anything stupid like give DP money to Davino, or Denilson, or Landin.

  11. Badr is at Porto and I dont think this is a fair comparison because if Im not mistaken Hamid is not eligible for the actual U20 world cup team and therefore is not being called in because Rongen is only calling in guys who will be eligible in the upcoming cup. Hamid is in that awkward year where he was too young for the previous U20 and too old for the following. I really wish someone would do a story of this phenomon about the Youth cups and the players who just miss out bc youll notice that during the cup years the MLS draft consists of more youth players.

Really? Just because Buddle doesn’t score you say that? I think LA can be pretty predictable right now…

  13. Wallace had a horrible whiff on the cross that allowed Kamara to put it in. CO needs to move him back to the midfield, the kid cannot defend.

  14. Sounds good to me. I’m sick and tiered of the way he keeps the Revolution in contention year after year. I’d love to see him do that for DC United.

  15. Every team except Toronto needs a De Rosario type. Contact hem, if you run across any. In fact, contact Toronto as well. They could use a De Rosario type since they’re playing DeRo out of position.

  16. I agree, if he had used one less move he could have had a brace last night, easily. There were a few times in the highlights where I thought, “how did he not score there?” He just overthought it. It’s clear though, that he has the moves and the confidence to play with the ball in the box.

  17. Chivas USA attacked the New England defense well BEFORE the first goal. After Perovic got carded, it just opened the flood gates. We are not in total form, but we are playing more cohesively.

No one really mentions Chivas USA in much MLS conversation, but this team is progressing under Martin Vasquez. Gringo Padilla is playing with confidence. Sacha is playing like someone who thinks they have a shot at South Africa. Bornstein is playing his natural LB with more attacking opportunities. Thornton was Goalkeeper of the year for a reason. The Killer B’s are a revelation. Dario Delgado is a CB that no one even heard of. Justin Braun? Well, he’s Justin Braun. Lahoud was a good draft pick last year and is showing signs of a good midfielder. Trujillo provides leadership and calmness to our backline.

I do hope for New England to get its A players back. Nicol is a damn good coach. Too bad Kraft won’t spend a little more.

  18. Hamid isn’t even the best goalie to come out of the DC United Academy last year. Samir Badr landed in Marseilles — despite DCU’s hope that they could hang on to him — and he’s been called into the US U20 squad for an upcoming tourney.

  19. You can’t really blame a keeper when someone is left wide open on the far post. He got over there well, but the ball just went under his hand. These are professional players and you have to expect an unmarked forward to finish in that sitution.

  20. Houston sorely need someone to drive their attack. Davis is a great player but they need a De Rosario type that is just creative and will take chances from distance. The injuries are starting to hurt. Hope Robinson is okay.

  21. Jerome–I am a supporter of Buddle, but–I thought it looked like he “overthought” his moves last night. Had he pulled the trigger just a tad sooner on a couple of occasions, he might have come away with a goal.

I still think he is looking good.

  22. Edson buddle is a beast. he did not score but the moves with the ball at his feet near the goal and the off the ball runs he does are just class. Hopefully he beats out brian ching in camp for the target player role on the US team, and he shoudl anyway with Ching rushing his injury.

  23. fcd looked decent. they are missing a quality striker. cunningham didn’t play (hurt?) and atiba harris played ok. brek shea is improving, but not there yet. dax and ferreira are quality. I thought the straight red for benitez was a joke.

  24. Looking at last year’s final standings, RSL qualified last for the playoffs with 40 points. The Galaxy is almost halfway there after only 7 games. With Gordon and DelaGarza scoring this week, the rest of the league is soon to start shouting “BREAK UP THE GALAXY” to Don Garber.

  25. Is it too early to start the petition for Bill Hamid to make the WC roster so he can garner MNT experience?

Oh, he did look pretty decent and is an awesome prospect, but I can’t wait for posts where people actually mean it like when Michael Hoyos had two consecutive starts and people thought he should be called in right away.
