Wednesday Kickoff: Barcelona-Tenerife, Old Firm highlights

By AVI CREDITOR

Lionel Messi scored two more goals to pad his league total to 31, Bojan and Pedro each found the back of the net and FC Barcelona pulled away from Tenerife to win Tuesday, 4-1, and keep the pressure on Real Madrid in the La Liga race.

Barca leads Madrid by four points in the league table, though Cristiano Ronaldo & Co. have a game in hand (including a match at Mallorca on Wednesday).

CELTIC TAKES OLD FIRM DERBY

Marc-Antoine Fortune scored right before halftime to give Glasgow Celtic a 2-1 edge that it would hang on to in winning some bragging rights in Tuesday's Old Firm match against Glasgow Rangers.

Maurice Edu started and played 90 minutes, and DaMarcus Beasley did not dress for Rangers, who had pulled level in the 43rd minute on Kenny Miller's goal.

Rangers will still win the Scottish Premier League even after dropping the result to its rival, as it maintains an eight-point lead in the table with just one match remaining in the season. Here's video of the final two goals:

Think Real Madrid still has a shot at unseating Barcelona in La Liga? How many goals do you think Messi will end up scoring this season? Disappointed that Rangers couldn't pull out a result?

  1. He did re-injure himself after December so I figured he was still feeling it slightly.

The Beaz of December is what we need in June – if he can’t offer it than his slot goes.

  2. Recently Bradley said he needs to know why Beasley is not playing. It would be difficult for any professional to be in form playing just 10 games a year.

It doesn’t appear that an injury took him out after his 4 games. What did happen at the time was the attack on his car with the ‘mob girl’ association attached, just speculation, but nothing else has been offered.

  3. I couldn’t help noticing how reluctant Ibra is to go in front of goal and take on the CBs. On various occasions including free kicks you’ll find him on the fringe, with giants Messi and Pedro taking on the CBs. This reluctance let Inter’s CBs free to pack the middle and wait on Messi and others.

According to ESPN, Beasley DNP, DND again without explanation.

  4. Yeah Fred…

Edu looks really good…a tough, athletic and physical player and a better distributor of the ball than people realize.

Rangers deserved at least a draw.

  5. The irony of DMB’s situation is that Rangers produced its best football (and attacking) of the season with him at right flank. He provides a speedy outlet that is rare in Scottish football. Unfortunately, he’s like “Glass Joe” of the famed Mike Tyson’s Punch Out!…1 knock and he’s down for the count!

  6. Ives can you please get highlights in a language other than German, it is painful to listen to all of those harsh noises.

  7. I’m starting to agree. I hope he has a strong showing in the friendlies and at WC and maybe gets picked up by some mid to low table premier league team, though the MLS wouldn’t be too bad for him. That being said if the out of form beasley shows up I don’t want him to touch the field. He’s so frustrating to watch, though even then he always has the potential to do something amazing. Wasn’t it him who set up our only goal in the last tournament by crossing to Clint? Other than that he was rubbish. But I’m still pulling for him. The last friendly and his run of games this year shows that he really does deserve a spot in camp and the friendlies at least.

  8. Anyone else watch the Rangers match? I thought Edu looked great — solid on D, and I was surprised how effective he was going forward.

  9. Poor Beasley. I wonder what happened this season! He was playing so well when Smith finally gave him a chance/he recovered from injury. Now, he’s healthy…and doesn’t even make the squad. He should still make the USMNT training camp, but after the world cup he needs to find a new club situation. At this point in his career, a move back to the MLS seems like a good option.
