Wednesday Kickoff: Decision Day looms for USMNT

USAvsCzechs (JohnToddISI)

Today is the day the U.S. men's national team reveals its 23-man World Cup roster and after last night's 4-2 loss to the Czechs, the picture is a bit clearer as we move closer to the announcement (1:20pm, ESPN).

Herculez Gomez helped his case, as did Robbie Rogers, Alejandro Bedoya and Edson Buddle to lesser extents. Eddie Johnson, Sacha Kljestan and Heath Pearce didn't help themselves.

For those of you who missed it, here is my take for Fox Soccer on last night's match (as well as my projected final 23).

As far as non-bubble thoughts from last night, DaMarcus Beasley, Stuart Holden, Maurice Edu, Jose Torres and Clarence Goodson all showed well. Jonathan Bornstein had a shocker and while I still think he makes the team, I'd say the chances of him getting on the field grow smaller by the day. Brad Guzan didn't have a great night and you have to think Marcus Hahnemann is the no. 2 goalkeeper now.

SBI correspondent Franco Panizo and I will be in Bristol, Connecticut for the live announcement of the roster selection, so be sure to check in here and for all your roster announcement coverage.

Who do you see making the squad? Share your thoughts below.

  1. I have been a DMB hater, but I must say he appears to be back in form.

Still think BB should have put down the hash pipe prior to selecting Bornstinky on defense. Dolo had issues too.

Big question mark before the Findley choice, although maybe he’s just been unlucky in his prior Caps. Also, you need the speed element he brings, even if his touch is off.

Otherwise, not much to argue with here. Thank the heavens for no Sasha or EJ. Bedoya has skill, but picked the wrong world cup to be a midfielder.

  2. nevermind, here it is:

Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan (Aston Villa, England), Marcus Hahnemann (Wolverhampton, England), Tim Howard (Everton, England).

Defenders: Carlos Bocanegra (Rennes, France), Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover, Germany), Jay DeMerit (Watford, England), Clarence Goodson (IK Start, Norway), Oguchi Onyewu (AC Milan, Italy), Jonathan Spector (West Ham, England).

Midfielders: DaMarcus Beasley (Glasgow Rangers, Scotland), Michael Bradley (Borussia Moenchengladbach, Germany), Ricardo Clark (Eintracht Frankfurt, Germany), Clint Dempsey (Fulham, England), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles), Maurice Edu (Glasgow Rangers, Scotland), Benny Feilhaber (AGF Aarhus, Denmark), Stuart Holden (Bolton, England), Jose Torres (Pachuca, Mexico).

Forwards: Jozy Altidore (Hull, England), Edson Buddle (Los Angeles), Robbie Findley (Salt Lake), Herculez Gomez (Puebla, Mexico).

  3. No Ching. I am not disappointed. He is a good team player but there is no sense that he would score against top competition. He has no speed. He can’t stretch defenses. Buddle and Gomez can. Would have loved to see EJ and Adu but neither earned a place. T
his team needs someone who can create magic. something out of nothing in the final third. Also we need our wide folks to do a better job of crossing the ball. Surprised at how many forwards. Finley is going because US needs a forward who can stretch defenses.
We can only hope that we never see JB on the field.

  4. Barrrrf.

Did you see how weak he was? On one play, he got beat to the outside (to slow), made a blind slide and got nothing (mental mistake), then got up as his marking was cutting inside for a cross (not fit enough to compensate for his other deficiencies). He should be made assistant coach, but he should not be on the pitch.

  5. Looks like Clint is starting up top with Jozy. And Holden starts on the right. But Bob is bringing FOUR forwards. So who knows?

  6. Who just heard Sage Steele: “deficiencies exposed in last nights convincing loss to Czech Republic.” Hey Sage Steele you idiot, I’m guessing you didn’t watch that game and I’m guessing you don’t know anything about soccer, that’s why I don’t watch Sportscenter

  7. —Altidore (Ching)——–Dempsey (Gomez)

    –Beasely (Holden)–Bradley (Torres)–Edu (Clark)—Donovan (Benny)

    –Boca (Pearce) —-Gooch (Marshall)–DeMeritt(Goodson)—Spector (Dolo)

    ———–Howard (Friedel)

And a spot still open for Rogers, Bedoya, Bornstein, Hahneman or Adu orrr Charlie??

Can someone tell me the last time a third goalie saw action in a WC game? has it ever happened? Makes sense to take Friedel and he certainly knows the English game and has experience.

  8. Holden seemed to be always moving forward and threatening. He also showed patience with the ball when surrounded. The Yanks looked nervous and kicked it eve3ry time the chez came near them. Only Torrer can hold the ball like Holden.

Beasley had more positives than negatives. He got himself out of a few jams and also had excellent service from the left.

Rogers has speed and played agressive.

Sacha Kljestan was a big disappointment. he almost always passed back, was not threatening, hardly ever went forward to create with the ball.

Gomez did not impress me. Sure he scored but we ..I know.

Ching had by far the best forward performance. He did the best holding the ball up. He never backs down, he took some fouls and did not get frustrated.

Pearce athletic but he had 2 major mistakes.

    Edu — ok

    johnson – i needed more.

Goodson showed he is a capable back up

  9. match fitness? the guy still hurt, he is favoring one leg over the other. I just don’t understand how he can be cleared to play but Davies been running at full stride can’t. something is at missed here.

  10. I’m with Ives on his final 23 which includes Bedoya. There’s a reason why BB inserted him as a mid second half sub. In BB’s mind Bedoyas already a favorite player to make the team. Sacha over Clark or JFT is a joke. Cutting Gooch is not going to happen either. Guess we’ll all know for sure in about 30 min.

  11. From Wahl’s Twitter:

“Not a definitive answer, but not a good sign for Ching making US 23. Surprising. RT @mconnolly10 Just saw B Ching at the Hartford airport.”

If that’s the case, I don’t get it. After THAT game is when he cuts Ching? He actually looked good last night! He’s a perfect late sub for a game where we’re trying to hold a result.

  12. if the starting line-up is:

    Donovan-Edu-Bradley-Holden (or Beasley)

then we’d have 9 starters with some EPL experience…

so the good news is that US players are familiar with the opposition, but the bad news is that the English are also familiar with ours and outside of Howard, Donovan and Dempsey, they should not be concerned with anyone else out there:

Jozy only scored one goal this year, Spector has been awful quite often lately, Boca could not get another EPL deal after Fulham, Onyewu flopped at Newcastle, Beasley did not cut it at Man City and has disappeared on the Rangers bench and Demerit is a second divison defender, whose one season in EPL wasn’t exactly spectacular…

unless someone believes that it is wise to ignore 40+ games each year as evidence of how players match up versus one another on a week by week basis, we should just really hope for England to play like chokers for us to even have a shot at a tie and after we lose 3-1, people should stop themselves before jumping on here and screaming about how Bradley is a bad coach, because the players who take the field (except for the 3 mentioned above) are a major cut below the opposition…

  13. But that’s twitter sometimes those things are fake. The only chance I see BB doing this is because he sees more in Buddle than Ching. I thought Ching had some nice toches last night and this is coming from a guy who didn’t want Ching near this team. We will all know what happens at 1:20

  14. I’m still wondering why BB didn’t call up Castillo and Simek to camp? Just how I am confuse he didn’t call up Adu to camp? I would rather take old players like Hejduk or Masteroni than Bornstink, he’s just a awful defender.
