The MLS Players Union has released the salaries for the 2010 MLS season.

In a year where salary and guaranteed contracts was the big news prior to the season, the average salary of MLS' 406 players is listed at $138,169, down 6.6 percent from last season's mark of $147,945.

Yet again, David Beckham leads the league with the highest salary in the league at $6.5 million while his Los Angeles Galaxy teammate Landon Donovan is second at $2.13 million. New York Red Bulls forward Juan Pablo Angel ($1.92 million), Toronto FC midfielder Julian de Guzman ($1.72 million) and Seattle Sounders midfielder Freddie Ljungberg ($1.34 million) round out the top five.

Incoming Seattle Sounders striker Blaise Nkufo will make $480,000. Houston Dynamo forward Luis Angel Landin is the least costly of the Designated Players at $125,000. The highest paid players who do not qualify under the DP rule are Landin's teammate Brian Ching and Colorado Rapids forward Conor Casey, who make $350,000 apiece.

For the salaries of the other players playing in the World Cup:

  • Edson Buddle, Los Angeles Galaxy, $188,488
  • Roger Espinoza, Kansas City Wizards, $108,750
  • Jonathan Bornstein, Chivas USA, $100,000
  • Robbie Findley, Real Salt Lake, $87,316
  • Andrew Boyens, New York Red Bulls, $62,005

  1. I think it means that the figures shown are under the cap structure. My understanding of how it works is each player is paid by the MLS. DP’s are paid up to $335K under the new contract by the MLS, and the club has to pay any amounts above that.

Based on that, a team might be paying a DP only $185K under the cap and more on their own tab. That would allow them to sign better players overall with the extra $150K they would now have under the cap/paid by MLS.

    I think.

  2. Believe me, he complained. They’ve had the rights to him for two years, but he wouldn’t sign until a month or so ago. He claimed the salary was insulting, but he had no other options.

  3. off 48,000 ?…..easy man, i live in the Bay Area with under 30,000. He is not going to be driving any sports cars, but he is fine. He does deserve a raise though.

  4. Cameron was a 4th round draft pick and he signed a deal that reflected as much; league minimum. And right now his not worth the $40K as he is out for the season. People were up and arms about Stuart Holden as well but people forgot he was signed off the street.
