Brek Shea's two-goal performance in a 2-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes was enough to earn him Major League Soccer Player of the Week honors.

Shea, the second pick in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft, notched the first multi-goal game of his career and gave FC Dallas some much-needed positive momentum heading into its World Cup break.

His goal in the 58th minute off a pass from David Ferreira put the Hoops ahead of the Quakes. A couple of minutes later he fended off Chris Leitch to slot home an insurance goal on a nice individual effort.

Here are highlights of Shea's goals:

  1. Shea had a good game, and a good week, POW does not mean player of the year. if Shea Salinas had game winning double for Philly and put on the same performance Brek did he would deserve player of the week too. But once again, not likely to win POY anytime soon. Willie, you don’t have to all that impressed by Brek Shea, but being able to admit that he did have a great game doesn’t mean you have to change your whole opinion of him. Again though, he is only 20, and does deserve to start and play for Dallas, but it is unfortunate that he has to play on the wing, he would be much better suited as a wing back or forward since his passing ins’t up to par yet, but his size and improving tackling would be very well suited in 4 years for the US once he has time to develop. This is my opinion of him, and I agree with you Willie that you can express your opinion, I disagree with your evaluation, but I do tend to be a bit biased towards Texans since I have lived here pretty much my whole life.

  2. I WAS impressed by Sheas two goals and I’m happy for his success

However I have watched almost every game since start of last year and at this point his run is an anomaly.

Hopefully it will be become the norm but to appoint him a star at this point is ludicrous.

Specifically from what ive seen in 1v1 in open field he gets the ball taken / turns the ball over almost 80-90% of time.

The FC roster has true underrated/underreported talent but Shea is neither. Next time Dallas plays your favorite team watch how our CB John (#14) completely neuters (insert your striker here).

Here is a player with size, instinct, and touch that has CONSISTENTLY played well.

If Shea can continue to score and Cunny gets it on track Dallas can post some Wins and allow other deserving players like John to get some recognition and more importantly get this team in the playoffs.

Again. congrats Shea but to power flame the early opinion post by Bret reflects on your lack of knowledge about the team not necessarily his.

  3. okay Shea had a good game. Lets not jump to far ahead and make him a national team player just yet. This was his 2nd and 3rd goal of his MLS career. Lets see if he can perform like this over a long season.

  4. I agree, but I think that’s in part to Schellas not exactly knowing where to play him, he’s been all over the field with sub roles from defence to forward, but I think with VDB’s departure he’s found his spot at left mid.

But personally, I think if he does go overseas he will be converted to a left back, I watch him play every week and he just doesn’t seem offensively intelligent enough to hang with some European teams, but defensively I think he would be a handful to get past.

I hope he proves me wrong and goes on to be an offensive powerhouse, but I also hope he could move to Europe and develop into a solid left back, both would help out our national team, especially the latter, I can’t remember the last LB to keep his spot more than a cycle with our NT.

  6. I get the feeling that Shea is going to get stuck in Kenny Cooper-land.

Too big to play on the wing, and not willing to be an out and out striker.

Like him for the next cycle (or the one after), either way!

  7. The second goal was not at all impressive… just got lucky that Cannon made a rare mistake and punched it right to him. Don’t get me wrong, Shea played a great game and he did the right thing there in fighting for it and not giving up on the ball, but it wasn’t exactly some amazing piece of skill on his part. It will be interesting to see how he develops. He definitely has some potential.

  8. Keep up the great work Brett. You are sure to win Stupid Poster of the Year!

Now don’t complain because I am simply posting my opinion..

  9. Hey Brett, you are welcome to post your opinion no matter how stupid it is. In fact, I encourage you to keep posting your stupid opinions. It is really great entertainment for the rest of us.

  10. I’ve been reading this blog for a while and to the best of my recollection the responses usually entail fans opinions regarding players or coaches covered in the post.

I guess it’s my fault for being unaware of the fact that in order to post those opinions as comments we must first be recognizable to the person or persons we are critiquing.

But I thank you Willie (you must be the famous Willie who knows all the players and coaches personally)… Now I know I can’t ever say anything negative about Bob Bradley’s national team selections since Bob does not know me personally. But then, why is anyone even commenting? I guess from now on all my comments will have to be sycophantic and homeristic. GREAT JOB IVES!!! BREK SHEA RUNS AND HAS GREAT HAIR AND SHOULD BE ON THE NATIONAL TEAM!!!

  11. Oh I’m sorry, I didn’t know I was here before a judging panel. I thought I was in a place where I could express my opinion. My bad.

  12. I’m calling Shea for an impressive season. His injury definitely set him back last time around, but he’s doing very well now. He’s a versatile guy with good skill and pace, but his size and physique make him tough to deal with for even the most physical of backlines. Other than that, he’s got a great finishing touch, and works very hard. His goal against the Union shows his great shot, and his two goals here show his nose for goal and sheer power. He times his runs well and I’d like to see him at other positions.

  13. That’s your right. You do realize how you look telling the world how unimpressive he is.

On the post that tell us he’s the won player of the week no less.

A 20 year old American bagging a brace and this is your contribution?

  14. Couldn’t agree more! I think he has a good season now and gets shipped abroad. He has the physique to make it with the best – he just needs better coaching. I know United were linked with him awhile back (although we all know how much that helped Cooper)…

  15. Brek Shea is very talented who has some serious potential but, he has yet to look completely comfortable at any position hopefully that starts to change now.

  16. I saw his first goal of the year live versus the Union – very impressive. I agree he should be considered for the next cycle (starting with Brazil in August?).

  17. I thought Leo Gonzalez had an amazing game for the Sounders. Scoring an amazing volley to end the Qwest Field drought and then assisting on the third goal. He also shut down the entire right side of NE’s attack. Such a solid night for him.

  18. I think Shea is one to watch for the next cycle. His first goal of the year, not sure who it was against, was really well taken.

  19. That’s ok Brett. I told Shea what you said and his response was, “Who is Brett”.

I guess nobody cares what you think.

  20. Not that I agree with the Shea being player of the week, but a game winner and insurance goal is more important that 2 our of 4 goals in a 4-1 win.
