Leo Gonzalez hadn't scored in Major League Soccer prior to Saturday. You wouldn't know it based on the quality of the Costa Rican defender's strike against the New England Revolution.
Gonzalez' goal, which broke a 270-minute home scoreless streak for Seattle, acted as the catalyst in the Sounders' 3-0 victory over the Revolution and took home Major League Soccer Goal of the Week honors.
In a week when there were plenty of other wonderstrikes (Seth Stammler vs. Chivas, Steve Zakuani vs. New England, Juan Pablo Angel vs. Houston), Gonzalez' effort stood out above the rest and is worth another look:
What did you think of the goal? Think Stammler, Zakuani or Angel deserved the award instead?

Angel’s strike was not that good, it was poor goal keeping, it should have been stopped. The keeper had no chance at stopping the Gonzales shot.
I laugh.. this is SBI
SEAAAATTTTLEEEEEE!!!!!
Or it’s the fact that Angel’s goal wasn’t good enough to best the competition for this week’s GOTW.
dont forget…NY has many haters in all sports. Angel could have back healed it over the wall 35 years out to win the game and still wouldnt have won. its called envy folks
Wait, so your saying that JPA had it setup? Well yes, but so did the other teams defense and the goalkeeper on that FK, they were expecting it, defending against it even, and still JPA put it in for a winner. Don’t get me wrong they should have all been awarded the goal of the week. It should just be the top 5 goals of the week. But to say that it was any easier to get that goal, is silly.
Angel’s and Stammler’s were better in my opinion. Good show.
+1!
Gonzalez got my vote this week. Nicely done.
Um, no way. Moor did really well with his goal, but there’s no way it was better than Gonzalez’s goal, or even the other two mentioned.
But you can keep telling yourself otherwise if it makes you feel better.
“What did you think of the goal? Think Stammler, Zakuani or Angel deserved the award instead?”
No, Drew Moor did.
The difference being Gonzo’s strike was on the half-volley and JPA got to put his on a tee.
Angel got shafted this week. He scored a 35 yard free kick in stoppage time to stop a 4 game losing streak…and he loses out to a lucky goal from a left back lol. Seattle must have hit those polls hard.
JPA should have def won this.
Gonz had a sweet strike, but I thought Zak’s was the better of the two.
I would agree, except Zakuani was right in front of goal while Gonzalez was outside the box and had a tight angle to work with. Ultimately, both are great strikes and deserving of the honor.
I’ve been waiting for SBI to recognize the quality of that strike.
I actually think Zakuani’s goal gets more “difficulty points”, though Leo’s gets “style points” with the bend on the ball, outside of the foot strike, angle of the shot, etc.
But Zak hit his full volley straight out of the air with a defender in his face, and stuck it out to the side at waist height. That is a very, very difficult shot to keep down and hit squarely.
Both are great goals.
It was the ball’s fault.
great goal, definitely set the pace of the game early. that’s what we need!
