Morning Ticker: Quakes, Crew draw; Capello commits to England and more

The San Jose Earthquakes twice battled from one-goal deficits to salvage a 2-2 draw with the Columbus Crew at Buck Shaw Stadium Wednesday night.

Chris Wondolowski maintained his hot start to the season with his sixth goal, a 79th-minute header off a cross from Scott Sealy that pulled the Quakes level.

Eddie Gaven and Arturo Alvarez swapped goals in the opening five minutes, and the game remained tied until Chad Marshall headed home a Guillermo Barros Schelotto corner kick in the 70th minute to put the Crew ahead momentarily.

Match highlights are after the jump:

CAPELLO EXTENDS ENGLAND STAY

England manager Fabio Capello has signed an amended contract that excludes an opt-out clause for after the World Cup, meaning that he intends to manage the team through Euro 2012.

Capello's initial contract gave him the option of leaving the England post after this summer's tournament to pursue other coaching opportunities, but he has committed his future to the Three Lions and left some of the top club teams in the world (i.e. Inter Milan) scrambling for other coaching options.

ENGLAND REVEALS JERSEY NUMBERS

David James has drawn the No. 1 jersey for England this summer, leading to speculation that he'll be between the pipes when the United States and England do battle in nine days.

Wayne Rooney, not surprisingly, will don the No. 10 shirt.

Here's the complete squad:

MAICON EYES MADRID

Brazilian defender Maicon, considered by many to be the best right back in the world, is reportedly interested in reuniting with Jose Mourinho after revealing his passion to play for Real Madrid.

Maicon helped lead Inter Milan to the UEFA Champions League crown and he would add yet another dynamic to a team that is desperately trying to overcome rival Barcelona on the world stage.

UKRAINE GETS GREEN LIGHT TO CO-HOST EURO 2012

Ukraine and Poland will co-host Euro 2012 as planned, after UEFA approved Ukraine's progress in completing work to its stadiums and airports. Germany and Hungary had emerged as secondary options if UEFA were to deny Ukraine of the right to host the tournament.

  1. Last night at the Quakes/Crew game I saw Will Change, owner of DC United, sitting with Lew Wolff. I wonder what Chang was doing in San Jose?

  2. I agree about the Corrales and Convey match up… Corrales has been the top player for the Quakes the last few games.

The Arturo sub was most likely planned at half, maybe even before the game. If you noticed at the start of the half Wondolowski and Alvarez switched positions. Alvarez didn’t get the full 90 because he’s been out for more than a month. He’s not yet fit to play a whole game.

  3. ya i was at the game too! i do like the smaller venue at my alma mater too! if it’s gonna be a small crowd, keep it in a small venue rt?

good game but i could use better midfield passing – tough on that small field

Wondolowski finishes, but for 89 of the other minutes he was garbage. only players worse were #33 and Luiza (waste of precious brazilian blood).

alvarez also was terrible, despite his goal, his only contribution to the match. theres a reason why he got subbed out. i mean, #10 being subbed out? something’s wrong here.

Corrales and Convey have good chemistry – but Bobby got tired after the 50th minute – plus they need a 3rd in this triangle

  5. Tony i hear ya. i’m a sth since ’99 and let me tell you it’s very hard to watch them play a lot times. the personel as you mention has a lot to do w/ it. seems like were more lucky than good(i’ll take a win however), and when luck runs out then your left w/ a very ugly product.

also, what a bust eduardo has been. how didn’t the coaching staff catch, that he was already injured when we signed him. there has been NO word as to when in hell is even going to be ready to play!

  6. Yes, Madrid need to work on their back line, but Right Back is the one spot where they already have great player. I know Mourinho is Mourinho, and Maicon is the best RB in the world, but does anyone really think that Madrid would get rid of Serio Ramos? I think not.

  7. The replay above does not show it but when Gaven (?) laid the ball off to Zayner, he was a good 2 feet hella offsides!!! Actually if you look at the run of play above, you can see Zayner having to reach back for the ball before eventually crosssing it to Schellotto.

I do not know how the linesmen, the quake players, and virtually all the quakes fans missed that (the commentator brought it up but didnt investigate it). I went home and watched that incident again on my DVR and I was right. If the replays shown above went a little more back to when Zayner recieved his pass from Gaven, you would clearly see that Zayner was offsides……

Well thats my whine for the week haha

  8. I was at the Quakes-Crew game last night. Great match to watch in person. Back and forth. Both sides had chances. Very exciting.

The only good thing about a 10,500 seat stadium is it still looks packed for low-drawing mid-week games.

  9. COnvey lost more by getting injuried (not his fault) at Reading and sucking so unbeleivably much after joining the Quakes (his fault) and whining about unnamed coaches consipring against him.

That said, I’m glad he’s back in form. It is amusing that I have to keep explaining to my 11 year old son that way back when he was a toddler, Convey was ALWAYS mentioned in the same sentence with Donovan and Beasley. Last year, he thought I was lying…this year he is strating to maybe beleive me.

  10. The first 20 minutes of that CLB-SJO match looked like it was going to be a 7-6 scoreline, but the defenses finally settled down. Columbus clearly was hurting for space, and their speed was reined in by the sidelines, cutting into the effectiveness of guys like Rogers and Renteria.

Gaven in the middle was curious, but he has really grown into the role and might be being groomed to replace Schelotto as a withdrawn striker/CAM role. I doubt he’ll ever player there for the USMNT, but he could grow into the role for MLS and make a nice career there.

  11. I wonder how much Convey lost moving from Reading to SJ? Probably a few hundred grand.

can you believe EJ makes $40,000 a match with Fulham. Their highest paid I believe is Andy Johnson who makes double that, or around 90-95,000 a match. Unbelievable. No wonder EJ doesn’t wanna leave Fulham. Probably highest paid Yank outfield player.

  12. The Quakes sucked so mucn since coming back, and ahve been so frustrting with questionable personal decisions (especially going into last year) that…I just have a hard time believing they are good. I know, silly, isn’t it?

Part of the problem for me may be their style. There isn’t a lot of build up to their goals. It is usually an individual effort or a lucky pinball effect when a ball drops in the right place. The Red Bulls, SOunders and Galaxy, to name three< play much more attractive soccer.

Am I wrong to want to be entertained AND win?

  13. Yep seems everyone omitted from the NT is playing with fire in their belly. Hope EJ will as well whether for Aris or Fulham.

I plan to be in London at a hostel near Victoria Station for a week in late July. any chance Fulham will be practicing or playing a pre-season. I wanna meet Dempsey and EJ. Tell me they will be there.

  14. Good to see Wondolowski fulfilling his potential. We kept hearing he was the best finisher on the Dynamo, but he just never consistently produced the goals when he played here.

  15. I like what Capello has done with England, but the lack of young blood coming through the ranks is worrying. An international coach can only work with what he’s got. I think England has been overrated during qualifying and will be a Q-final team (at best) in S.Africa. Still, England has one of the best coaches in the world and I can’t think of any others better-qualified for the job.
