CONCACAF's third participant Honduras kicks off their World Cup adventure this morning in a vital Group H match against Chile that may determine who advances to the second round behind group favorite Spain. The match is set to take place at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit(7:30 a.m. , ESPN/ESPN3.com)

Both teams will be depending on the health of a Suazo as they head into this crucial match. Honduran forward David Suazo faces a fitness test to get ready for today's match due to a leg muscle issue. For Chile, Humberto Suazo looks ready to play a role for La Roja after overcoming a left thigh injury. Los Catrachos will be without one player due to injury as Juilo De Leon will miss the World Cup which prompted head coach Reinaldo Rueda to call up forward Jerry Palacios.

I'll be providing commentary on today's match so please follow along in the comments section below. Enjoy the match!

FINAL – Chile earn a very convincing victory against the Hondurans. A very free flowing attack from the Chileans led to constant chances against the Catracho defense, but one will have to ask if they will be punished for not adding to their goal differential. For the Catrachos, the team created no offense against Chile. This is a nation that is clearly missing David Suazo and will need to have their star forward back if they are going to come back from the deficit. That's all from me today, thanks for following along and make sure to make Soccer By Ives your one stop shop for World Cup coverage.

——————–

93rd Minute – Honduras lose the ball and Chile put a great counter back into the Honduran zone. Gonzalez with a bit of selfish play and the match is over! CHILE 1 HONDURAS 0

——————

92nd Minute – Honduras putting some pressure on Chile. Corner for Honduras.

——————

90th Minute – Gonzalez looking active right now. Pretty impressive from the former Liverpool winger.

——————

89th Minute – Chile look to be holding the 1-0 lead. Welcome takes a chance but it does not test the keeper.

——————

89th Minute – Chile has been very effective throwing numbers back on defense and forcing Honduras to make some costly turnovers in the attacking zone.

——————

86th Minute – CHILE SUB: MARK GONZALEZ FOR JORGE VALDIVIA

——————

85th Minute – Honduras starting to gain some more possession as the game begins to tick down.

——————

82nd Minute – Chile looking to kill off the game now with the defender for defender sub. Could this lead to more chances for the Catrachos?

——————

80th Minute – CHILE SUB: PABLO CONTRERAS FOR ARTURO VIDAL

——————

79th Minute – Little doubt in my mind that Chile is one of the best teams of the tournament so far. Very exciting and free flowing soccer from La Roja. It is a testament to the Honduran defense that Chile is not up by more right now.

—————

77th Minute – HONDURAS SUB: Walter Martinez for Ramon Nunez

—————

75th Minute – No idea what Sanchez was thinking there. Clearly stopped it with his hand after scooping up the rebound. Great game by the youngster, but very poor decision making.

—————

74th Minute – The Hondurans have been incredibly disappointing today. Palacios and Figueroa are doing their job in the center of defense, but the complete lack of any attack is damaging Honduras.

—————-

72nd Minute – Valdivia appears finished. The midfielder who was fantastic in the first half is limping pretty severely. I imagine that he'll be off soon.

—————-

70th Minute – Looks like a penalty there as the ball goes off the hand of a Chilean defense.

—————-

70th Minute – Honduras corner won by Palacios

————————

69th Minute – Great diving tackle by the sub Thomas who makes a last ditch effort to stop a Chilean chance in the box. Chile is looking for that insurance goal.

—————

65th Minute – HONDURAS SUB: Hendry Thomas for Armando Guevara

—————-

64TH Minute – WHAT A SAVE BY VALLADARES!!!! POINT BLANK CHANCE BY PONCE IS SAVED BY THE HONDURAN!

—————-

62nd Minute – FANTASTIC RUN BY SANCHEZ! Poor shot however wastes a fantastic run. Great chance for Chile, can Honduras make them pay for their wastefulness?

————-

59th Minute – HONDURAS SUB: GEORGIE WELCOME FOR CARLOS PAVON

————-

58th Minute – Georgie Welcome about to come on for Honduras, presumably for the ineffectual Pavon.

————-

56th Minute – No penalty given on that Sanchez tackle. Palacios brings down the young attacker, but there is nothing coming from that tackle.

————–

54th Minute – Nearly 15 minutes into the second half, Honduras is showing some energy but is still not generating any real chances on the Chilean goal.

—————

53rd Minute – CHILE SUB: Jara in for Milar.

—————

50th Minute – Pavon clears the all out of some danger. He goes down and is slow to get up. Pavon hasn't threatened Chile at all and may need to be pulled if Honduras is to get back into this match.

—————

49th Minute – Another corner for Chile. The pressure piles on.

————–

46th Minute – Fantastic defending by the Boca Juniors man Medel. Risky tackle, but he gets all ball and clears it.

—————

45th Minute –  And We're Back!

—————

HALFTIME – Entertaining half by the Chileans who are deservedly up 1-0 on Honduras. Chile controlled the tempo throughout the first half were eventually rewarded. Look for Honduras to bring on  some offensive substitutions as Rueda's men have been unable to generate any semblance of offense. That is all for me till the end of half time. If you're following along, please let me hear from you. Where you from and who are you supporting in this match?

————–

45th Minute – Nicely hit by Nunez. Honduras earns a corner, but the whistle is blown.

—————

45th Minute – One minute of stoppage. Honduras with a dangerous free kick 33 meters from the goal.

—————–

44th Minute – Very lucky there for Honduras. Unintentional hand ball by Figueroa as Honduras. Could have been a penalty there.

——————

43rd Minute – Alvarez and Pavon have just not been able to link up all day for the Hondurans. That last pass is constantly eluding the Catrachos right now. Expect Suazo to see some time on the field in the second half.

—————-

40th Minute – Chile looking pretty dangerous right now. If the team can continue to play as a cohesive unit, this is a team that can do some damage in this tournament.

—————-

38th Minute – Alvarez tries to make something happen for Honduras, but loses the ball and the Chileans once again take possession.

——————–

35th Minute – Horrible luck right there for the Catrachos as a Honduran clearance goes off Beausejour. The Chilean attacker waves off the celebration because he knows that was a gift from Honduras. Deserved 1-0 lead for Chile.

———————

34th Minute – CHILE GOAL!!!!!!!!!!! LA ROJA TAKE THE LEAD AS BEAUSEJOUR SCORES!!

———————-

33rd Minute – YELLOW CARD (PALACIOS/HONDURAS) Poor decision right there by the ref as he awards Wilson Palacios with a yellow despite the foul being committed by Espinoza. Very Questionable .

——————-

32nd Minute – Back and Forth, Back and forth right now. Each team getting their time in the others zone, only to have their opponents strike back on the counter. Exciting few minutes.

—————–

30th Minute – Pace slows down right now as Chile is just looking for that hole in the Honduras defense, but the Catrachos are not giving up any space in their defense right now.

——————

25th Minute – Another Corner for Chile. OPEN HEADER FOR VIDAL, but it goes over the net. Poor chance there.

——————-

24th Minute – Vidal with a risky tackle on Alvarez. I have been very disappointed by the Chileans early. Very positive going forward, but a number of poor tackles. That will get them into big trouble later in the tournament.

——————–

22nd Minute – Alexis Sanchez with the ball in a very dangerous spot, but a comical miss forces the Chilean to the ground. Ouch, now that's embarrassing.

——————–

21st Minute – Weak corner by the ex FC Dallas man that goes straight to Bravo. Chle strike right back and its Valdivia once more who earns a corner for Chile. Impressive counter.

——————–

20th Minute – Espinoza with a ROCKET for a shot that goes off Gary Medel. Corner for Honduras.

——————–

19th Minute – YELLOW CARD – Fernandez (Chile) Another sloppy and reckless challenge by Chile leads to a yellow card. That does not bode well for the team going forward, they're going to have to correct that.

——————–

18th Minute – Great counter after the failed corner. Pavon creates some space for himself, but a weak shot does not challenge the goal. He wants that one back.

———————-

16th Minute – Corner for Chile. Very dangerous few minutes for the Catrachos

———————

14th Minute – Espinoza with a bit of a chance right there, but the long cross does not challenge the goalkeeper.

——————-

13th Minute – Valadia has to be upset with that ball right there. He had Beausejour open, but hit it just a bit too hard. Poor ball to be sure.

—————-

10th Minute – Bielsa with a fantastic plan so far. Chile dominating posssession and preventing Honduras from breaking into the Chilean zone. Now I know why when I asked former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet on her nation's chances she spoke so highly of the "Mad Man"

—————-

6th Minute – Chile dominating possession so far, but Honduas starting to ccreate some danger. Nunez with a great run, but the ball is deflected and ends up in the hands of the Chilean keeper.

—————-

5th Minute – Chile with a free kick just to the right of the penalty area., a shot is generated, but no luck beating Honduras yet.

—————-

4th Minute – YELLOW CARD – Carmona. Honduras gets the ball out of danger, Alvarez finds some space but Carmona comes in with a big challenge and picks up the yellow.

—————-

3rd Minute – Chile with a corner.

—————-

2nd Minute – Near miss right there by Valdivia. Goes right above the net of the Honduran keeper. Great chance for La Roja.

—————–

1st Minute – Palacios with a sloppy challenge on Valdivia, that will lead to a free kick.

——————

1st Minute – Here we go! Chile vs. Honduras. Who will challenge Spain in Group H??

——————-

PRE-GAME: We are Suazo-less for this match as Humberto for Chile and David for Honduras will both begin the match on the bench. It may be early (4:30am – here in Los Angeles) but this will be a big one.

————–

PRE-GAME: As the anthems play and we look at the rosters. we see the huge MLS connection from Honduras. Roger Espinoza of the Kansas City Wizards will get the start at the right wing while former MLS players Ramon Nunez, Carlos Pavon, and Armando Guevara also grace the Honduran line up.

————–

PRE-GAME: Interesting factoids about tonight's match, Honduras is returning to the World Cup 28 years to the date after playing in their first World Cup match ever. A 1-1 draw against then hosts Spain in 1982.

In addition, the call up of Jerry Palacios to replace Carlos De Leon means that it will be the first time that three brothers will appear on the same team at a World Cup. A story particularly touching after the death of the fourth Palacios brother, Edwin in a kidnapping attack in 2007. American fans may remember that Jerry Palacios scored the winning goal in Los Catrachos 3-1 victory against the United States in January.

Comments

  1. I agree losing three of their stars was catastrophic. Suazo, Costly and De Leon make all the difference in the world for Honduras. De Leon is monster on free kicks and knows how to keep possession and arm attacks. Suazo is super quick and always deadly. Costly is just a workhorse that does everything for Honduras. Massive losses for Honduras and I think with them out Honduras’ chances went too. Hopefully they get a win against Switzerland.

  2. if…if…if…if

If bornstein didn’t score, Honduras would probably be watching on tv.

See what i mean about the “If’s”?

It doesn’t matter what they would have “if”, it only matters what they actually did.

  3. Dear J.

If we ban the vuvu’s for you, how about we ban ugly fat americans from entering the next world up we hold in the USA? We take one thing you dislike from other cultures and we take one thing all the cultures dislike from yours?

    Fair trade, no?
