World Cup: Serbia vs. Germany (Your Running Commentary)

Germany Serbia

A Group D matchup opens today's World Cup action, as Germany looks to build on an impressive opening performance when they take on Serbia in Port Elizabeth, South Africa (7:30 a.m., ESPN/ESPN3.com).

Die Mannschaft played what many have labeled the best game of the tournament, a 4-0 win over Australia last Sunday. The German offense was firing on all cylinders, but are expected to have a much more difficult time breaking down Serbia. Strong play from young midfielders Sami Khedira and Mesut Özil would make the Germans difficult to stop once again.

Meanwhile, Serbia faces a must-win situation after losing their opening game against. Big name players Nemanja Vidić and Dejan Stankovic must stand up and deliver if Serbia wants to avoid another loss and an early ticket home.

If you are watching the game, please feel free to share any thoughts, opinions and play-by-play in the comments section below. Enjoy the match.

  1. Low did a horribel job with his subs. Ozil was the most creative player on the field, why take him off? Muller was starting to play well, too. Germany lost the game on a card happy ref, terribel shooting from Podolski, and idiotic coaching from Low.

Credit to Serbia for fighting through it.

  2. @ John

Want to include the US for what they did to various Native American groups or perhaps African-Americans? Ridiculous comment that has nothing to do with the players on the field or the game. Stopp talking out of your a$$hole!

  3. I’m still not convinced Serbia is that good, and that the early cards rattled the Germans as they got more of them that the Serbs. The Serbs took full advantage of the game that was presented to them, and you can’t argue with the outcome. The ref gave them some rope and they hung the Germans with it. I still think Germany pounds Ghana in the last game and we’re looking at goal difference for whether the US plays Germany or Serbia.

  4. He’s probably more ticked off at the official than anything else. Germany didn’t look terrible. It just begs the questions, did Serbia underperform last game? Is Germany as good as they looked against Australia? Is Australia just absolutely horrible?

  5. I think the first one wasn’t so much for that specific foul but for the fact he’d done the same type of thing at least twice before that.

  6. What in the world happened to Germany today? I know some people have been complaining about this world cup having so many draws, etc but one thing I can say that has been exciting is that the teams you think would win don’t and the teams that you thought were just going to trip over their feet, do.

I would hate to be a German player, especially Podolski, going into that locker room because Loew looks ticked off to the 10th degree.

  7. Serbia wins and is practically assured passage to the next round. Does this mean the US does not mind finishing second in our group, assuming we advance? All credit to Serbia, but I would rather play them than Germany in a knock out.

  8. I’m not sure what you guys are watching, but I’m seeing Germany dishing out late hits galore, playing the man after he’s gone past, and getting carded for them. Or kicking the heels out of the Serbs.

I think most refs just don’t give cards for these, but they are all cardable offenses.

  9. Yeah, this match could lead to suspensions later on for Germany. Very unfortunate for them. Germans have looked better than Serbia even since going down a man.

  10. Right here.

A large portion of officials are corrupt. In fact, in the past two months, two previous big time World Cup officials have been suspended for match fixing DURING THE WORLD CUP.
