World Cup: South Africa vs. Uruguay (Your Running Commentary)

Uruguaylogo SAlogo

Each of the 32 nations have now had a chance to open their respective World Cup campaigns in South Africa. Now, it's on to the second round of games, with host nation South Africa taking on Uruguay (2:30pm, ESPN/ESPN3.com) to wrap up today's action.

Group A is wide open, with both matches last Friday settled as ties. South Africa enjoys a slight advantage over Uruguay in the standings, simply because they've managed to score a goal, something the South Americans were unable to do in their opener with France. It's a national holiday in South Africa, and a Bafana Bafana win would send the home country into euphoria.

Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez remain crucial to the Uruguay offensive hope, while South Africa hopes to boost their hopes of making the second round.

If you are watching the game, please feel free to share any thoughts, opinions and play-by-play in the comments section below. Enjoy the match.

  1. Isn’t that a thing England and Mexico have in common, always overestimating how good their teams are and blowing up expectations to a an unrealistic level?

  2. I think it’s because all South American teams play that “beautiful game.” And, I think that we have this preconceived idea that all of the big European teams are going to perform. And teams like Spain and England notoriously under perform in the World Cup.

  3. Yeah. At least the USA hasn’t resorted to that yet. Most of the South American teams, and Italy, are famous for that.

  4. If we drop 3 points to a horrible France side, after only getting 1 point against South Africa….we don’t deserve to be in the Cup.

    Plain and simple.

I think we probably overrated the quality of this squad.

  5. I’m not sure, I’ve looked at the Interpretation part of the offsides and I don’t see anything about a deflection resetting the offsides.

    Pg. 107 of FIFA Laws:
“The shot by a team-mate (A) rebounds off an opponent to attacker (B) who is
penalised for playing the ball having previously been in an offside position.”

That is not really that clear. To me that means if he was offsides when the shot is taken and deflects off defender and he is offsides. It doesn’t say anything about if he is onside when the deflection happens, unless i’m missing some part of the rules.
