The first team to keep its World Cup dreams alive and reach the quarterfinals will be decided today when Uruguay and Korea Republic battle in the opening Round of 16 match (10am, ESPN).

Uruguay enters the second round of the tournament having won a tricky Group A. Led by Diego Forlan, Los Charruas have a potent attack that compliments it stingy defense, which didn't allow a goal in its group stage matches.

Having finished second in Group B, Korea Republic showed off a quick, technical offense that causes havoc on opposing back lines. Boasting talented attackers Lee Chung-Yong and Park Ji-Sung, the Red Devils have quality in attack, but their defense is a bit suspect, having allowed six goals thus far.

FINAL- For the U.S. and Ghana, Uruguay's second half performance is something to be confident about for the quarterfinals match. But which of the two teams will play the South Americans for the shot at the semis? We'll know in a few hours.

South Korea's sadness is understandable, but at the end of the day they exceeded expectations and showed off some quality soccer.

87th minute- WOW. A great ball is played through to Dong Gook behind the Uruguayan defense and his shot goes past Muslera, but doesn't have enough pace to roll into goal. Ball cleared.

84th minute- Uruguay substitute: Suarez replaced by Alvaro Fernandez.

79th minute- Uruguay earns a corner and this is where Korea Republic needs to be doubly concentrated, especially with the rain and awkward bounces that may arise.

74th minute- Uruguay substitute: Nicolas Lodeiro in for Alvaro Pereira.

71st minute- WOW! Chung Yong has a chance to put Korea Republic ahead after a great run from Ji Sung, but his shot goes straight at Muslera.

70th minute- What a game we have on our hands now. Uruguay has fallen flat and needs to do something if it wants to avoid losing this match.

68th minute- GOAL KOREA REPUBLIC! 1-1! Chung-Yong rises to meet a ball in the area and he knocks it over Muslera. WOW.

65th minute- Lugano called for a foul after South Korea knocked the ball around wonderfully for the good portion of a couple minutes.

60th minute- Korea Republic making a subs: Lee Dong Gook in for Jae Sung.

59th minute- Du-Ri makes a nice run down the right and sends in a cross that Ji-Sung heads only to see Muslera make a nice save. Better buildup from the South Koreans.

55th minute- South Korea is pressuring Uruguay now. The South Americans are in a shell right now and can't get out of their own half.

51st minute- Nothing comes of the corner, but on the ensuing play, Chu-Young sees a ball drop to him 12 yards from goal and he skies his shot. Wow. Should have done better there.

50th minute- Nice run down the left flank ends in a corner for Korea Republic.

49th minute- A defensive miscue puts Korea Republic on its heels, but Suarez takes an ambitious shot from distance and its gobbled up Sung-Ryong.

HALFTIME- Uruguay substitute: Godin is out and Mauricio Victorino is in.

HALFTIME- Uruguay only needs to hold on for 45 minutes to book its passage to the quarterfinals.

HALFTIME- Ji-Sung and Chu-Young need to pick up their games in the second half if Korea Republic is going to break down Uruguay's organized defense.

HALFTIME- Uruguay finding loads of success on the counter, while Korea Republic has struggled to find the final ball to create clear chances.

HALFTIME- German referee Wolfgang Stark blows the whistle and it's halftime. Uruguay leads, 1-0.

45th minute- Nothing comes of the free kick. Well unless you count another Du-Ri blast from long range as something.

43rd minute- Korea Republic earns a free kick after Lugano makes a poor challenge on Ji-Sung.

41st minute- Du-Ri blasts a shot from the right flank and almost catches Muslera off his line, but the ball just sails over. Wow.

38th minute- Chu-Young whips in a cross after using his body to shield off a defender. He's getting more involved now.

34th minute- Chung-Yong has switched over to the left side now it appears. Will he fare better against Maxi Pereira?

31st minute- Chu-Young unleashes a shot from outside the 18, but it goes wide. Close there and much better for the South Koreans.

27th minute- Suarez gets called offside on a breakaway after Uruguay pickpocketed Yong-Hyung.

25th minute- Once again, Korea Republic is getting away from its short, quick passing. This is playing right into Uruguay's hands.

23rd minute- Forlan is dropping back to receive the ball and chip in defensively, while Suarez just lurks up top and awaits Uruguay's counterattacking offense.

20th minute- Uruguay plays very organized defensively. Four in the back with two holding midfielders in front. Against France, the South Americans used five defenders with two in front, but their defensive discipline worked to perfection and was quite impressive.

18th minute- Make it three times for Korea Republic now.

17th minute- Frustration already for Korea Republic? Twice now the defense has just booted the ball forward as opposed to the quick passing along the ground that it did so well in the group matches.

13th minute- Forlan is having a great tournament so far.

10th minute- Korea Republic keeps finding space in between Uruguay's midfield and back four, but every time it throws numbers forward, its defense is exposed to Uruguay's lethal counterattacks.

8th minute- Korea Republic's suspect defense is at fault for that goal. The defenders just watched the low cross roll by to the back post.

7th minute- GOAL URUGUAY! 1-0! Suarez is unmarked and scores off a Forlan feed!

5th minute- WOW! Chu-Yong hits his free kick off the post! So close for Korea Republic there.

4th minute- Perez concedes an early free kick to Korea Republic just outside the 18. Uruguay has to be careful with these.

PRE-GAME- Uruguay's defense has had a strong tournament so far, and if it can repeat its group stage showings than the South Americans should reach the quarterfinals.

PRE-GAME- The key for Korea Republic will be how to contain Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez. No small task. The South Koreans will also need its top performers, Ji-Sung and Chung-Yong, to have great games if they hope to advance.
