Mexican International and former Chicago Fire midfielder Cuauhtemoc Blanco is currently weighing an offer from Mexican league two side Irapauto over a return to MLS according to Mexican newspaper Record.

According to MLS sources, the Mexican veteran has rejected a return to the Fire for a return to the Liga Ascenso.  However, Blanco himself announced on Tuesday that he is still weighing offers.

"I have made no firm decisions yet and my agent is weighing all the options," said Blanco. "When I have made my final decision, I will make it public."

The 37-year-old midfielder played in three games for the Mexico in the World Cup and scored a goal in the team's 2-0 victory over France. Cuauhtemoc spent three seasons with the Fire and tallied 16 goals during that time.

  1. let me start by saying i am an american of mexican descent and i support the usa national team first (because my country of birth) and mexican national team second (because of my bloodlines). that said, i support mls as i am a fan of soccer and want to see our league continue to grow. simply said, blanco is past his due date. the interest of irapuato (a 2nd tier team in the mexican league) is about where he should be heading to play based on his soccer ability and his marketing potential. wrap that all up in a nutshell and what i am trying to say is, blanco has no place in mls and least of all chicago. time for the fire to go in a new direction.

  2. Chicago probably lost a couple thousand fans when he left and won’t get them back now that he’s flying the coop.

MLS is a business and Blanco brought business from the Mexicans and brought business from being the villain everyone loves to hate. And I’ll miss the later.

He did well, played well and could still do a number to help out Chicago. Thought he did well in the World Cup as well.

  3. Agree. I don’t think Blanco is worth a DP spot at this point in his career because he can’t go both ways for 90 minutes. I’d love DCU to get him on the cheap to be a late sub as his passing and vision are still fantastic, in my opinion, and would be useful for a midfield lacking creativity.

  4. I will pull a Debbie Downer. Despite what the report says on the Fulham website, EJ did not “dummy” the ball to set up a goal. In my opinion, he actually slipped/got bumped over by a defender and the ball happened to go by him, but it was not an intentional dummy. He did make a legit assist on the Chris Baird goal. His touch still appears way too heavy. He almost botched his goal by heavy footing it on his 1 v 1 move past the keeper, but his speed allowed him to catch up to it.

  6. MLS isnt falling all over him…..one of the worst teams in the league is falling over him including a delusional Mexican coach

MLS is above him, that is why Chicago wont make the playoffs this year unless they sign a quality Dp and even then they will struggle to do anything this year because of an incompetant manager

  7. I don’t think the majority of people are saying he couldn’t help a team as a sub, as I stated earlier, but the problem is that he’d likely demand DP money again. Honestly, I don’t think anyone could make a reasonable arguement that at his age and lack of ability to play a full 90 minutes every game, he’s worth that much money.

  8. Great to hear. However, I seem to remember Johnson doing well last year in preseason…but, with a change in leadership perhaps he will get his chance at Fulham.

  9. I don’t understand the hate. The guy can still play. Maybe he shouldn’t get paid a DP’s salary, but even at his old age, he has more creativity and passing ability than 95 percent of the players in MLS.

  10. Blanco puts butts in the seats, and sells ads which have been in short supply this season. It is a quick fix because they are listless from the top on down. I remember year one with 3 quality Poles and Kubik, Loads of fans were at Soldier field each match, now they cannot fill a smaller stadium. Klopas has to remember that. Come on Frankie, return our hope to us, look at the ring of Fire, the quality of players is nowhere near what it used to be. Elevate the level of play and the stands will be full, we know when you are not trying. I like McBride as much as the next guy but he is no spring chicken. I see a few 1st year forwars making an impact, we have Collins leadfoot John. Did you check on DLC’c track record of nurtuting young talent BEFORE you brought him in? Blanco is a move in the wrong direction…

  11. Obviously, the MLS isn’t above him, otherwise they wouldn’t be falling all over themselves to get him.

  12. Thanks for at least acknowledging that Blanco did bring something to the league. I would watch Fire games whenever possible because I love to watch that guy play soccer. It looks like the time has come for a parting of ways, but I think he was very good for the MLS, and brought a ton of interest to the Fire from the Mexican community in Chicago that will likely pay-off for years to come.

When I think of the USMNT’s ultimate adversary, I immediately see the face of Blanco. He was a great competitor with incredible vision and skill on the ball, and his 20 yard runs to the spot on penalties were just awesome. I’ve got to tip my cap to the guy.

  13. This is borderline ridiculous that Chicago is even thinking about trying to sign Blanco still. I’ll admit that even now he has the skill to be a good attacking sub late in a game but it would be a complete waste of money to bring him in as a DP. Now… if he wants to join the Fire for like the league minimum somehow then I’m all for it.

  14. I’m sorry, but stay in Mexico Blanco. Your time in MLS was appreciated, but I if you can’t contribute even just a half of football…

  15. Dear C. Blanco,

If you want a Mexican 2nd division spot over Chicago, Sr. Blanco, then, you are free to pursue it. We are above you now.

    Sincerely,
    MLS

  16. I thought he was good. too. His touch around the keeper was a bit long, but he had the speed to get it back. He finally beat an offside trap.

  17. update on eddie johnson: Looks like he played well. he set someone up for a nice shot, had a goal with a touch around the keeper, and dummied a ball to set up an open goal. Granted, brentford is a league one, but its nice to see he’s hooking up with mainstay guys, riise, gera, davies.

  18. i think i might have lost all respect for chicago front office seeing their desperation to sign a decent 37 year old who flops when a bug flies by him and cant run about as fast as Ol’ Blue from Oldschool. Already lost it over de los cobos, but boy, that is really something to rant about

  19. he’s staying in mecxico, he’s a king among men and he can run less there than here and play less defense. I sort of feel for chicago, but good riddance
