Happy Independence Day from SBI

USA flag

It is the Fourth of July, meaning it's the time of year to celebrate our independence.

With the World Cup on one of its loathed days off, there isn't too much soccer to keep an eye out for in between the trips to the grill and the setting off of fireworks. If you still need your soccer fix though, then today's pair of MLS matches might suffice.

Whether you'll be watching soccer today or not, we here at SBI hope you all have a good time, whether it is at the beach, park, relative's house or anywhere in between.

Have a happy and safe Independence Day.

  1. Hope everyone is enjoying the 4th. I’m sitting in my living room taking in the Red Bull-Colorado game. I can’t believe that Angel just scored his 9th of the season. He hasn’t been playing all that well, but the guy just keeps producing. Makes you wonder what he’d do if he was playing better…

  2. I heard the kid took his first dive this morning, got the opposing child a yellow, missed the free kick and started crying.

  3. Ah yes, the Stephen Colbert/leftist view of “patriotism” — over-the-top satirical jingoism to bash their own country, and ostensibly those who are proud to be American. STFU if that’s all you have to say, and move to France where you’ll feel more comfortable.

  4. I think his point is obvious — it’s not a celebration of the day, July 4th (of barbecues and booze), but of what it represents (our Independence and values).

  5. I love all the verses of the Star Spangled Banner… read on.

O! say can you see by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming.
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
    Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O! say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
‘Tis the star-spangled banner, O! long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

  7. Happy 4th…and here’s my WC predictions:

    Germany 2 – 1 Spain
    Holland 1 – 0 Uruguay

    Germany 1 – 1 Holland
    Germany wins (5-4) PK

I’m predicting some defensive, low-scoring matches. (And hoping for the opposite for entertainment purposes.)

  8. How about some original reporting and/or speculation on what the near future holds for LD, Clint, Jozy, Michael B., Demerit, Eddie J., and any others who are likely going to be entertaining offers or considering moves? That’s the story we all want to read.

  10. Happy 4th of July! My wife bought some fireworks off the back of a truck for $5. If you don’t hear from me, they were faulty.
