Thierry Henry's long-awaited arrival as a member of the New York Red Bulls finally came on Thursday night and he didn't disappoint.

The French star flashed his world class form for 45 minutes on Thursday in the Red Bulls 2-1 loss to Tottenham in the New York Challenge opener.

It is fair to say Henry is the best striker to ever sign with MLS, and the skill he displayed during his one-half cameo makes you wonder just how good he can be for New York, particularly when he is paired alongside Juan Pablo Angel.

Here are the highlights from Thursday night's match:

What did you think of Henry's debut? See him taking MLS by storm? How many goals can you see him scoring this season?

  1. 13K? You’re not even close. There were definitely more than 20K. I’ve been to almost every match this season and the stadium was pretty full, save for the upper corners. Lots of Spurs support from the city, though nothing compared to how many were there for Sporting last night.

  2. Caligiuri knows his football but Rogodino is garbage…Also, how could a match like this have no pre-game and not ne in HD?

  3. World Class is an over used term by many that is tossed out at anything that remotely resembles any form of skill. So the World Cup just ended and the Spanish won it with World Class skill and you are comparing the Red Bulls exhibition match to something like that. I agree they played good and I think they will be a great MLS team after the All Star break but get over they looked World Class usage every time two passes are made in a row.

  4. Compared to Beckham’s introduction, this was completely junior varsity. MLS needs to fire its marketing people, or stop limiting their staff hires to spanish-speaking people. Clearly, the league has a talent problem in the corporate office.

    (1) The match was on FSC, which means it was watched by less than 30,000 people. They need to bail on FSC as a broadcast partner ASAP. Even with the over-hyped Premier League, FSC only averages 7,000 viewers in Total Day.

    (2) The stadium had huge sections of open seats. Couldn’t have been more than 13k tickets actually used (20,300 announced attendance). Outside the opening game, I don’t recall Red Bull coming anywhere close to a sellout this year. Maybe when LA comes to town?

  5. The past 30 years puts us at 1980 on.

There weren’t many better than Henry but just of the top of my head, Shearer, Owen, Ronaldo,RVN,Shevchenko,Villa, Drogba, Batistuta, Bebeto, Klose (only when he plays for Germany),Klinsmann, Larsson, Van Basten, Rush, Aldridge and a few others come to mind.

  6. ” I mean people consistently latch onto them because they have the best players and always have. I find that annoying. That is all. ”

“I was simply saying I find flocking to a World Soccer power very very annoying when you have no relationship to the club whatsoever”

A lot of these US fans picked up Man U when there was no MLS or other soccer teams to root for. It’s very judgmental and condescending of you to rule their relationship with Man U as having no legitimacy. Who died and elected you Chief of the Relationship Police? So only Manclunians can root for United?

I guess your version of a true fan, one who would meet your approval, would be one who finds a crappy team with crappy players and no hope of ever getting any better and rooting for them anyway?? This is something to be proud of? “Our teams suck but we love them anyway because we have no choice.”

Do you have some kind of leather suit with whips and chains in your closet?

What is truly annoying are people like you telling others what to like.

  7. I love it when when they come stateside they charge A team prices and put out a crap B side team and American bandwagon Man U fans eat it all up.

    SUCKERS!!!!

Fire couldnt trick me into paying to see the B team practice (oooh look at the reserves kick the ball around at 1mph in a cricle!!!).

Is Rooney playing? Is Vidic playing? No, because they were in the WoRld Cup?

wasnt Landon and Buddle there too? Arent they playing.

  10. Dear SP,

Any team you want. In fact, I’ll give you permission to even support multiple teams. It’s a big world out there. Be generous with your support. As always, thanks for the note.

    Yours truly,
    G.O.S.

  11. You definitely can’t lump US-based Euro soccer fans in with the same group as Cowboys fans in, say, Ohio and say they are both “hangers-on.”

The difference is that, unless you’re 100 years old, there has always been an NFL and teams in or near your city to pull for. The same can’t be said for soccer.

MLS didn’t form until I was 17, so people my age who enjoyed watching soccer had to pull for teams in established professional leagues outside the US. If you pull for a team from an early age I don’t think one should be expected to drop their allegiance to that team for a 1st year club, even if that 1st year club is in their home town.

I’m sure there are a number of people who showed up to the ManU/Union game, with ManU kits, who couldn’t tell Wayne Rooney from Wayne Brady. I’m not talking about those people. Those people should be shot.

  12. They get excited because a plane ticket to the UK is expensive and not everyone has the time and money to go to a game that actually means something. They are excited to see their team play even though it’s only a meaningless preseason game, and that makes them less of a fan? That completely flys in the the face of logic.
